Italian defeat in a CP-Victory

Suppose the US remains neutral in WW1.
In Italy, let's say Caporetto goes much worse for the Italians followed by a defeat at Monte Grappa. In the face of such disasters, the Italians sue for peace. In the armistice, the Austrians occupy up all of Lombardy and Venetia.
  • What would the terms be in a peace treaty after the war?
  • What would be the effects of defeat be in Italian politics?
  • Would Fascism still come to power with Mussolini at its helm?
  • Would the monarchy survive?

Fascism is obviously rising since italy felt they had lost the war and Mussolini rose. Now they actually have.

I imagine Austria would take veneto back but other than that idk- maybe they claim lombardy, maybe they demilitarize it. Germany might want that Libyan oil but they might not be able to get at the colony given that they'd need to go around the british and french fleets, and then through the italian and french Mediterranean fleets- a tall order for anyone.

They didn’t know about the oil yet.

There were no demands for Italian concessions by any of the factions running the show in A-H, probably just some minor border corrections like with Romania.

An interesting idea would be resurrecting the Venetian republic, the people there have more than enough identity of their own to make an independent nation without needing to enforce it being independent.

Libyan oil was unknown in WW1, Libya at that time is just a useless piece of land that no one else really wants.

The peace for Italy in case of CP victory, late or ealry, will be rather lenient. Italys problem is traditionally Italy itself.

What would the terms be in a peace treaty after the war?

Occupy Veneto for 5-10 years maybe the Piave River as a new border, reparations, a DMZ, maybe a few ships/subs, and perhaps little else. AH wants out and Italy would too, such a move would permit them to move troops home and/or East and/or to the Western Front for a final push.

What would be the effects of defeat be in Italian politics?

Widespread discontent, strikes, and likely fascism in a year or two earlier.

Would Fascism still come to power with Mussolini at its helm?

Probably, though Communism isn't totally ruled out either.

Would the monarchy survive?

Good question. Probably though perhaps at a reduced level of influence, though with Cardona as a national scapegoat they might retain substantial influence.
