Most school maps curve or straighten the borders of historical states, disregarding territorial claims and depicting inaccurate spheres of influence. I learned that from AP World and APUSH.

Might be the map makers are Romanian nationalists, and that thing thing we see is Transnistria.
It is not a state. Despite th eplacement of the words, it is actually just one of the Aleutian Islands.
i just checked that and actually it's not--the parts of Siberia north of Kamchatka are on the North American Plate, but Kamchatka itself isn't
though a series of countries based on the tectonic plates would actually be pretty cool, if implausible--feels like it could work for an alternate Gundam or something
