The Beginning

The goal of this thread is to show off maps, (mostly) wikiboxes, and articles from the World of 'Legacy of the Bull Moose' where Theodore Roosevelt against all odds wins the Republican Presidential Nomination in 1912 and becomes the 28th President beating Democrat Champ Clark.

Discussion in this thread is welcome I am pretty new to doing wikiboxes and maps and all types of edits so advice is welcome.

Most of this will probably be dumped on my days off work.

Sorry if the map is really bad I am trying to use 'Historical Geographic Overhaul' mod for Hearts of Iron 4 to make the maps.

The map is to signify the world borders in 1924, After 'The First Great War' 'Irish Wars for Independence' and 'The Turkish War for Independence' .

For this timeline I am kinda wanting to take things in a chronological order, showing major events from each time period, the majority focus in this timeline is on the United States however I will make sure to delve into Geopolitics in different time periods as well as different nations national politics.

Anyways thanks for reading and enjoy 'Legacy of the Bull Moose'

Special Thanks to: @Goweegie2

Edit: Retconned 1924 Map to add Czechoslovakia and edit the borders of the states that used to be a part of Austria-Hungary

The Bull Moose rises
Now onto the Bull Moose himself.

I dont wanna spend too much time on Teddy pre-divergence because I mean why would we.

When popular former President Theodore Roosevelt threw his hat into the ring to be the Republican Nominee in 1912, President Taft thought this would be a simple nomination, he had the party machinery behind him right? Well sort of, the Republican Party establishment decided to appease progressive elements within the party and support a full on presidential primary, every delegate bound themselves to the winner of their state, they believed that the American people believed in the process and norms they had grown used to. Where a president serves 2 terms and is done, they were wrong, Teddy swept the primary, Taft put up a fight in the Solid South and La Follette put up a fight in the Steel Belt, but it wasn't enough. Teddy got the Republican Party Nomination, proclaiming his fight for a "New Nationalism" and his progressive vision for America. Teddy picked Conservative and close friend Henry Cabot Lodge as his running mate, and the die had been casted. On March, 4th 1913 Teddy entered the White House renewed, with an agenda to make every American proud, restore faith in public office, and do good for the American people.

By 1915 Teddy had enacted serious political and electoral reform, Women's suffrage, direct election of senators, universal primaries within the Republican party (delegates tied to vote based on the popular vote for the first ballot), recall elections, referendums and initiatives, strict limits on campaign contributions and disclosure of them as public information (including the registration of lobbyists). And economic reforms, A Federal Reserve bill backed by the progressive wing of the party (Treasury Secretary Louis Brandeis was a staunch supporter of this), and a Federal Income Tax.

Then the Lusitania sank, Roosevelt enraged went to Congress seeking a declaration of war, whipping progressives and moderates behind him in an attempt to enter the war, and on September 17, 1915 Teddy got his wish, a United States Declaration of War on the Central Powers on the side of the Entente was signed, American soldiers began landing on the beaches of France in the thousands in April 1916. With Leonard Wood as Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Force War went smoothly. German Armistice was signed on March 17, 1917. For all the opposition the American public had put up to fighting this war, they were riding a high with it ending, Theodore Roosevelt, Leonard Wood, and Secretary of State: Charles Evans Hughes were wildly popular, Republicans retook Congress in 1918, However that mattered little, when Teddy and Hughes returned from Peace talks in Europe they faced opposition within their own party, Conservative elements within the Republican Party refused to sign the Frankfurt Accords, a peace deal between the Entente Powers and Germany + Austria-Hungary, reason number 1 being a provision that would create alliances between the Entente and The United States, wanting to avoid foreign entanglements Congress ratified the Munich Agreement, except for the provisions about Entente alliances.

Teddy's last political achievement was "The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1920" which established a federal minimum wage and an 8 hour work day.

Theodore Roosevelt Retired to his estate in 1921, passing away in 1922

1912 Election Wikibox
The election of 1912, a tumultuous event at that, with Incumbent President William Howard Taft being challenged by former President Theodore Roosevelt for the Republican Party Nomination. When all was said and done, Roosevelt insisted that close friend and conservative Henry Cabot Lodge be his running mate. Lodge accepted, their relationship as President and Vice President would later be full of Lodge contesting Roosevelt's decisions

All while this is going on cracks within the Democratic Party begin to show, with Champ Clark and Woodrow Wilson fighting for the Democratic Nomination, Clark who was Speaker of the House, and the front runner from the start, secured the nomination on the 10th ballot, with the backing of Tammany Hall and after the Walk out staged by William Jennings Bryan and Progressive Delegates within the Democratic Party.

Bryan originally planned to run a 3rd party bid for the White House on a Ticket of his Populist 'Farmer and Labor Party'. However on August 12th of 1912 Bryan instead announced his support and parties support of Eugene Debs and The Socialist Party ticket. This support bolstered Debs in the Great Plains, Debs did not win any state but did finish with 9% of the popular vote, a rallying cry for The Socialist Party going forward.

In the end Republicans swept both the Popular Vote and Electoral College, with Roosevelt winning 34 states, including Clark's native Missouri. Democrats only won the Solid South. With 32.6% of the Popular Vote the Democrats were defeated very handily, Roosevelt will later note that the Republican Primary was harder to win than the General Election. Angering many of his Democratic contemporaries.

1916 US Presidential Election
Going into the 1916 US Presidential Election there was a modest Republican Majority in Congress and with Roosevelt in the White House Republicans were riding relatively high, but oh how quickly would reality hit that Americans are displeased with this war, both Williams and Bryan campaigned heavily against US entry into The First Great War, with Bryan dubbing it "The imperial war to end all imperial wars". It quickly became an uphill battle for Republicans, with some turning against Roosevelt just to fight and keep their seats in Congress. Roosevelt increasingly unpopular with the American Public made his case for entry again and again, believing America had a right to defend itself against German aggression, and while the legislative achievements of the Roosevelt Administration and Republicans in Congress drew people in the war effort drove others away.

For Williams and The Democratic Party, this was the year, they could secure a majority in Congress and the White House, all until Bryan announced his Farmer-Labor Party would be running for the presidential elections, for the Democrats their hope was he'd endorse the Democratic candidate or just retire from political life, but no, to Bryan this was the time, Bryan being staunchly anti-war and anti-imperialist decided he should throw his hat back in the ring, if there was gonna be any time it was to be then and there. A popular incumbent who was floundering and a split within their party, it was an easy victory, till reality hit and it really wasn't.

US entry into the First Great War mobilized the American Left like no other, while the AFL supported the war effort, unions like the IWW protested it, lobbying for laws to protect their members from being drafted, mobilizing their supporters to support Socialist, Farmer-Labor and Labor parties. and with Bryan's Farmer-Labor getting support from the Socialist Party for the Presidency it all just fell in line for the American Left, a Popular Coalition, for the working class and against imperialism, local columnists in Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and in North and South Dakota were expecting a Left wave in their states, and American Leftists rejoiced when they were right, with Farmer-Labor taking both Nebraska and Iowa in the Electoral college and taking different local and even a few Congressional Posts in these states. The American Left was mobilized.

I get it that it's not the focus of the timeline, but I would like to know why Czechoslovakia is disunited ITTL?

Mostly just with a more moderate peace Slovakia was given independence but within the Hungarian sphere of influence, this does change however

The First Great War
*** Deleted the boxes on Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution because I wasn't very happy with them and they felt rushed and boring and the whole time I did them I felt out of my element.***

**BUT HERE IS A QUICK WALL OF TEXT ON THE GREAT WAR**

The conflict is not too different from OTL so I felt kinda constrained doing a wikibox for it so I decided a "few" paragraphs would do.

Sarajevo, 1914, Europe is shaken to its core, heir assumptive Archduke Franz Ferdinand shot dead in the streets by a Serbian nationalist. Europe thrown into chaos as Serbia rejects an Austro-Hungarian ultimatum, rallying the Russians, then Germans, France not far behind, and The United Kingdom following suit after the German invasion of Belgium. A world on fire and a stage that had been set. With the Ottoman Empire and Italy joining the war not much long after. Trench warfare ensued and the war stalls on the Western Front.

Then on May 7, 1915 somebody poked the Bull Moose, the RMS Lusitania sunk, killing 128 American citizens. Roosevelt enraged mobilized American troops and went to Congress looking for a declaration of war, Congress laughed him off a couple of times before giving it to him in September of 1915, with troops in the thousands reaching the Western Front every day starting in April 1916.

Even though the war was decisively in the favor of the Allied Powers at this point the February Revolution happened in Russia, with a republic being declared. Lenin would arrive in Russia just a few days after the German Armistice.

With a Bavarian breakaway state and strikes in the Rhineland Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated on March 17, 1917, with Crown Prince Wilhelm, becoming Kaiser Wilhelm III and declaring an armistice on April 8, 1917.

"Treaty Season" had commenced and Roosevelt was on his way to Europe, with the main post war document being the Frankfurt Accords. The Frankfurt conference was intended by the French to be peace for both Austria and Germany, with the original French ideal to be to split Germany between Austria and Prussia, making them turn conflict towards each other and slapping them both with heavy reparations. Neither Russia, UK or US really wanted this however, with Kerensky's trying to honor his promise for an independent Poland. The treaty resulted in reparations on both Germany and Austria, German ceding of Alsace-Lorraine to France, Memel to Russia, Posen to Poland, Schleswig to Denmark, giving up its territorial possessions, and the adoption of a constitution forcing the Germans into a parliamentary system heavily limiting the power of the Kaiser. Austria suffered a similar fate, having to cede Sudtirol, Carniola, Kustenland, and the Dalmatian coast to the Italians, having to cede their Slavic territories to the newly formed 'Yugoslavia' as well as cede Galicia to the newly formed Poland, Transylvania for Romania as well as independence for the newly formed Czechoslovakia. The "Entente Council" was created among Entente member states and nations created out of the end of the First Great war, with the only exception being the United States, who's Congress refused to participate. The Frankfurt Accords were signed on September 12, 1917, officially drawing the end of the First Great War.

I am currently working on posts on the situations in Russia and Ireland so I can hopefully have those out *THIS* week.

Changing Gears
So I think I wanna change gears for this TL and goto the modern day instead of slowly progressing it towards the modern day, like i still like the idea of it starting from the divergence and going from there but I think going to 2019 and doing major events and stuff just seems more fun for me, like i got burnt out very fast doing it how I had been doing it, so im gonna get a world map for 2019 done and post the list of US presidents.

Curious alignment. It is strange enough to see Ross Perrott among the followers of Long.

The Union Party is more a breakaway from the Democratic Party moreso than it is Long's Party, Long is still a big part of creating it but its mostly a party of anti segregation democrats which evolves into a centre to centre right party

About the German-Russian border, wouldn't Russia rather keep more of Poland than take Memel?

About the German-Russian border, wouldn't Russia rather keep more of Poland than take Memel?
It was mostly to appease polish independence movements at the end of the war, with the original plan for Poland to be much smaller however some areas got to vote to be ceded to Poland and some did, however with the voting happening in the 20s and being reliant on the states each area belonged to to set the rules on voting Germany didn't act necessarily fairly, and Russia had more concerns at the time with Bolsheviks in Finland and an attempted military coup

I am honestly curious to see what exactly happened to change the term Limits? or even the lengths of a Presidential term?
term limits just weren't established, the Kennedy administration contemplated making it law, but both major parties stop nominating after 2 full terms after Long so it became a bit of a pointless endeavor
