What is the Visitor government like, does it have elections? What is their ideology? Since they seem to be much more advanced than us (and as such they would likely be more progressive), wouldn't there be a major faction advocating for ending Alien discrimination. Couldn't we all live together as a multicultural/multi species society? Also, if they have lots of people on Dyson spheres, wouldn't there have been a rebellion by now? The whole plan seems waiting for a revolution.
The Visitors don't see us as utter animals. If anything, the fact that we have nukes is enough to make them really feel like they have to at least humor us with pretending to see us as equals. However, the Visitors ultimately are not built for prolonged life in space. Yes, they have space stations that are essentially impervious but the constant tick of "what if" never goes away. Nothing in the cosmos matches going outside and just being able to breathe. Not having to worry about carbon count or radiation exposure. Just, being. Not to mention the rugged feeling of being somewhere not completely out of your control but not in it by any stretch either. Every being on a space station is designed. there is no mystery. There is no little quirks. A "little quirk" could kill millions. To put it another way, in a lot of fiction, aliens invade because they want earth's resources but see eveything else as scud. The Visitors, however, are here because of earth's beauty, not in spite of it, in hopes that they may one day be visitors no more. Which is also why humans are in the process of being off worlded. We would have killed the planet and everything on it. This is part of why the Visitors also arent too torn up about off-worlding us to stations or barren worlds. "They seem to like it better that way, anyway."

Wouldn't that mean that most environmental protection supporters would work together with the Visitors?

Easy and Familiar
The 2016 Nagasaki General Election was fairly mundane, aside a notable increase in support for the Christian National Party and Chisuji, reflecting broader concerns about Nagasaki's relationship with the neighbouring Japanese Federation and the Kingdom of Portugal, the latter with whom they share a monarch (as well as the increasing number of evangelical protestants throughout the country, including an upset victory for the CNP on Takashima Island). Primary issues included state security, childcare reform, and the wider economic slowdown. Granted, the nation of some 1.2 million Nagasakinese had not been affected nearly so severely as in the neighbouring Japan, Shanghai or Korea, largely thanks to the good stewardship of the Popular Action Party. But with faltering growth and an unprecedented degree of Japanese migration occurring a push back against the party was widely seen as inevitable, with punters giving the PAP poor odds from the outset of the campaign season.
Their main opposition, the Nagasaki Catholic Union, ran a conventional campaign spruiking their economic credentials and policy of strong borders. They vowed to limit legal migration and halt illegal entries, as well as ban the Chisuji organisation, which was well received by a general public infuriated about attacks by militant Japanese unionists on regular Nagasakinese and the PAP’s impotence in addressing it. However, this campaign was dulled somewhat by the intervention of Pope Alessandro (the former Archbishop of Nagasaki Saburo Cardoso), who preached a message of compassion and tolerance towards Japanese immigrants.
Economic woes, calls for comprehensive childcare reform, and university funding disputes did lead to the emergence of the ‘New Democracy’ Party, built on the backs of students and middle class families, who won a single seat in Gotomachi, but this was by a slim margin to the incumbent NCU member.
Though the victory was expected, and a coalition was formed with ease the following weeks would be marred with violence as Chisuji party members, angered by the coalition’s inclusion of the nationalist Free Nagasaki Party, started riots and attacked both FNP and NCU offices, particularly in the north of the country. This proved so endemic and widespread that the city of Saikai would be placed under martial law and northern border crossings closed for some weeks. This would mark an uptick in violence throughout the city state and an increasingly authoritarian government response in the years to come.

Just a quick scenario for a surviving Portuguese Nagasaki I’ve been wanting to do for a while, and not my best work. Feel free to ask questions. The title is from a quote by Alessandro Valignano, who was the head Jesuit priest appointed to oversee the introduction of Catholicism to Japan via Nagasaki and is in reference to his attempts to learn and preach in Japanese. The full quote reads: “This tongue is as easy and familiar as our own.” He was what the Catholic Church referred to as 'adaptionist'.

Eh, a lot of people work together with the visitors. A lot of staunch environmentalists arent a fan of the idea of aliens loose on the earth, mucking up our ecosystem.

Here is my map from MoTF 198, depicting the forced dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after an alternate WW1:

The Nations of the Danube

A History of the Nations of the Danube

When one Gavrilo Princip failed to assassinate the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand, everyone thought a crisis had been narrowly avoided. However, what followed was arguably even worse.

Less than one year later, Franz Ferdinand became the emperor of the Central European power he was born in. As he was an advocate of the movement for federalization, his first action was the creation of the Federated States of Austria-Hungary. Autonomous governing bodies were created for many distinct regions. That didn’t mean he was open to all ethnicities within his empire’s borders, though; for example, he was much more friendly to the South Slavs than to the Hungarians. In the end, his reforms only made each part of the Empire drift further apart.

In February 1916, a crisis erupted between France and Germany between colonial claims, eventually extending to continental Europe. On the 15th of February, George Clemenceau delivered an ultimatum calling for the return of Alsace-Lorraine, which was promptly ignored by the Kaiser. War broke out, and the powers of the Entente, Britain and Russia, immediately took France’s side. Emperor Franz Ferdinand joined Germany’s side based on their defensive pact. And so, war broke out.

Austria-Hungary initially had to fought only in the Eastern Front, but even there they faced difficulties against the Imperial Russian forces. Things got worse when Italy joined the war, forcing the Dual Monarchy to split their troops. After 3 years, in 1919, few things had changed. Two years later, the war was still raging despite all predictions, and had expanded to the Balkans. Once the Allies seemed to be winning in the troubled region to the south of Austria-Hungary, problems began to appear. The country was fighting in two fronts again (Russia had made peace after revolutions and civil war), and by this point was still alive only due to German backing. Mutinies were common, and more and more revolutionary organizations were being formed.

In 1922, the Dual Monarchy reached its breaking point. The German-Austrian forces in the Balkans completely collapsed, and one by one, major cities there were falling. Salonika, Skopje, Tirana, even Belgrade fell. Once Belgrade had been reached, the road to the interior of the Empire was open. That was when revolution occurred in every corner of it, from Bohemia to Transylvania. The Allies initially supported any movement that they could agree with, but soon started sweeping through the Hungarian Plains and Illyria on their own. In 1924, the structure of Austria-Hungary was completely absent. Numerous rebel movements were fighting the Entente and A-H Army, and were also often fighting between them. This conflict that raged even after the end of the Great War was ended in 1925 with the Treaty of Nice.

The Treaty of Nice established a system often known informally as the “Danubian Power Balance”, where all nations carved out of the former Empire were purposefully weak and dependent on the Entente for aid and support. Their army was limited, and their government also had limited power. The nations of the Danube were mostly based on ethnic boundaries, which has helped the stability, but no one pretends the group of nations is stable. Nationalism is on the rise, especially in Czechia (mainly against the Sudetenland) and Hungary. And with tensions also rising all over the globe and a new war approaching, the Danubian powder keg could erupt at any moment.

Earth 2199 - WIP
Just thought I would share a little WIP that I've been doing. World is set in 2199, said WIP is set some 50ish years after the conclusion of the "Great War" or Eurasian War, which ended many nations.

Quick overview

Main points that are here is that Asia is seeing it's second "Golden" Era, having to rebuild itself in the conclusion of the conflict. China went though a democratic revolution followed by a communist coup not long after, here is the 2nd People's Republic of China.

As China's control over Asia faltered for a while the India and Indonesia found itself centre stage, each exerting their influence over the region with Thailand's attempts of doing the same stifled by being stuck between them.

With Europe, the European Federation came into being towards the later stage of the 21st century and has expanded its membership to the states in Northern Africa. Another note, the Sahara desert is home to vast banks of solar power, much of which is channelled to power the vast metropolis of North Africa and Europe. the EF found itself as a major player in the Eurasian War. As the European armies pushed the Eurasian (Note: Names are defiantly subject to change!) back they found themselves facing a wall of Nuclear fire, which had deployed to stop their advance. In short due to this event, with the addition of internal issues the Eurasian Collective eventually succumbed and collapsed leading to the states of Eurasia. The economic issue of the war, and the poor assistance from EF to help their associate states (such as Poland and the Baltic nations) lead to them leaving the European Sphere to create their own two blocs, one with the power located in Warsaw and the Other Keiv.

Obvious, the backstory is subject to change where relevant as too the map itself, I just wanted to share and get people's opinions and critique.

Nicely done! It seems this is more densely populated than the same area OTL, having only a fraction of the area of OTL's Nagasaki Prefecture with almost as large a population (1.2 million to 1.35): it seems to me that Nagasaki city proper would take up more of the territory, unless it's some sort of City of London/London distinction with only a small part of a continuous built-up area being "the city."

Thank you! Yes it is denser, as Nagasaki city IOTL isn't particularly dense at all; 1,000 people per km2. In Singapore it's 7,800, and Hong Kong it's 6,700, so there's definitely room to cram 'em in the existing space so far as I'm concerned, and with a long history of Portuguese investment and thoroughfare it makes sense to grow so large comparatively. I probably could have had more seats further north, and so more dispersion, but you can chalk that down to dense urban planning.

EDIT: Oh, and I think part of the disparity can be explained by the fact I was using a WWII map as a base map, and obviously Nagasaki was a lot less built up then so I extrapolated from that period rather than modern maps. So there's that.

Quick End to WW1 WiP Iserlohn.png

This is my personal take on an early Entente victory during the First World War.

The Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, and Romania also don't join the war, but Italy does, albeit too late for it to matter much. The war ends with Germany losing significant chunks of territory, almost all of its colonies (they keep most of Kamerun after some horsetrading involving the concession of German East Africa), and the Austro-Hungarian Empire drastically reduced in size.

Russia and the Ottoman Empire use the remaining 1910s to reform themselves politically in an attempt to ensure greater internal stability. The Armenian Genocide is essentially diverted, though some attacks on Armenian communities still happen after the creation of the Armenian Autonomous Vilayet. These sorts of attacks and unhappyness with the relative slowness and gradualism in the Ottoman Empire leads to an increase in the Armenian diasphora. The Tsarist regime in Russia passes some legislative reforms, strenghtening the still weak Duma somewhat. Furthermore Russia (re-)creates several entities to exist within Russia, modeling them all on the Grand Duchy of Finland. These entitites are Poland, Lithuania, Courland, Georgia, and Armenia. A Ukranian entity was discussed, but thus far no actual legislation has been passed to create one (yet), mostly due to concerns about the borders of that Ukraine.

In the spring of 1917, after a period of political instability, revolution broke out in Norway. Both in the bigger cities and in rural areas socialists quickly gain territory, arguing that the Norwegian government has failed to deal with the people's economic needs, critising the failure of the government in dealing with trade disruptions (mostly related to the Great War), as well as the war-time prohibition on alcohol (which wasn't lifted when the war officially ended in the summer of 1915) and a drastic increase in the wealth gap. By the end of the year the Kingdom of Norway was no more, and the Norwegian People's Republic, the world's first socialist state, had come into existence.

The year now is 1930, fifteen years after the end of the Great War, and new challenges are on the horizon...

Map of the provinces of the Commonwealth of America

Commonwealth Map 2.png

After the French-and-Indian War, Great Britain takes possession of France's territories west of the Mississippi (which are much more populated than in OTL) instead of Spain. GBR then reorganizes the entirety of their North American colonies into North and South with the Ohio River, the Mason-Dixon, and the Potomac being the main demarcation lines.

The American Revolution happens but is put down eventually as the North and the South are reluctant to join forces. The French Revolution still takes place and Napoleon still comes to power. During the Napoleonic Wars, the stress put on the colonies by the British causes the rebellion to start anew (largely spurned on the the sizable French minorities in both the North and the South), but it is put down in the North. In the South however the rebels have much more success and are eventually able to win their independence under General Andrew Jackson.

Now the South is an independent presidential republic while the North (which includes most of modern day Canada) forms the Commonwealth of America.

I think you should probably have Maryland and maybe even Delaware included in Dixie. It may not seem like it today (I should know, considering I've lived in Maryland all my life), but before the American Civil War, Maryland was considered a firm part of the South, as much as Kentucky or Georgia. So if your POD is the French and Indian War, you can bet your britches Great Britain is putting tobacco-growing, slaveholding, south-of-the-Mason-Dixon-Line Maryland in with the rest of the South.

Edit: Also, a few other nitpicks. Mormonism may not exist or will have a different rise to prominence in a TL with a POD in the 1750s, therefore Utah would probably be different. And cities out west like Flagstaff (founded in 1876) probably won't exist at all.

But it's a great map, still.

Crosspost from MotF 198:
Whelp, here's my first ever MotF entry, which I named "Free Our Comrades!" This map is supposed to be a piece of Russian propaganda from my timeline Man-Made Hell: A History of the Great War and Beyond, with the map depicting territory lost by the Russian Soviet Republic in an alternate Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.

The map was apparently too large to upload as a file, so it can instead be found here

Excerpt from National Geographic Society's "The War of Persuasion: Propaganda of the Great War," published circa 1968

From its very inception, the Russian Soviet Republic's history was defined by warfare. The discontent that led to the Russian Civil War emerged from Phase One of the Great War, in which the backwater and extremely aristocratic Russian Empire was decisively defeated by the German Empire and her allies within the Central Powers, and the Soviet Republic itself was forged from a nearly three year-long civil war against the monarchist White Army and the social democratic Green Army.

Therefore, the Russian people were obviously tired of endless warfare by the time the Red Army secured most of Russia west of the Ural Mountains. As Leon Trotsky began his infamous campaign eastward into Siberia, Vladimir Lenin negotiated a peace agreement with the Central Powers in 1918 at Brest-Litovsk that established numerous German puppet states in eastern Europe and recognized the independence of a German-aligned Ukrainian Republic. Handing over some of Russia's most valuable territory to German imperialism was far from popular, however, it was viewed as necessary to end the Eastern Front and pull Russia out of the Great War.

After the Red Army won the Russian Civil War and Victor Chernov's Russian Democratic Federative Republic was exiled to Siberia, the Russian Soviet Republic began to rapidly industrialize under the leadership of Premier Vladimir Lenin. Even if the Eastern Front had fallen silent, the Great War still raged on in the west. The buildup of the Red Army only further accelerated when the Second French Revolution began following the escalation of mutinies in 1921 into a civil war between the French Third Republic and socialist French Commune, and the Comintern continued to expand into the frontlines of the Great War when a trade union strike in Great Britain turned violent in 1922, leading to the formation of the Workers' Commonwealth.

Things only got worse as fascism, a reactionary ideology that served as the antithesis to Marxism, rose in the Kingdom of Italy under the leadership of Benito Mussolini. A ceasefire may have been declared on the Western Front by German forces, who were ordered not to interfere in the Second French Revolution, but Soviet-German tensions were continuing to grow, especially as the fascist German Fatherland Party of Alfred Hugenberg rose to prominence in the Reichstag. In the January of 1923, Hugenberg assumed the position of chancellor, promoted intervention in France, and ultimately declared war on the French Commune. This infuriated the Soviets, who had been building up their military force for four years by this point, thus leading to a Soviet declaration war on the German Empire in the February of 1923 and the beginning of Phase Two of the Great War.

As General Leon Trotsky began his invasion of eastern Europe through the Principality of Belarus, the Soviet war machine was completely mobilized, and propaganda was distributed throughout Russia. This particular propaganda poster (named "Free Our Comrades!") was produced early into Phase Two and depicts German puppet regimes in eastern Europe as oppressive pawns of Berlin, keen on exploiting the East European proletariat, whilst also depicting the Soviet Republic as the liberator of eastern Europe. It is worth noting that the Principality of Belarus is labelled as "West Belarus" to invoke a mindset that Germany split the Belorussian region in two, while Germany is labelled with the more hostile and reactionary name "Imperialist Germany."

Title translation:

"Free our Comrades!
Victims of the Brest-Litovsk Treaty"

Bottom translation:

"Years after vile imperialists forced us to give up a huge tract of land in Brest-Litovsk Treaty for peace, thousands of our comrades have since suffered from German imperialism.

Poland faces a new division between Germany and Austria-Hungary, and further degradation of Polish sovereignty is inevitable ...
Ukraine, once free from German and tsarist oppression, is now ruled by a fascist tyrant...
Our Belarusian comrades lost half of their nation to the German puppet regime ...
The Baltic proletariat is oppressed by the German bourgeoisie ...

We will free our comrades!
We will return what was lost in 1918!
We will always protect the east from imperialism!"
