WI/AHC: No United Nations

After World War II, the League of Nations was abolished and it was reborn into the United Nations with the hope that it would prove to be more successful than the League of Nations. In some ways, it has, but in others, it has failed. The Rwandan Genocide, the Serebrenica massacre, Darfur, and the Syrian civil war are just some of the black marks on the UN's history.

So what would've happened had there been no UN? What would need to happen for this to be achieved?

Two rules for this challenge

- The League of Nations remains abolished

- The Allies have to win World War II

In the immediate post-war era the UN played an important role in the Korean War, decolonization, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Without the UN these events would play out differently.

Despite all of its failures; the U.N. if nothing else has provided a pressure release for international crisis's which if had not been debated, blustered and bogged down in diplomatic rhetoric could have easily brought countries to war for the most childish reasons. We would be living in a more militaristic period of time.

On a lighter note, less diplomatic plated vehicles illegally parking in NYC and less unpaid traffic and parking violations.

there would be another organization that would play the un's role. the un is really only a chamber for the great powers of the world to resolve differences and contradictions between themselves, and that's why it was set up in the wake of the war

What episode post WW2 would force this other organization?

Great power mediation has always been more effective when it is bilateral and involves backchannels. UN Mediation only works when Great Powers are not active combatants.

Maybe France and Britain hold the line in 1930 and Germany is eventually beaten by the Entente (maybe with Soviet intervention at the end) by around 43. The LoN is seen as a dead letter and without American intervention there is no push for a replacement.

@Peg Leg Pom That much I agree with, but would it be the nuclear testing done by the U.S. at Bikini, the tests performed by Russia, MacArthur threatening to nuke China or the Bay of Pigs? In short, what would be the catalyst?

The UN provides useful framework for international cooperation. It would be much more inconvenient to organize meetings and various international efforts always on ad hoc basis. This is essentially the same reason why there exists smaller regional multilateral organizations even if they don't necessary have that much power. In addition, it is useful to have various international organizations under the UN umbrella. If the UN wasn't established, something like that would probably still become a thing at some point.

I do remember George F. Kennan complaining in his memoirs that in his opinion FDR became too conceding towards Stalin because he wanted the Soviet support for the establishment of the UN, something Stalin wasn't completely sold on.

Perhaps regional orginisations and things like the Commonwealth and French Community can take on some of its humanatarian and peace work

The Korean War would be the likely catalyst, though I would expect that there would already be suggestions being made that something should be done to prevent another World War.

I tend to agree, but it would be post Korean War which would make the composition of the USA / South Korean led military interesting.

At the latest the formation of a U.N. would be post Cuban Missle Crisis.
