Well, this map was an adventure to make. I gave up on it several times, but ultimately I'm glad with the way it turned out.

So, one could say this city has taken a very different path in History. Today, it is a but a village called Karaundi, in the State of Madhya Pradesh, that has very little of interest by itself, except for the fact that, in a plot of land near it, is the geographic center of India. There's a small monument, but nothing fancy, really. From what I could tell, the people there live very simple lives, build clay furnances and cultivate the countryside.

I decided to then take their area for a test and use it to design an eco-friendly Gandhian socialist city to serve as capital for an India under Gandhian socialism. Since one day I may want to work on this scenario, I won't give many details, but the general idea is the Bihar Movement of Gandhian socialists triumphing over Indira Gandhi during the Emergency, and leading to the Total Revolution movement triumphing in India and reforming the country under their principles. In my writing idea, the support of retired Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is what leads them to victory, making him the first President under the new Constitution and giving him the statue in the city. Also representing a union between the pacifist Gandhians and the Indian Army (or better yet, National Force of Guardians) that would be quite necessary for the country, considering Pakistan was already a thing and wouldn't become more amicable by India turning a weird form of socialist.

The ideals of the new government and the nomenclature used are inspired in that of the Gandhian Constitution, written by Shriman Narayan in 1946; to put it short, the majority of power and functions would be in the local village Pachayat, elected by a council of all its citizens, around 1000 adults, which elects one of its members as President. They were to enjoy maximum local authority, being entrusted with matter such as education, recreation, protection, agriculture, industry, commerce, sanitation and healthcare, justice and taxation.

A few dozen villages would bind together as a Taluka, with a pachayat made from the presidents of each village, with one of them being elected as Taluka President; the taluka would audit the villages' dealings, provide high school eductation, maintain hospitals for more specific treatment, run cooperative banks, keep roads, maintain model farms and organise inter-village sports tournaments.

A dozen Talukas would bind together as a district, with a Pachayat made of the presidents of each Taluka, electing one of their own to be District President. They'd audit taluka accounts, provide college education, maintain hospitals for very specific diseases, maintain a reserve of Guardians for emergencies, run larger cooperative banking societies, make arrengements for irrigation and organise sporting events. In urban scenarios, the district would be a Municipality. Due to its status, Gandhinagar and its wider area form a district.

The District President is a member of the Provincial Pachayat, which elects one of its own as Provincial President. They are responsible with auditing districts, maintaining a reserve of Guardians for emergencies, arrange for university education and research centers, organise transport and communications, provide irrigational facilities, organise famine relief, run a cooperative bank for credit loans, develop the natural resources of the Province and manage its key industries. The Pachayat should also appoint a Provincial executive branch of Ministers to oversee these efforts.

Finally, the Central Government, headquartered in Gandhinagar, has its legislative branch in the All-India Pachayat, to which the President of each Province is a member and which elects one of its leaders as the President of India to serve as Head of State. They also appoint a Cabinet of Ministers. They'll have the mission of defending the country against foreign threats, develop the National Force of Guardians, coordinate provincial plans of economic development, run the key industries of importance to All India, manage the departments of transport and communications, regulate currency, customs and international trade, maintain educational institutions of All India importance to manage key research points and to shape foreign policy of the Nation.

Gandhinagar was built specifically to host the Central Government, but not only that, but to serve as a model for the reconstruction of large cities into the Gandhian way. Always advocates of ruralisation, the Gandhian socialists struggled most with adapting their ideas to an urban and industrial lifestyle and, although great opponents of the Nehrunian industrialisation of India, they nevertheless understood it was necessary for the country to maintain certain industries that produced domestic products. Gandhinagar was born out of the ideal of binding together the simple rural life of the Gandhians with the modern necessities of the world; a city made Gandhian, to show the entire nation the world they had been promised could occur. If Gandhinagar could function, then why couldn't Mumbai or Delhi be like that?

If it worked or not, and how truthful is the image of "The City of Gandhi" as the paradise he envisioned... Well, that I'll let each reader decide, to be honest, because I myself can't figure out what would be the natural evolution of things here. All I know I was challenged to change the destiny of a city, and I took a small village in central India and made it into a thriving, if odd city built around a concept that, really, is that of an "upside down town".

I hope you enjoyed the map, and the details (I stole a lot from the Gandhian Constitution, it is a real thing, I'd suggest anyone interested reads it, as it has a very interesting manifesto of the views of the Gandhian socialists. Designing cities remains a challenge to me, but it was really fun working on this, since I basically had a blank canvas to work on, in a neat little valley that gave me limits by nature where to work the city and give it a rather natural contour. It turned really well, in my opinion. At least I wasn't expecting myself to like the design as much as I do.

Last-minute entrance! I had a hard time coming up with a good idea, and I didn't have an idea until the day before. My card would probably be less empty if I had started it earlier, but I'll give it to you anyway.
The scenario takes place about 1500 years after our time and the sea level has risen 100 metres all over the planet. We will follow the history of the city of Poitiers at that time.

At the beginning of the second millennium a flourishing civilization was born in the West and spread to the entire planet. This global civilization was constantly progressing in many sciences and possessed powerful technologies that allowed it to reshape the world as it wished. However, being very energy-intensive and with resources beginning to run out all over the globe, the global civilization collapsed on an unprecedented scale and has not recovered since. Moreover, by reshaping the global landscape it caused global warming all over the planet and very quickly the sea levels rose to unprecedented levels. This flood washed away most of the great cities of the ancient world and many arable lands. Most continents saw the appearance of great arid deserts on their rich land. The ancient biodiversity could only survive in part with a lot of genetic manipulation.
The Franke Peninsula is one of these ancient powers, its borders being to the north on the river "Rin", to the south by the Pyrenees, to the east by the Alps and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, which has devoured the coasts.
This region of Europe has one of the most prosperous city-states: Poitiers.
Poitiers was one of the great cities of Franc without being the most powerful. But the Flood that engulfed the capital in the north as well as the other large cities of the country destroyed the established order. Poitiers also had its problems with rising waters and the arrival of many refugees. This period saw the near destruction of the city, which in turn was to fall into the limbo of oblivion.
But the city was about to recover. After the collapse Poitiers had a very large population compared to the rest of the world and was able to rebuild its infrastructure. Over the centuries the city developed a republican regime inspired by the ancient Republic of Franke and then developed its power by launching numerous raids in the devastated regions and sending many explorers to find the remains of the ancient civilization in the ocean. After the collapse Poitiers had a very large population compared to the rest of the world and was able to rebuild its infrastructure. Over the centuries the city developed a republican regime inspired by the ancient Republic of Franc and then developed its power by launching numerous raids in the devastated regions and sending many explorers to find the remains of the ancient civilization in the ocean. This ocean that had ravaged the world would also be the source of power for Poitiers, which now has a coastline allowing it to build up a prolific merchant fleet. The ships of Poitiers are the European ships that travel the most in the world that can reach the borders of Northern Europe and its arable land to the coasts of North Africa and its many jungles. Soon the growing city began to leave its small peninsula and spread out to the surrounding shores.
The most important monuments are mostly in the city centre.
The Presidential Palace is also known as the "Round Palace" because of its shape. It is in the sumptuous palace built after the Great Flood that the President and his close family and court live. It is a necessary passage to enter the great spheres of power of the city.
The Hôtel de ville is located north of the Round Palace. It corresponds to a Council of the great merchants of the city dominated by the largest families of the city. The purpose of this council is to guide the policy of the city and to defend the interests of the greatest number. The President is invited to sit on the Council every three days.
To the west of the Town Hall is the Cour des Fêtes, where the wealthy and young people from the uptown meet to party every night of the year. It is a place of debauchery where alcohol and money flows freely. Prostitution, debauchery and gambling are commonplace. It is a place more or less forbidden for people of low status and many Catholic and Muslim clerics of the city denounce this place of all vices.
To the south of the Round Palace is the Faculty where all the technologies of the old world are rediscovered and rebuilt. It is the faculty that rebuilt the city's electrical network and which supplies motorization and alloy to the Arsenal in the south of the city. The production of firearms and explosives also comes from the Faculty. The Faculty also owns the "Parc de Blossac", a large botanical garden where many plant and animal species abound.
Poitiers is the city of merchants and most of them are renowned throughout Europe for their wealth, refinement and festive taste. They are the key players in the economy of Poitiers. This class of merchants divides the different economic sectors of the city into large families with colossal fortunes:

-The "Martin" own the navy sector and, thanks to their Arsenal and shipyard, produce hundreds of ships per month. They are the oldest merchant family in the city and it was their sailors who mapped the new sea routes. It is also their sailors who fought the many pirates in old Normandy and on the island of Brittany.

-The "Mercier" control the supply of food and raw materials to the city. They also own the countryside surrounding the city and the many aerial wells that supply the city with fresh water and crops. Their numerous irrigation canals as well as control of the botanical garden have enabled them to reftilise the region's land with many new plant species.

-The "Boyer" control the production of most of the city's manufactured goods, from jewellery, perfumes and clothing to old world technologies such as light bulbs and high-powered motors. They own most of the Faculty and its technologies. Most of the explorers and plunderers of the area bringing back the remains of the old world are at their sales.

-The "Durand" lead the city's armed forces and mercenaries, selling their services to neighboring powers or defending the city from attacks. They also possess a powerful air fleet with their emblematic four-winged aircraft which criss-cross Europe for trade or war. The mercenaries of Poitiers are renowned throughout Europe for their martiality and numbers, the only condition being that they cannot fight Poitiers itself or other mercenaries in the city.

Most families are in fierce competition and do not hesitate to use great means if one of them enters the reserved domain of another. But marriages between most families are not uncommon, their purpose being to prevent a new family from appearing. Their inbreeding is also quite crazy and it is not uncommon for some members to be lunatics or even profound idiots. They meet at the Town Hall and form the "Grand Council", they are in charge of advising the President on the town's policy and electing the latter's heir son upon his death. If there is a power struggle or conflict, it must be settled within the Council and must not endanger the integrity of the city.
For centuries, the status quo has been respected between the great families despite numerous assassinations and poisonings between the different greats. The "presidential family", which has long since ceased to be elected, also prevents a power struggle for the throne. But it is not uncommon for the different families to try to "recover" the heir to ensure his education and the defence of their economic sector. The numerous wars against other city states such as Limoges or Bourges ensured Poitiers the almost monopoly of the region's economy.
But this fragile balance is in danger of being upset: the economy of Northern Europe has collapsed after a devastating war that has had repercussions on trade in Poitiers. Many of the inhabitants can no longer bear the ostentatious opulence of the high aristocracy and many revolts have been crushed in blood. Finally, a Catholic theocratic empire was born south of the Franke, the "Kingdom of Quercy" and threatens the integrity of the heretic city "which bows down before the gold of trade". The Christian inhabitants are now seen as an internal enemy ready to pounce at the slightest moment of weakness.
The brutal death of the President and most of his heirs will plunge the town into chaos...
