This map is a part of @damein fisher's timeline "The Greatest Game In The World" on alternatehistory.com, which will eventually culminate in this mess, although the timeline is currently still in 1848. Essentially the idea is that the North and South just keep compromising on slavery (which eventually turns industrial) all the way up to 1905, when the country just shatters. The US also completely fails at building railroads to the West for far longer than in our timeline, and as a result industrialization and transport links to the interior of the country happen far slower.

I have a ton of maps of stuff that happens in the later years of the timeline; I just worry that posting them here might give people the impression that the TL is more complete and detailed than it is.

Back home again in Indiana
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight
Still burning bright
Through the sycamores for me
The new-mown hay sends all its fragrance
Through the fields I used to roam
When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash
How I long for my Indiana home

I have several questions. To start, how did the poor Dominican Republic get dragged into this?
Also what do the various light blue revolt stand for?

Looking good! Do you have any recommendations for guides on using QGIS for map making? It's been years since I used the programme...

ksituan has a guide for it here, though it's by no means complete. Aside from theirs, there's also the documentation for your version, some "historical map" guides here and there on the net (useful if you want to learn how to project basemaps onto your layers for tracing), and YouTube vids/stackoverflow threads for more specific advice.

QGIS takes a bit of time to get used to, given that it lacks a lot of things someone who'd use GIMP or Inkscape would take for granted without some customization. But those three are the best places to start learning arguably the best open source mapmaking tool today.

Ok folks, I'm doing a north America as Europe world, and I have Mexico, Texas, Arizona+New Mexico, New York (minus NYC), and New England (plus part of the upstate) as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the UK, and Ireland respectfully. What would the other states be?

Then I would use:

The Pacific States of America as Yugoslavia, which broke up into Cascadia, California, Deseret, and maybe some more states.

The Great Lakes states as Germany (with Illinois, Indiana and Ohio as former East Germany)

So, ITTL Russia would be Canada and the rest of Europe the U.S.?

I guess then Brazil would be China, and the other way around

WIP, Looking for advice how to make it look better.

In all honestly, it's way better than you think, however, I would make some of the independents a new party or part of another, as the mormons (if they exist here) would probably make their own independence party.

also, where would I fit Iberia on here? (I could do the cascadia region, but they could also be a croatia-equivalent.)

There I would change a few things:

- Virginia as Switzerland
- add North Carolina to Italy
- Florida as Greece (maybe together with Cuba).
- add Minnesota and Iowa to Germany, as well as Missouri and "Little Egypt". Instead of this, use North Dakota as Czech Republic, South Dakota as Slovakia (this fits better with "velvet divorce" and a formerly united country), Kansas as Hungary, and Oklahoma as Austria.

Also, regading Iberia, you could go for Ontario+Quebec+Labrador (Newfoundland then as Portugal). This would mean that Quebec can serve as Catalonia analogue!

The iberia idea is good,
Virginia is France due to Belgium being maryland
Greece I could do the maritimes for
Them being near germany is due to how I can't really show the pre ww2 lands (aka ohio being the eber(?))
Kansas and Oklahoma could be like slovakia and moldovia?

"[Smith swore that he] would yet tread down his enemies, and walk over their dead bodies; and if he was not let alone, he would be a second Mohammed to this generation, and that it would be one gore of blood from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean; that like Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was, 'the Alcoran or the Sword,' so should it be eventually with us, 'Joseph Smith or the Sword.'"

The above is almost certainly a complete fabrication by a disgruntled follower, but it did provide me with a jumping-off-point for a Mormonism-as-Islam expy which is unusually lazy even by my standards.
