Return of Horrible Educational Maps

After posting maps in Chinese, Thai, Turkish, Italian, etc. I guess it is only fair to show that German mapmakers can fail as well:

Most school maps curve or straighten the borders of historical states, disregarding territorial claims and depicting inaccurate spheres of influence. I learned that from AP World and APUSH.

Maybe the color represents the Geologic Plate the area is on?????? Kamchatka is on the North American Plate.
i just checked that and actually it's not--the parts of Siberia north of Kamchatka are on the North American Plate, but Kamchatka itself isn't :p

though a series of countries based on the tectonic plates would actually be pretty cool, if implausible--feels like it could work for an alternate Gundam or something :)
