They had a high amount of autonomy under the Qing dynasty, and were mostly left to their own. During the Nepalese invasion, the forces fighting them were entirely Tibetan; the Qing did not send any forces to Tibet, although they did have larger issues to face. The Qing tried to keep the Han, Mongol, Manchu, and Tibetan parts of their empire separate, and as a result unrest in one part did not necessarily translate to unrest in other parts. The relationship between them was sort of like the internal politics of Poland-Lithuania.

Apparently for some unknown reason "Liu Cunhou" at wikipedia now redirects to "Deng Xihou". They're admittedly both Sichuan warlords but on the other hand they're still different people, and the Deng Xihou article only mentions Liu Cunhou once. I can't figure why this is a thing.

So, to continue my work on this project, I've decided to compile an exhaustive record of political changes during the warlord era. With the understanding that it it is difficult for a map to accurately and concisely display them all, I have decided to make this in list form, which will both make it much easier for you to find information you need, and also for me to make refinements and corrections to my own maps. Here is the first part, which concerns the various government(s) of the Republic of China, from 1915 to 1928 (later I hope to extend this project to encompass the remainder of the mainland ROC's history, but for now I will focus on the Warlord Era proper):

Also, if anybody could find some detailed sources on the history of any of Sichuan, Xikang, Guangxi, Hunan, Gansu, Qinghai, or Hubei during this period I would significantly appreciate it. Specifically Sichuan.

well if I do find anything I'll be sure to share though I must admit that sadly my resources on Chinese history for specific provinces is definitely sparse.
