DBWI a far left Cuba?

Ooc: Batista coup was foiled. Minimal side effects on the rest of the world.

I was watching Potential History video about the Cuban low level guerrilla warfare in the late fifties and early sixties against the president Ramon Grau and later under the social democrat one that succeeded him and was wondering, even if Cuba today is by many a paradise the island got some massive problems of wealth concentration and only hit 99% literacy in the late 80s. Let's say that one of the guerrillas take over, how the island could be today? Could Cuba be divided like Germany was or Korean is? I don't see the USA having a pro Soviet state so close so we could have a north-south Cuba divide.

No way the US would tolerate a far-left Cuba, so close to Florida. This openly pro-Soviet nation (if somehow formed in the cold war) would get taken by a CIA coup, and if it fails, find some reason for a full military invasion, then an occupation. Tolerate a far-left Cuba in the cold war & you got Nuclear weapons aimed at Florida. Period.

Assuming the insurgency gets out of control, can we have some kind of Spanish civil war in Cuba with the USA supplying the government and the Soviets supplying the rebels?

Perhaps. But the most important thing to understand is that even this far-left government wins a civil war, the US will make sure it will not last for long. A Cuban-Soviet alliance is a red NO on anyone sane (American)

Tbh the USA would bloc the island, the Soviets wouldn't be able to supply the rebels.

Assuming that for a ASB reason the far left takes over, could Cuba become a industrial totalitarian state? Maybe with nukes like north Korea?

Too little time for the Cubans to make that happen. America would go all in to prevent it if even a far less extreme scenario would start. The location is king.

How does that work? The USSR (or Warsaw Pact) is what, 4,700 miles away and the USA 240. Hard to see a scenario where the Soviets can supply someone who will need a lot of equipment almost continuously to keep the USMC and USAAF from paying a visit.

It’d be another Banana War.

To quote an old post of mine:

No way Cuba could go Communist. Military intervention wouldn't even be necessary to defeat a Communist regime. The US had an unbeatable weapon in the sugar quota. If the US cuts the quota, who is Cuba going to sell sugar to--the Soviet Union?! (The idea is so absurd that even the Cuban Communists never suggested it. For one thing, the USSR, if not self-sufficient in sugar, was itself a very large sugar producer; but of course even if it were economically feasible, a Cuban-Soviet league of any kind was politically unthinkable.)

If Cuba turned Communist, we would missed the Castro brothers dearly. They are THE BASEBALL LEGENDS who define Baseball in 20th Century and beyond to become such important international sports.

Man, after Fidel Castro's retirement as Miami Marlin's Manager and chief coach in 2015, their playstyle suffered.

North Korea is very rich in coal and metals, and is right next to China, so it could be supplied in other resources, but Cuba ? Maybe they have a few things like copper or nickel, but if you have neither iron or coal, you can't really industrialize (tools, railways, ... how can they be built if you can't produce steel).

However, there's an other way ... depending on your definition of "far left", they could also be Sweden. Huge taxes, huge interventionism, douchebag companies having their assets seized, but still private property. As Tito's exemple showed, communism can take many different faces, maybe Cuba could be the first Socialist state with a human face. If the guerilla throuws the government by the window and burns American flags, sure, it's going to get bloody and dirty really quick, with a Civil War et all; but maybe the government could reach a compromise. It depends on how "ideologically pure" this Cuban far left wishes to be.

Besides, who's going to lead this Red Cuba, Fidel Castro? After all, he never returned to Cuba except for short visits after he got drafted by the New York Yankees.

Raoul refused to stay in the States for long, and ended up batting for Cuban National Team while Fidel naturalized as American Citizen could be the clue.

It would be Raoul Castro, not Fidel, Fidel is pretty much pro-American.

Let's see how the legendary feud of Castro Brothers played out in political instead of baseball scene.

There is this point, they just removed their left wing president Cardenas on that strange accusations of election rigging and the new one is part of the casino cartel.

And considering John F Kennedy resigned over Mafia-Link Impeachment Scandal, it wasn't uniquely Cuban problem.

Well, you have to remember that the Sin Trio - Havana, Atlantic City and Vegas - have all been involved with the mafia on some level. Havana is the only one that hasn’t been overrun by developers and corporate interests, so it still has some of that older charm and it’s still a lot more affordable.

Plus Fidel Castro loved managing the Marlins because their AAA team was - and still is - in Havana and usually contends for the IL pennant.

Well in regards to PODs, it would have to be before 1966, when Disneyworld began construction in Santiago de Cuba. Consider how President Desi Arnaz turned a blind eye to the numerous labor law violations and sweatshop conditions placed the country under, in an effort to please the Disney Corporation. If the labor conditions and corruption of the casinos wasn't tolerated, imagine how the Communists would have reacted to Walt Disney and his strike-breaking tactics...
