Brest was a strategic seaport for german navy in WW2 and main objective of US-Operation Slegehammer.
British troops in a landing craft assault (LCA), photo was taken some days before the British landing on Contentin Peninsula, in order to seize Cherbourg. If Operation Sledgehammer was a sucess, the british operation was a bloodbath and Cherbourg city was totally destroyed thus gaining a sad nickname of "Stalingrad in Normandy".

U.S rangers enjoyed a rest after harsh battle for Brest, despite the german complete surprise to see thousands of US troops land on Brest, the battle for Brest Harbor was hard.
