The University of California, Sunnydale is a public research university situated in the town of Sunnydale, California. UC Sunnydale is the youngest UC school in the state, having only been opened in 1974. This fact is further accentuated by the fact the school was shut down following the 2003 Sunnydale sinkhole catastrophe, which saw much of the campus badly damaged and the entire student body and faculty evacuated. Following the resettlement of Sunnydale in 2008, UC Sunnydale would be reopened in 2011.

UC Sunnydale was, prior to its initial closure, a well-renowned research university that received the third-highest grants of any UC school, behind only UC Berkeley and UC Los Angeles. The reopened UC Sunnydale did not receive the same level of funding, but despite being the second-smallest school in the UC system (ahead only of UC Merced), is ranked fifth among UC schools and is considered among the top 50 schools under the age of fifty. The low enrollment at UC Sunnydale in large part is attributable to the unusually high mortality rate students at UC Sunnydale experienced from 1974 to 2003, as well as the unusually high rate of disappearances and murders in Sunnydale during that timeframe. While the modern Sunnydale and UC Sunnydale do not have the same disproportionate rates, these incidents have given the school a negative reputation and caused the rebuilt school to suffer enrollment problems in its early years.

There are a number of conspiracy theories surrounding UC Sunnydale, largely as a result of the 2007 revelations surrounding the existence of vampires and preexisting interest in Sunnydale as a hotbed of paranormal activities. Several vampires, including vampire rights leader Harmony Kendell, allege that UC Sunnydale served as the site for a government-run, Slayer-operated vampire internment camp where vampires were subjected to ruthless experimentation and termination. These claims have been disputed by both the US government and the Slayer Organization, though declassified government documents do indicate a disproportionate number of UC Sunnydale faculty from 1984 to 2003 were on the federal payroll.
Oooh, I love this sort of thing.

That bit at the end there is reference to the Season 8+ comics, yeah?

For a possible timeline I might be doing based on the excellent DBWI Hearts of Iron IV mod Führerreich: Legacy of the Great War, where I take that mod's timeline and continue it to the present day, here's the President of the United States in 2019 in my version of this TL

Adam Sharp.png

Adam Michael Sharp IV was born on February 7, 1972 in Spokane, Washington to Elizabeth (née Koenig) and Adam Michael Sharp III. His mother was of German descent and his father was an Ashkenazi Jew who converted to Christianity. His Polish-born great-grandfather Anglicized his name from Adam Meier Szapiro to Adam Michael Sharp. Sharp IV was largely raised in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He graduated from the University of Idaho and later Harvard University. He would work as an attorney until 2004, when he was elected to the House of Representatives. In 2010, he would be elected to the Senate. During his time in Congress he largely towed the Republican-Progressive party line, but once he ran for President in 2016 he changed to a more populist tone, a label which he has rejected. He won the 2016 Republican-Progressive nomination as a dark horse. He went on to narrowly defeat his Democratic opponent Fátima Rivera, the first major party nominee from the state of Baja California, despite losing the popular vote. He was sworn in on March 4, 2017, succeeding Fernando Franco of Puerto Rico. As President, he has passed a burqa ban, tax cuts for small businesses, and cuts to AmeriCare, the United States' universal healthcare program. He also controversially appointed Christopher Meijer to the Supreme Court, and intervened in the Phoenician Civil War. His approval rating currently sits at 33.8%, and with several strong contenders in the 2020 Democratic primary, he is not widely expected to win reelection.

The German Union (German: Deutsche Union, DU) is a political and economic union of 20 member states that are located in Central Europe. It has an area of 536,091 km^2 and an estimated population of about 86.5 million. …

Through successive enlargements, the German Union has grown from the seven founding states (Brandenburg, Frankfurt, Hesse, Holstein, Mecklenberg, Saxony and Thuringia) to the current 20. The DU reached its current form on 1 January 1999, with the ascension of Hamburg; it currently encompasses all German-speaking states, with the exception of Switzerland. No member state has yet left the Union, although Bavaria has a referendum on continued membership scheduled for 2020.

Starting in 2004, the DU has allowed German-speaking subnational governments to join as observers. Unlike full members, observers are not party to the Union's major treaties, and do not elect members to the Nationalversammlung (National Assembly). Participation is limited to certain DU institutions, such as the the Council for German Orthography.

@Kermode , an infobox about my homeland again! I like it! Do you have any more information on this German Union? Is this a continuation of the 19th century Deutscher Bund/Norddeutscher Bund, or was Germany once united and lost wars like in OTL?

  • Why is Austria known by a 2000-year-old name like "Noricum"?
  • Why does Bavaria want to Baxit?
  • Why was Hamburg admitted so late?
  • Are all members democratic, and if yes, was this always the case?
  • How many members are constitutional monarchies?
  • What parties or coalitions dominate the Nationalversammlung? Was there a recent election?
  • Who governs the individual nations? Are there any green or left-wing parties going strong?

Little is known about the man reported to be at the center of the events of the Chicago Incident (2019). The confrontation between poorly-understood supernatural powers that killed thousands and injured tens of thousands more is still seared in the national consciousness, along with the revelation that the supernatural is real. What is known is that Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on October 31, 1975, to Malcom and Margaret Dresden. Mrs. Dresden, formerly the wife of Brutus Raith, died of complications during birth, leaving Malcolm Dresden to raise his son alone.

Following the death of the elder Mr. Dresden, the Ohio Office of Children and Families reports that Dresden was passed between foster homes until coming into the care of one Justin DuMorne, a British expat living in the United States. Several years later DuMorne was killed in a fire along with Dresden's foster sister Elaine Mallory, and came into the care of Missouri resident Ebenezer McCoy.

From circa 1994 to 2010 it is believed that Dresden worked as a private detective who partnered with the Chicago PD on a number of cases, including the 2000 Third Eye Drug Ring, the murder of Ronald Ruel (2002), and the 2001 Wolfman Murders. During this time Dresden also advertised his services as a Wizard in the phone book and made several appearances in public, including on the Larry Fowler Show, during which time an on-set incident was blamed on Dresden and the television personality sued him.

Rumors about Dresden abound, that he was enthralled by a vampire for some years in the early 2000s, that he has defeated the Antichrist and prevented him from creating a global pandemic, that he led an army of resurrected dinosaurs against an ancient demon who aimed to become a living God, and that he is the keeper of Excalibur, possibly even the reincarnation of Merlin himself. Some say that he has become a King among the Fae and commands a guard of fearsome warriors from beyond this world, taking the title of Tsalord, a mantle of grave power and influence.

Following the events of the Chicago Incident (2019) public demand to understand the events that led up to the deadly confrontation spurred endless congressional hearings and a number of changes. Among them was the decision to appoint Natalia Raith as White House Special Adviser on Supernatural Issues. Ms. Raith, a graduate of Yale, has held a number of positions which placed her in regular contact with a number of supernatural entities still only poorly understood, including the Fae, the White Court of the Vampires, and the White Council of Wizards. This connection made her a natural choice for the position, following what President Trump referred to as a "very history tragedy." Anonymous sources close to the President claim that she has quickly entered President Trump's inner circle, and has spent a great deal of time in meetings with him, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Special Adviser Ivanka Trump. Briefings with 2020 Democratic candidates have been reported to be extremely fruitful, with the exception of reportedly disappointing meetings with Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Pete Buttigieg.

John Marcone is the founder of the Better Future Society, an organization that has been instrumental in the reconstruction of Chicago following the Chicago Incident. Marcone, a property developer whose business interests led him into contact with the supernatural, has partnered with members of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit, including former SI head Karrin Murphy (ret). Since then Marcone has been eager to assist governments worldwide develop connections to supernatural entities, often partnering with private security contractor Donar Vaderrung and Monoc Securities.

Rumors of criminal involvement, or that he a "freeholding lord" among the supernatural community, have been proven false, as many who resent the influence he has gained have attempted to discredit him. Lieutenant Edward Hendricks, an associate of his who was his superior officer in the First Gulf War, has testified that Marcone has always had the best interests of the American people at heart and showed exemplary service during the First Gulf War. Marcone himself has declined to comment on these allegations, instead directing all inquiries to the head of his legal department, Helen Demeter.

But which is your homeland ITTL? :)

The basic idea I had here is that the Austro-Prussian War ends with a decisive Austrian victory, and Prussia is loses territory (namely its Rhine provinces) while Austria cements themselves as the leading player in the German Confederation. However, the Habsburgs' attention is divided between the Confederation and their non-German lands, and so the Confederation doesn't coalesce into anything greater, and it withers into irrelevance. The Confederation is then followed by a few other attempts at unification but none of those go anywhere, either, until the German Union is established in the 1950s (and even then, it didn't really get going until the 70s). "German Unification" is still a romantic dream ITTL, and the German Union is supposed to be the organization to finally do it.

For the rest of your questions, I'll go point-by-point:
  • Noric Republic was actually a proposed name for the Republic of Austria IOTL. The reasoning behind it was that since the new state of German-Austria didn't want to be seen as a successor to the Habsburgs, picking a name unrelated to them would more readily symbolize their break. That reasoning made sense to me so I thought I'd use it here. Plus it gives a little bit of extra flavour.
  • Baustritt (that's my name for it) is driven by Bavaria having a very strong regional identity and being more conservative than most of the states, so it feels increasingly out-of-place in the DU as integration ramps up in the 2000s.
  • Hamburg's late admittance is meant as a reference to Hamburg's OTL late admittance to the Zollverein. But they have similar objections to the DU: Hamburg is a port town that relies a lot on trade, and joining the DU means abandoning its current trade agreements in favour of the DU's. It wasn't until the 90s that the DU had become a large enough of trading bloc for Hamburg to seriously consider membership.
  • All the members are democratic; it's a prerequisite to joining. Seven constitutional monarchies: Bavaria, Hannover, Liechtenstein, Lippe, Prussia, Saxony and Westphalia.
  • as for the Union's politics… well, that would be a natural follow-up should I continue this (and I do have a few ideas), so I'll refrain from answering except to say, yes, there are leftists and greens in government.
Happy to see it sparked your curiosity!
