Say that Britain in the 1840s has strategic or economic interests in California and sees it as best for them to prevent a wider, violent conflict between the U.S. and Mexico over the region. Britan was so unpopular in America in the
1840’s that no POTUS- especially one as
intent on expanding the US as Polk was-
would have dared to accept British med-
itation. It just wouldhave been too unpop-
ular.
