T-72BM during the the Operation Manchurian Free (1990-95),
Operation Manchurian Freedom, known by some local Manchurians as the First Manchurian War, was an armed conflict led by the Union of Sovereign Socialist Republics, consisting of an invasion of the former Chinese provinces of Manchuria, and a period of occupation and combat against a dwindling insurgency. The operation began in 1990 with the Siberian invasion of Northern Manchuria, ending in the annexation of the region by the USSR.

Operation Manchurian Freedom is often divided into two main phases, with the first phase only lasting a few short months, known as the Invasion Phase. This phase included an invasion of Manchuria starting on April 1990 by a Siberian invasion force. It was followed by a longer but sporadic and minor second phase of fighting, known as the Post Invasion, or Insurgency Phase, in which an insurgency emerged to try to oppose the occupying forces and the newly formed Manchurian government. Resistance to Siberian rule would continue largely until 1995, when Siberian officials declared that the insurgency had officially been exhausted, lacking proper supplies and reinforcements to continue.

The war is considered the largest conflict to erupt in the region since Doomsday, followed by the Second Manchurian War which would occur twenty-two years later following the bombing of a passenger train heading from Primorskaya Territory in Siberia to Korea, killing 137 people.

Sinulog Festival in Cebu City, Philippines. Picture was taken either pre-Doomsday in 1983 or after Doomsday (January 1984). The Sinulog festival continues to this day and is an iconic festival in the Cebu National Administrative City.

Australian city of Adelaide before Doomsday.
In 2010s the city has a population of 1.3 million, home to numerous governmental and financial institutions of ANZC, and is noted for its many festivals; sporting events; its food, wine and culture; its long beach fronts; and its large defence and manufacturing sectors.

Georges Othily (1944-2017) recently elected as president of the Guyana regional council shortly before Doosmday, he managed to keep control in Cayenne, the capitol of French Guyana and the Guiana Space Centre and surrounding areas, relying on the police forces and the 3rd REI (Infantry Regiment) of the French Foreign Legion. In the first months the hardly accessible regions outside the coastal region proved still dangerous but not as lawless as many parts of the world. The short but brutal Brazil Invasion (November 1983) failed thanks to FFL defense, especially around Kourou Space Center. In 1999, Jean-Pierre Alazaire, the commander of the French Foreign Legion in the "Korou Incident" and elected prefect (based on a administrative reform in 1995) two years before, propagated the idea of declaring French Guyana a sovereign nation. Meeting nearly no opposition and securing French and Brazilian acceptance, work on a constitution began.
Alazaires idea was to position the new Republic (just called Guyane) as a neutral state not belonging formally neither to France nor an South American country. He saw the potential and possibilities arising from the intensifying South American and global trade and of course the importance of the Guiana Space Centre.
So the constitution declared neutrality and a rather direct democracy. A liberal tax system was set up aiming to attract international companies aiming on the growing trade between the Europeans and South Americans.
The new state came into being January 1st 2001, coinciding with the first start of a new "Odysee" Rocket from Korou.

NENA-99-LUFTBALLONS-2.jpg

"99 Luftballons"(Neunundneunzig Luftballons, "99 balloons") is a song by the German band Nena from their 1983 self-titled album. The lyrics of the original German version tell a story: 99 balloons set free by a couple of friends are mistaken for UFOs, causing a general to send pilots to investigate. Finding nothing but children's balloons, the pilots decide to put on a show and shoot them down. The display of force worries the nations along the borders and the defense ministers on each side bang the drums of conflict to grab power for themselves. In the end, a 99-year war results from the otherwise harmless flight of balloons, causing devastation on all sides without a victor. At the end, the singer walks through the devastated ruins with a balloon. Thinking of someone, they let it loose and watch it fly away.
Relased shortly before the Doomsday, the song is still considerred as one of the most tragic and emblematic song of the 1980s Nuclear Apocalypse.

And to think, such an upbeat song is actually about the end of the world...

I'm not saying Keith Urban won't tour the surviving nations.

He moved to the U.S. in OTL in 1992, which in ITTL won't happen since much of the continental United States is destroyed. Nashville was hit too. As for Kidman, her chance of survival is slim (I still have to research where she was when Doomsday occurred). Even if she did survive, they won't meet at all since separated by thousands of miles of ocean.

Keith Urban actually recorded his first OTL album in 1991, before moving to America, so he could have a viable career in Australia ITTL. Also, why would Kidman and Urban be separated by thousands of miles of ocean? Kidman was also living in Australia in 1983.

Manuel Noriega, the de facto leader of Panama prior to Doomsday. Noriega seized power in August 1983 but was not yet firmly in control of the country. Though he survived the Soviet strike on Panama City on Doomsday, he was certainly killed in 1985 by the violence that engulfed country as it collapsed.

Pakistani Special Forces SSG enters what remained of Afghanistan on April 25, 2009 and established the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan with the capital in Qandahar. SSG mainly served as advisors for the newly created Afghan Army and continues to fight local insurgents and Soviet holdouts still remaining in the once lawless region.

The FFL 3rd Infantry Regiment, stationed in the South American Territory of French Guyana, was and still is based in the Guiana Space Centre in Korou, at DD charged with guarding the European Space Agency installations there.

It currently counts roughly 950 troops, having been increased in the recent years from around 600 to represent some kind of national armed forces of the neutral Guyane. Some people criticize the steadfast loyalty to the Prefect Jean-Pierre Alazaire, their former commander making them kind of a Presidential Guard. They mainly serve as the force maintaining order in Guyane, especially the capital and at Korou. Also the security of the many organizations and companies lays in the hands of the Legion. They cooperate closely with the Gendarmerie of Guyane.

Their main task is still guarding the Space Centre but a second answer has been set up in the capital of Cayenne. The Regiment maintains its traditions by still having a rigid and hard selection process for new recruits willing to join the LEF.
