Just got my hands on Flint's "The Alexander Inheritance"...

...though due to the relative lack of MANLY AMERICAN UNION WORKERS this seems to be primarily written by the co-authors.

So far it seems a lot like the original ISOT in setup. Hopefully it won't disappoint like Stevie boy did.

A little clunky and exposition-y to start, and it's a bit convenient that they have a lady who just so happens to be a specialist on the Diadochi on board, but whatever, it's all in good fun.

I like the continuity nods to the previous stories and the sense that people in the Ring of Fire base universe are starting to grok that somebody is randomly ISOTing bits of the world for some silly reason or other.

He's gonna keep milking 163x for the rest of his life. One, it's interesting. Two, a lot of the characters are a lot of fun (my girl Gretchen SPREADING THE REVOLUTION under the banner of McDonald's, ).

Three, there is just so much that can be done with it.

Stevie boy has basically lost any chance he had of becoming a better writer at this point, I think. Embersverse gave him protection from editors and that kinda exacerbated all the problems that had been building since Draka.

The Alexander Inheritance was pretty okay, I feel like more could have been done with the characters, there's some questionable plausibility, and the ending felt more like sequelbait in that it didn't properly wrap up anything. As usual I'd like to see some speculation about the future of the setting.

The main 1632 series is good, and I can see it going indefinitely because it's fairly open-ended and there's a bottomless well of stories to draw from the setting, and I'm okay with that.

Anyone read Time Spike? It's another spinoff of the Ring of Fire setting, instead of a small town or a cruise ship its a maximum-security prison (and some others - Hernando de Soto's expedition, some Cherokee from the Trail of Tears) sent to the Cretaceous. That one suffers from some of the flaws as the Alexander Inheritance in that the characters can be pretty flat and there's some questionable decisions, but like most ISOT stories I'm just here for the speculative fiction.

I love Time Spike! I used to have it on my computer after downloading it from Baen (it was part of a collection that they were giving out free, IIRC), but I think it got lost when my hard drive crashed. It wasn't so much AH as pulpy sci-fi, but it was a Hell of a lot of fun.

The CDs are still available for legal download at Joe Buckley's (yes that Joe Buckley) website, you just have to download the whole CD and can't do individual books anymore

Will second Time Spike being awesome, think it was better than The Alexander Inheritance personally, want to see more of the task force investigating the Assissti Shard events

Personally I preferred Inheritance to Time Spike. I don't know - it did something for me that Time Spike just didn't. Maybe because the idea of a Cruise Ship going through the Mediterranean in 321 BC.
