Jumping on the tiny map bandwagon-
This Timeline branched off from OTL during the 1930s, but the main divergence comes with the survival of Subhas Chandra Bose in the fateful aircraft accident. He returns to India with impressive resources and money, thanks to his contacts with the Soviet Union and Imperial Japan. He is promptly arrested over treason, but radicals within the Congress hail him as a hero. He is able to secure amnesty thanks to his popularity among the Congress leadership. He regains his top position in the freedom struggle and steers it in an overtly socialistic, pro-Soviet direction.
This spooks the British government wary of the Soviets at the beginning of the cold war. However, as the moderates within the Congress are marginalised and ignored, while the population grows uneasy for independence, the government appears powerless.
Meanwhile, Subhas Bose's pro-Hindi leanings increasingly alienate Southern India and the Dravidian movement gains force. Sensing opportunity, Lord Mountbatten covertly supports the movement and releases plans for a Dravida Nadu. The moderates within the Congress led by Sardar Patel enable its formation out of spite and place one of their own, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari as Prime Minister.
With this, several Princes follow suit. First, Hyderabad declares itself independent from the dominion of India, followed by Jammu and Kashmir and Baroda.
As India finally becomes independent, it tries to bully the minor states to rejoin. However, they are defended by Britain and the invasion of Baroda backfires, allowing it to takeover all of Gujarat with support from fellow princes scared of losing their estates thanks to socialism.
India is still led by Jawaharlal Nehru, with Bose acting as the president. Pakistan tries to take-over JK here too and the Maharaja is forced to ask for help from India. India is a bit more strategic this time does not annex Kashmir. Instead, Nehru's ally Sheikh Abdullah is placed as the Prime Minister of Kashmir and the Maharaja loses all power.
India continues as OTL, being a socialist republic, with the Nehru-Gandhi family at the helm.
On the other hand, Dravida Nadu and Gujarat adopt free marketeerism and industrialise rapidly along with other Asian tigers. Pakistan grows quickly too, but eventually stagnates. The Bengali genocide is even worse in this timeline, and Bangladesh emerges as an independent state.
South Asia becomes an important cold war arena.
India takes over Goa, Sikkim and even Mysore for a brief period under Sanjay Gandhi. Described as a powerhungry tyrant and as incompetent and scheming, he orders severe repression and wastes resources in his pet projects. He managed to unite the disparate powers in the subcontinent against him when he tried to invade Gujarat. Eventually, he is deposed by his own sister-in-law, Sonia Gandhi. India undergoes an earlier liberalization under Subramanian Swamy in 1984.
The SAARE (South Asian Association for the Regional Economy), which also means "we all" in Hindi, is established in 1993, after the fall of the Soviet Union. It is a loose economic cooperation project, similar to the EEC.

Islamic Republic of Pakistan | Islamabad | 213228286 | 1369470 | Low | Ruled by a military junta with a powerless prime minister, Pakistan is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir | Srinagar | 17686900 | 51358 | Low | Jammu and Kashmir is officially a constitutional monarchy, with Omar Abdullah. Like Pakistan, J&K is very corrupt, with the Abdullah family acting as virtual dictators, with only a meek opposition and a meeker king to stop them. Kashmir has been invaded multiple times by Pakistan and currently faces an islamic insurgency. |
People's Republic of India | New Delhi | 1026784600 | 13438206 | Lower-Middle | People's Republic of India is currently led by Shivraj Singh Chauhan and remains the "Hegemon of the Subcontinent". After Sanjay Gandhi's demise, India liberalised its economy and now has a large and quickly-growing middle class, hungry for resources and opportunities. Yet, it still has the second largest population of poor people in the world and it also faces a corrupt system. |
People's Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal | Kathmandu | 28756100 | 58395 | Low | Nepal is a Maoist state that formed after its king was overthrown. It is ruled by Upper-Class Muslims who disregard the wishes of the rest of the population (over 90%). Thankfully, the Nizam's intervention means that outright genocide and repression has not been tried, and the state's funds are used for the benefit of the people and not embezzled by the ruling class. The Prime Minister is Assaudin Owaisi, a radical muslim theocrat. Still, Hyderabad has emerged as an attractive immigration destination. |
Republic of Dravida Nadu | Chennai | 146075600 | 7065497 | Upper | Dravida Nadu was a result of the Dravidian movement's backlash against Hindi and Brahmin's. Currently led by Narayan Murthy, a tech entrepreneur and philanthropist. |
Kingdom of Mysore | Mysuru | 42669300 | 1991224 | Upper-Middle | |
