Pop-culture in TL-191

He could have been some pimply resistance fighter in the city, gunning down Freedomites.

"You ain't my neighbor!"
I picture him to be a rather vocal anti-war figure and someone who'd try to foster understanding between different peoples, not wanting children to face the same horrors he did.

So since Mr. Rogers was born and lived in Pittsburgh I'm wondering how different he'd be in timeline 191.
Fred Rogers wasn't born in Pittsburgh (it was a small city nearby) and didn't turn 18 until 1946, so I don't think the war would have directly affected him. That being said, if he is still ordained later on, that combined with being that close to the front line could actually increase his Mr. Rogers-ness in a "never again" sort of way.

Yeah and there dixies and black to be integrated in the americas, if he get his show push the idea of forgive and integrated? that could be revolutionary, more if socialist later on make a more decent PBS.

I wonder how Japanese society would evolve after the second great war. And whether they'd be as dominant as they are otl as far as consumer electronics and cars go, along with pop culture. (video game, movies and anime)

One thing i'm not sure anyone thought of this, but I wonder how catchy "World of Barrels" would be as a title of an online P2W game.

After I finished reading In at the Death, I started thinking about what television might be like in the US, fifteen or twenty years after the end of the war.

Well, in our timeline we had a television situation comedy called "Hogan's Heroes" which centered upon a bunch of conniving allied POWs constantly pulling the wool over the eyes of their bumbling German captors. Given the fact that such a vicious ground war took place right in the middle of America during the Second Great War, I don't think that the people of the 1960s would be ready for a lighthearted comedy dealing with complex issues such as the Freedom Party, prison camps, and war on the home-front, so I don't think that a show like Hogan's Heroes would get the green light in the 191 universe?

However, I think that US television viewers of the 1960s (including people in the defeated Confederacy) might like to watch a light heated situation comedy set during the First Great War, and that maybe such a show might be centered upon events at Nellie Semphroch's coffee shop during the CS occupation of Washington DC. I imagine Nellie doing wacky things such as putting sleeping pills into the coffee of a Confederate officer in order to prevent a CS campaign against Philadelphia, or maybe Nellie's daughter seducing a Confederate soldier and tricking him into telling her about CS troop movements in the area. Maybe some of the CS characters are actually are harmless likeable people who just find themselves on the wrong side of history. Like Sergeant Schultz in Hogan's Heroes.

But, I think that there would definitely be a popular spy-thriller show, similar to "I Spy" in our time line. However, in this incarnation of "I spy" two free lance agents travel the world tracking down CS war criminals who are wanted for various things including everything from genocide to embezzling the entire CS treasury. Perhaps the 191 analo of Bill Cosby could be a character who survived the Freedom Party death camps, and is now traveling the world with his white partner in order seek justice for what occurred to his family in the camps? Also, there would have to be plenty of reformed and good hearted Americans from the New South who are only too willing to help the two agents track down the CS war criminals they are seeking.

Or, what about an episode of the 191 version of Star Trek (Star Patrol) in which the crew of the Federation star-ship USS Essex are taking part in an advanced weapons test, but the weapon malfunctions and unknown to the crew of the Essex, their ship is transported to alternate reality.

In this version of reality Federation space is empty of all ship and radio traffic, so Captain Johnathan T. Kirk orders the Essex to return to Earth. However, once in orbit above Earth they realize that something wrong as they do not find any signs of the advanced technology associated with their version of the twenty third century. Instead technology roughly equivalent to the twentieth century is observed.

Kirk takes a landing party down to San Francisco to find out what has happened to Star Fleet headquarters. However, upon their arrival the crew of the Essex find that the San Francisco Presidio, (the approximate location of Star Fleet headquarters) is now a Confederate military base, and that all of America is now ruled by the Freedom Party, and that locally is is the year 1967. (I actually imagine a scene where they stumble onto the christening of a nuclear submarine, with a lot of Confederate officers making blow hard speeches.)

The crew manages to steal period correct clothing, and Dr. McCoy (who is from Georgia) coaches them to speak with a southern drawl. Meanwhile, a problem occurs with the dylithuim cystals on the Essex, and the crew cannot be beamed out of San Francisco.

The crew make their way to a boarding house on Bedford Ave. in San Franciso (Grant renamed after Nathan Bedford after US losses war) where they meet a middle aged woman who is part of the resistance against the Freedom Party government. The woman tells them that there is a secret US redoubt in the hills on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, where members of the now outlawed US government are waiting for a chance to overthrow the Freedom Party regime.

The woman takes the crew of the Essex to the secret redoubt which is well hidden in the hills of Marin County. The entrance to the US Government redoubt is protected by a steal plate which was salvaged from the hull of the US battleship, USS Oregon shortly before the US surrendered to the CS in 1947. Inside the redoubt Kirk meets US President Harry S. Truman. Although he is approximately eighty years old, Truman considers himself to the the legitimate president of the United States, even though he has little authority outside the secret redoubt hidden in the hills.

Truman explains to Kirk that the Freedom Party won by supporting anti-war movements in the US during the 1930s and 40s, and by signing peace treaties with naive Socialist leaders who were eager for peace at any costs. Truman goes onto explain that the CS attacked after the US was tricked into demilitarizing, and that the US was too demoralized and corrupt to defend itself. Kirk is alarmed by this news, and orders Spock to give Truman plans on how to build advanced weaponry to fight the Freedom Party.

Lieutenant Uhura realizes that she may be the only black person on the North American continent, so she offers to stay behind in order help the flickering US government hiding in the redoubt to regain its rightful place. Kirk initially disagrees, but then comes to understand her position, and gives her permission to stay on this version of Earth.

Meanwhile, the ships engineer, a German named Siemens, radios down and informs Kirk that he had devised a method for repairing the ships power crystals, but it will involve going aboard the new CS submarine in San Francisco.

Truman's aides provide Kirk and his party with stolen CS uniforms, and US agents from the redoubt help Kirk and his party get aboard the CS sub where they are able to collect the high energy photons needed to revitalize the Essex which is still in orbit undetected.

The mission to collect the photons is a success. As Kirk is saying good bye to Truman, they both pause to say the Pledge of Allegiance to a ragged 48 star US flag which last flew over Philadelphia before the surrender. Truman promises that the flag will once again fly over the nations capitol, and that the nation will be reborn.

As the Essex warps out of Earth orbit, a blackout starts on the West Coast of North America and quickly spreads east indicating that Truman's followers have launched their attack.

Okay, it is sloppy, but you get the idea.

A few versions of a very popular song from 1863, I can see a version of it coming off the heels of the South's victory in the War of Secession, and another version from the Second Mexican War.

Now i wonder how a lincoln movie would be ITTL? a two part one the young lincoln and end with the distrasous war of secession and later on the old lincoln as the old stateman of socialist?

Bringing up the Disney matter once again, I wonder whether the Sinclair administration may have prevented the kind of business blackmailing that forced the Disney brothers to sell Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. In that case, Oswald may have turned out to become Disney's greatest star and mascot, with Mickey Mouse probably not even existing. I don't know which impact that may have had on Goofy and Donald Duck, though.

Something from OTL that I could definitely imagine being similar in TL-191. I'd like to think that an alternate version would have the perspectives of soldiers from all sides of the war from around the world during the last year of the First Great War.

Depends on who's writing the movie. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lincoln movie attempted to redeem him in some way, shifting the blame for losing the war from him to General McClellan and the Europeans.

What types of AH fiction exist?
Anything with a surviving Freedomite CSA is probably going to have a hard time getting published, either through government censorship or by publishers not wanting to touch such a controversial topic. Most American AH might focus on the First Great War, the rise of the Socialist Party, or victory in the Civil War

""The past couple of years, there'd been a spate of what people called "worlds of if" novels. If the USA Had won the War of Secession or the Second Mexican War, if the Negro uprising had succeeded in the CSA, if the Red uprising had succeeded in Russia.... If, If, if. Dealing with the world as it was was hard enough for most people. Flora didn't think the "worlds of if" fad would last",
-I believe this quote came from The Center Cannot Hold or in The Victorious Opposition

I wonder what King of the Hill would look in TL-191. It might've been butterflied away entirely! If not, i'm pretty sure the characters would be significantly different. The location might be different completely! Bill would probably be Pennsylvania Dutch instead of Cajun, Hank might be the son of an even more traumatized Cotton Hill (though i'm not sure if Cotton fought for the Union of the Freedom Party.) Dale might be a Private Investigator, and Boomhauer might as well speak german. To be honest I have no idea how it would look or would take place.
