Had my own go at the concept of having similarly sized states, only this time I tried to go for a more "realistic" style by better integrating it with natural features of the region. I considered adding Alaska to the mix, but once I finished with the contiguous USA I took one look at Alaska's size and said "no".

As a Dallas native, I'm just glad I'm no longer in the same state as Houston

I decided to use this as a project to mess around with QGIS and I obtained population figures* for some of these states**.

*By Census Tract. Tracts in multiple states are sometimes miscounted, which disproportionately affects low-population states.
**Data set does not include population information for areas outside the US, so states partly or entirely in Mexico will not have accurate data.

Washington: 5.16 million
Oregon: 3.69 million
Jefferson: 882,000
California: 11.68 million
Salina: 1.38 million
Lincoln: 1.39 million
Wallowa: 863,000
Payutah: 45,000*
Nevada: 742,000
Phoenicia: 11.65 million
Franklin: 11.81 million**
Montana: 405,000
Idaho: 244,000
Shoshone: 810,000
Goshutah: 236,000
Mohave: 2.41 million
Colorado: 2.59 million**
Upper Missouri: 187,000
Talon: 500,000
Wasatch: 2.03 million
Yutah: 338,000
Navajo: 565,000
Arizona: 3.36 million**

This method is actually fairly time-consuming, so that's as far as I got.

Those words emit so much fucking power holy shit

Also, how'd Lenin get in power in Prussia/Germany of all places?
The short of it is that the Lenin train derails near Königsberg. He manages to breach the Lenin-containment-wagon and advances to the city and starts a revolution there.

Something I am thinking of. The black state I am not sure what to name or even what they are. I am thinking maybe a hive mind and/or a horde. Maybe perhaps some sort of fascist or eldritch thing. The empire I am thinking a very classical empire. A Rome, China, Kaiserreich or British Empire kind of thing. Coalition I generally consider to be an alliance against the empire.Confederation of Heavenly Peace is planned to be an expy of the HALO Covenant while the Alliance of Heavenly Peace (just noticed the typo) has a different interpretation of their religion who have seceded from the Confederation. Many of the lesser states around the Confederation left it around the time of first contact with the Terrans. Republic of the Core is basically supposed to be an expy of the Star Wars Republic while League of Free Planets is an expy of the Star Trek Federation. Orion Accords are a multi-species NATO with the Terrans as the US (Terran Federation is human dominated but there are other species). Outside of the Terrans and some small members of the Accords the only other Human nation is the biggish Accord member near the core. Terrans in general have a technological superiority to most other states in the Galaxy (with the possible exception of the black state). The reasons for Terran superiority is a weird (and totally ASB) thing that I will edit into this post some time later.

Before the rise of the Terran Federation the Orion Arm was mostly empty with some small alien states. CHP (lol, didn't expect that acronym, this is funny to me as a Turk) included AHP and the most of the smaller states around the CHP but the AHP rebellion had already started in something of a parallel to the Protestant Reformation (and yes, the 30 years war). They had heard of LFP and the Republic of the Core but didn't have much interaction. They were not aware of the three other major states at all. The Core and the League were (and are) very much aware of each other and have friendly relations with the Core having had only limited awareness of the black nation. The League considered (still considers) the black state to be their greatest threat. They had little awareness of the CHP. The Core considered (still considers) the Empire to be their greatest threat while the League mostly ignored the Empire while being mostly antagonistic to them. Both don't have much more than rumors of the Coalition. The Empire wished (still does wish) to expand while the Coalition was trying to lead a resistance. Imperials were aware of the Republic and the League.

So what led to the meteoric rise of the Terrans, the Foundation of the Accords and how did a species that entered the interstellar arena only recently became the most technologically advanced nation in the galaxy?
Alien Space Bats, that's how.

When the time became midnight and the year of 2020 started 5 spaceships from fiction appeared in Earth orbit. The largest was the 5 kilometers long Lunar-class heavy cruiser of Warhammer 40K, second largest being the 5 meters long Infinity supercarrier of Halo, third was the 1700 meters long Imperial Star Destroyer of Star Wars, the second smallest was the 1400 meters long Battlestar Galactica from the series of the same name and finally the smallest was the 600 meters long Galaxy-class starship of Star Trek. The next day 5 shuttles landed in front of the UN headquarters and explained that the crews of the ships were not real people and that they would disappear after training people to operate the ships as 5 nations would each claim one ship. Despite being the smallest ship the Galaxy was the most sought after by the 5 permanent members of the Security Council as the replicator and the transporter were the most useful of all the technologies in offer. As such in the end the United States claimed the Galaxy class starship to claim these technologies. Chinese claimed the Infinity due to it being one of the more simple ships (making maintenance and building of more ships easier) and due to it having 4 Strident class heavy frigates (with the ability to carry a total of 10) making it the only one of the 5 ships that has escorts instead of being alone. Due to its strength and the ease of maintenance (can be kept operational for thousands of years) the Russians claimed the Lunar. The British claimed the Star Destroyer to continue their naval pride and the French were left with the Battlestar, which they would use well.

This was followed by a few decades of quick technological growth on Earth and exploration of local star systems. This culminated in a war between the three NATO space powers against Russians and the Chinese. This World War 3 (which wasn't limited to the the world this time but that's not important) ended with a Western victory and a decade after that Humanity was united under United Nations. UN created new ships that were combinations of the best parts of the 5 ships (transporter, MACs, a combination of different shields, Hyperdrive for pure speed and other FTL methods that didn't require complex calculations for emergencies, etc) and began exploring the Orion Arm. United Nations later evolved into the Terran Federation and creatd the Orion Accords with alien species they met that had interstellar states.
(There is some more story in my mind but I haven't put it into any semblance of order yet)

Anyway the map is supposed to be set in some centuries after ASB granted humans fictional spaceships. And I realise that I haven't really explained the Human technological upper hand yet. To put it simply one of the most important distinctions is that the other species don't have teleportation and replicators. They also have much slower FTL drives and weaker shields. Weapons wise Terrans are slightly stronger but that, STL drives and sensors are mostly equal. Also humans don't have cloaking technologies, which some of the alien species have.

Payutah must be by far the smallest state by population- which is pretty much what I expected :)

Out of the mist, over the next cliff, a light is revealed
A keeper tends to the flames. Over the waves, he sings
'One more port to call, one more romantic voyage to take
The old river long behind me, the great blue infinite
Oh, Columbia, you draw me with the allure of the sea
The promise of wealth
never gone'"
-Naldo Bonzi, from A Journey to the North
"The post-catastrophe history of Columbia is largely conjecture. It is widely accepted among academicians that following the destruction of Old Seattle and Old Portland that farming communities emerged at the opening of the Columbia and
engaged in tribal warfare for a number of decades. However, these years are terribly documented, and records worthy of attention only appear in 92 AC, when Duke Rennik I signed the Treaty of Cathlam, binding a number of small farming communities along the northern banks of Columbia into the Cathlam Federation. While nominally each community had a voice in the federation, the Duke of Cathlam had the power to control essentially the entire Federation.
The Cathlam Federation under Rennik I, 92 AC-100 AC
The first eight years of the Columbian Federation were under the name the Cathlam Federation, likely originating from an Old World name. Rennik, ruling over a new, small realm, was not focused on expanding, though a small township was added to the federation a few miles east on the river. Technological revolutions in farming technology and the creation of a small merchant fleet allowed for trade with tribes farther down the river and the budding Californian city states, along with contact with Vancouver island chiefdoms. Rennik's rule was one of pragmatism. Conquest was a secondary priority; the wealth of his citizens was first and foremost. His death was met with a small funeral in Cathlam, and the federation dedicated a new statehouse in his honor. The first Duke of the Federation went quietly.
The Columbian Federation under Rennik II, 100 AC-115 AC
Rennik I was infertile, and so his designated successor was the diabolical and greedy Rennik II. A sycophant to his uncle, when gained the throne he dedicated his rule to land wars of conquest on the maw of the Great Coluimbia and expansions on the Interor Cathlam Frontier. Along with these conquests, his creation of colonies on the South Bank consolidated Columbian power. However, his crimes far outweighed his conquests; Rennik II was overcome with glutton. Much of the state funds were redirected to grand parades and parties, wine free-flowing for his favorite mistresses. When he embarked the first fleet to establish Fort Megler on Megler Cape, he arrested each member of the powerless Columbian council and declared the foundation of the Columbian Federation. He was to be the Duke of Columbia; his peasents subservient of Rennik II. The rest of his reign was spent in revelry and lawlessness. No further colonies were established. Trade with Vancouverian chieftans ground to a halt, and all products of trade with Californians was seized and "inspected" by the guards of Rennik II. The future of the sorry Duchy was thrown into peril when a former aide of Rennik I stabbed Rennik II in the back with a blade of bone. The councilmembers of Columbia were released from their imprisonment. Rennik II, the final Duke of Columbia, died in Cathlam at the age of 43. The councilmen of Columbia stormed Cathlam castle and declared the foundation of the Second Columbian Federation, hitherto known as The True Columbian Federation or simply as the Columbian Federation. At its head was the Columbian Senate, a group of noblemen, chiefs, and peasent commune leaders elected from across the Columbia valley.
The Columbian Federation, under the Rennikian Senate, 115 AC-138 AC
The foundation of the True Columbian Federation is, among chroniclers, agreed to have been the beginning of the Columbian Golden Age. Cathlam, while still a small town, had become a center of learning along the entire Lower Columbian Valley. Trade resumed with the Vancouverian chieftans, though the great Victorian war of 121 AC reduced many of the chieftans to simpler tribal states. Trade with the Californian city states resulted in the import of both the Jewish faith from the Salinasian valley and the import of fresh fruits and nuts from the Northern Great Valley. However, by far the greatest impact was the reintroduction of simpler printing methods from over the Sierra; the Nevadan print method was used to great effort in bringing new communies along the Columbia into the federation's fold. It was during this period that pasture expansions on the Maw and the establishment of trading outposts on the West Coast transitioned the function of the Columbian state from a primarily agricultural and pastoral venture to one focused on the export of Columbian cattle and the profileration of trading along the Columbia. The primary achievement of the Rennikian Senate was the complete and total control of the Maw, the wide bay of the Columbia that emptied into the Ocean. This control allowed the Federation to tax trading into the Columbia and facilitated the establishment of outposts along the entire coast. The rise of Senator Ericsson in the later years of the Senate shifted power bases from the traditional capital of Cathlam to settlements farther east. Ericsson and his factions higher in the Columbia river valley secured the Old Portland outpost and the beginning of expeditions into Old World settlements on the south bank of the Columbia river. It is for Ericsson's rise that we can split the Rennikian Senate into two periods:
  1. The Dominance of Old Noblemen with Dego Figa at it's head and
  2. The Ascendancy and eventual challenge of Ericsson and the eastern faction.
The Columbian Federation, under the Ericsson Senate, 138 AC-159 AC
Senator Ericsson, one of the defining figures of the Middle Golden Age of Columbia, challenged Dego Figa, head of the western Old Nobleman. At this point, the eastern city of View had become as large as Cathlam and the financial center of the entire Eastern area of the Federation. His storming of the Cathlam castle and the declaration of the new capital in View radically changed Columbian priorities. As the de facto head of the Columbian state, his focus on settling Old Portland and adopting tribal farming practices in the area led to the creation of the Portland Protectorate; a vast swath of land stretching across all of Old Portland. Small outposts and communities were settled on both the north and south banks of the Columbia. Interior expansions in the west were nearly as large. In the North Bay, large fisheries were established. By the end of Ericsson's life, the Lower Columbian banks had largely been settled. In areas without settlements, heavy economic influence rendered them practically under Columbian control. Ericcson looked to the coast. The Leadbetter road was built, consolidating Columbian political and Economic control in the Northwest Frontier. On his deathbed, Senator Jar Ericsson signed onto the creation of the first Olympian colony, on fertile land south of Cape Flattery. These colonies, in the far future, would be the forerunners of the numerous Duchies that resulted in the Olympian Empire and our Lord Emperor Henrat VIII.
The Columbian Federation, under the Second Ericsson Senate, 159 AC-173 AC
In Ericsson's death, the Eastern Faction remained in control, continuing many of his policies of expansion, exploration of old Portland, and were most notable for their expansion of Pastoral land in the Upper Columbia and the foundation of the Newport Colony, a distant outpost and later capital of the Newport Republic. The Second Ericsson Senate sent the First Fleet of Columbia and eventually made contact with the Mexica polities along the Pacifican Coast. These expansions did not come without undue cost, however; new settlers, committed to the Columbian promise of prosperity and trade, began to seize political power on the fringes of Columbian life. This culminated in the 173 AC Pioneer seizure of power, in which the new and massive pioneer faction rioted in View. Eventually, the Second Ericsson Senate surrendered to rioters. This was how the Pioneer Era began.
The Columbian Federation, under the Pioneer Senate, 173 AC-189 AC
The Pioneer Senate, a populist group dedicated to the rapid expansion of the Federation at any costs, passed the Diego-Ferrara Homesteader act of 175 AC. Ignoring tribal lands and long-standing trade partners in the Clatsop region, homesteaders and Pioneers settled the entire Clatsop region, establishing pastures and farms. The creation of settlements in Old Seattle Chieftan lands brought the last remnant of the Vancouverian chiefdom style of governance to an end. Vast amounts of post-catastrophe tribal heritage and material culture were wiped out in the Pioneer fires, as land was cleared to make way for cattle grazing. Settlements high in the Columbia river valley were expanded or settled. It was during the Pioneer Senate period that the greatest period of expansion in Columbian history began and ended. It was a bloody and brutal period. However, the Pioneer members of the Senate still did not feel they had enough power nearing the end of the senate era. A group of conspiring Senators created an army out of a group of pioneers in Clatsop and stormed view. Instead of the relatively quick and painless transfers of power that had happened previously in Columbian history, fighting overtook the great cities of Cathlam and View. They were burned to the ground and rebuilt. The frontiers became a vast battleground. The Columbian Civil War devestated the land, the people, and the prosperity of Columbia. In the end, a fleet from Leadbetter sailed into the maw, took Cathlam and View, and declared the foundation of the Pioneer Council, an autocratic parliament not so different from the reign of Rennik I.
The Columbian Federation, under the Pioneer Council, 193 AC-210 AC
By the end of the civil war, the Columbian heartland and the entire Columbian lower valley had been decimated. However, the new dictatorial oligarchy resolved to continue the expansion. After all, it was in their god-given right. It was to be the last period of expansion until the great Cathlam Revival of the 5th century. Trade to the Vancouver Kingdom was followed by a short war and the creation of the Olympian protectorate, a formalization of power in the Olympian colonies. A period of consolidation and rebuilding in the Columbian valley also lead to unintended consequences in the east. New cattle barons destabilized the state and shot inequality to a level never before seen. Even if expansion was underway, it was an illusion. The council was a sham ruling over a dead state. Only a reinvention of the very concept of Columbia could bring the nation out of the depths of civil war.

This is a project that's been worked on in different forms for quite sometime. I had a post-apocalyptic map of the PNW nearly done until i kicked my outlet and lost all progress because my dumbass forgot to save. I might do a few more of these later, it's a setting i've been interested in forever. Constructive criticism is welcome. Also, does anybody have any idea how to make trade routes look good? everytime i draw them they just look like pixelly lines on the map.

I like it, the details are good. What caused the apocalypse?

Climate change and inequality initially lead to societal collapse and resource wars with limited nuclear use. (Not total destruction, but most urban areas were obliterated) A freak plague following disease being released from melted permafrost was the final nail in the coffin.

Not only is there a system that looks almost like the Tigris Euphrates, it sits at exactly the same latitude as Iraq, which can basically just be superimposed on it. I smell a horrifying ISOT-swap story inbound…

Whenever I see a wacky idea for an ISOT scenario, I immediately black out and wake up five minutes later with a half-finished map open in Paint, and this was no different. Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of time to work on it today due to holiday-related family shenanigans, but I wanted to post it before the original post got forgotten, so here's the map minus color key and footnotes. I'll probably refine it and finish the writeup in anywhere between twelve hours and eight months, depending on whether my ADHD feels like cooperating.

Surprised the Soviets didn't go through with their plan for a Finnish Democratic Republic (though lucking it up, it seems they had similar treaties as the proposed one for them as they did with all three Baltic States, so it might have just been a matter of time). Also the issue of how they generally made border areas their own SSRs, while depriving areas on the interior of Russia of that right. They probably would have a Lapp ASSR or Sami ASSR on this map of yours just to do with the naming conventions, though perhaps they would have had it as a Finnish SSR, with a Sami and Karelian ASSR within them. With all the Swedes who didn't flee likely getting deported from the area, like how all the Kola Norwegians were sent to Karelia. I do actually wonder how the Sami would be treated. As being primitive Finns? People who needed to be moved from the border? People who would be used to claim Swedish and Norwegian land? I half expect the Soviets might try keeping Norwegian Finnmark here, though might be they wouldn't have moved as far into it as IOTL or they simply traded it for the more valuable German areas the Allies pulled out of.

EDIT: Put Finnish where Swedish was meant to go.

Seems like I've got one more map idea left in me. The full version can be found on DeviantArt.

Here's one last map for the year, for real! This one, though, once more for the RDNA-verse, is a "worlda"-type profile covering the main ideological alignments of the Free World.

This was inspired in part by the sleek interfaces and customized stylings seen in the Thousand Week Reich and The New Order mods for Hearts of Iron IV. Surprisingly, the general aesthetic works rather well with this form of map.

As an added touch, the map also features a taste of things to come, and it's not just the additional details on the various figures shown. But also in giving a preview of the flags for the Assembly of the Free World and League of Neutral Defiance, the latter for the very first time.

Similarly to A World at the Precipice (Vidscreen), this is also presented as an in-universe creation. Though whether it's from (and intended for) the people behind An Examination of Extra-Universal Systems of Government or the Agency mentioned in other maps...I'll leave it for you to decide.
wink.gif

And lastly, and just to be safe, this is a work of fiction. This is not meant to be a political or ideological screed.

With all that said, hope you all have a Happy New Year and see you in 2020!

A Basic Introduction to the Free World:

The geopolitical landscape has long since settled into a long Cold War that has lasted for almost a century. On one side are the expansive domains of the Collectivist Internationale, the so-called "Red Menace" spawned from the Terror. On the opposing camp is a motley collection of various countries loosely referred to as either the "Free Nations" or the Free World. The latter term, however, is something of a misnomer due to its connotations.

Strictly speaking, the Free World refers to the myriad Royalist and Republican countries which endured through the chaos of the Terror. These in turn have various blocs, alliances and pacts amongst themselves. Among the Royalists, for instance, are the "Three Crowns" of the New World (particularly the Royal Dominion of New Austria and Loyalist Dominion of Canada) and the wider "Engelnstadt Concord" (which includes the powerful Empire of Japan). This is to say nothing of the "Twin Republics" of Gran Patagonia and the American Federation, or the Free Pacific Pact (including the Sovereign Republic of Free China), among others. Of course, there still remain much in the way of rivalries, fierce competition and outright disputes, most notably involving of Legitimate Union of Brazil and alleged manipulations by Republicans. Nonethless, for all their issues, they all stand fairly united in preserving their way of life and holding back the Collectivists.

Then, there are the states that comprise the loosely-tied League of Neutral Defiance. An indirect consequence of the Terror, these countries adhere to an umbrella group of ideologies known as Reactionarism (such as the Kingdom of Joseon's "United Front" and Colombia's "Bolivaristas"), with the "Anglo-Mosleyites" of the Free Republic of Australia seen as the leading variant. Although similarly opposed to the Collectivist Internationale, the League's "members" also make a point of standing apart from the other Free Nations. In addition to their comparative isolationism, they are also defined, albeit in myriad forms, by their emphasis on "purity" and racial, cultural or ideological supremacy by means seen as excessive by others, which would be comparable to several authoritarian and fascistic regimes. While these have also led to disputes amongst themselves, such bouts have failed to shaken their resolve against the Reds and even the "degenerate" Free World that they barely tolerate more of.

Every non-Collectivist polity is at least nominally part of the Assembly of the Free World, founded in 1960 as a formal replacement to the ineffectual International Concert. Though largely seen as more of a proverbial "gathering hole" for the various blocs and still dominated by the major powers that backed its founding (such as the Americans and New Austrians), the alliance's ranks have since grown to truly encompass the globe. This also means the inclusion of Reactionary states as observers, in an effort to both foster reform and exert diplomatic pressure. In spite of such developments, however, the odds of those regimes becoming actual members remains a far-off prospect.

Barring any significant developments or overt acts of aggression by either side, this state of affairs may well go on indefinitely, at least on paper. Just as concerning as an endless standoff, however, especially as this long Cold War drags on, are the cracks and tensions that had been accumulating with each passing generation. Despite its nigh-paranoid preparations and armaments, while the Free Nations (whether Republican, Royalist or Reactionary) remain defiant, some are wondering at just how far they would have to go in order to stop the madness. Which is not to ignore the activity going on behind the Red Curtain.

Increasingly, it seems, it is becoming less a matter of if, but when then Free World flinches.

- Recovered fragment from "An Introductory Primer to Other Worlds." Unknown. 2022 Edition.

On top of the various references mentioned previously, the additional portraits are based on various historical figures corresponding to their respective countries and comparable ideologies. King Giacomo III of South Italy, for instance, is based on Prince Amadeo, Duke of Aosta, who in real life was Viceroy of Italian East Africa during World War II, while Hisahito of Japan is based on Takahito, Prince Mikasa (Emperor Hirohito's brother). Free China's President Sun, coincidentally, is based on Sun Fo, the son of Sun Yat-sen and an influential figure in Republican China even after the rise of the People's Republic.

For the Reactionary figures, Australia's President Wellington-Mosley is partially based on A.K. Chesterton (the second cousin of Catholic writer G.K. Chesterton), who in real life was an active member of various groups, including the British Union of Fascists alongside Mosley himself. Colombia, meanwhile, has President Valencia, based on Laureano Gomez, who was suspected of having sympathies for various dictatorships and Francisco Franco especially. While Joseon's puppet monarch, Yeong, is based on Yi Kang, Prince Imperial Uihwa and to a degree Chinese Emperor Puyi.

The flag used for the Assembly of the Free World is a heavily updated version of this old work from 2010. While that for the League is a combination of the Sonnenkreuz and the globe from the early United Nations flag (c.1945), while also utilizing colors based on Oswald Mosley's "Flash and Circle" emblem.
