I'm quite surprised that Brazil would be hit with nukes considering the fact that the country lacks such to warrant such unless it's part of some strategy by the Russo-Chinese alliance.
Those aren't nukes. If you're referring to the area in the south, that's a zombie outbreak, and if you're referring to the giant blob in the Amazon, that's the Amazonian hivemind.
Oh, my bad, sorry, I assumed those black areas are otherwise.

Some more progress. It's slow-going, because I'm not entirely sure what the East Indies should look like in a world with less colonial interference (and obviously I want to avoid space-filling empires). I imagine there'd still be a fair bit of terra nullis in the interior and mountainous regions even in 1880-1890 so I'm sticking with that. China is big, and an empire, and also really into racial science. It is not a good place to be, though it's also pretty powerful.
Those are Leygurian protectorates over Japan and Korea (separately). Since the whole idea is that Leyguria is way less dickish about colonies than any OTL power, I like to imagine some kind of "Colonial Cultural Preservation Office" in Leyguria which has the job of preventing too much assimilation. I mean, there's only so much you can do, as cultural exchange is a thing and a lot of European/Leygurian customs will be bleeding into Japan and Korea due to the whole "overlord" situation, but I wouldn't expect to see either nation converting to Christianity en masse or anything like that.
Oh, and China's provinces have been drawn at random. I know that historically many provincial borders didn't change between dynasties or even regimes, such as Yunnan, but chalk it up to laziness that I didn't transcribe any of those borders over for this map.
Edit: And another note about China; the northern regions are pretty loosely controlled. Banditry is common, and the population is still majorly non-Chinese. There are still native Siberian peoples there, like the Yakuts, as well as Scandinavian fur-trappers, Turko-Mongol tribes, missionaries of every colour, and so on.

I had a few hours, so I pieced something together:

Gone ahead and expanded on Africa--really happy with how it looks now.
Three great Revolutions have defined the millennium: the French, the Russian and the Iranian. In 1979, Iranian students, bazzaris, clerics and the military joined together to throw out the American-backed Reza Shah Palhavi, establishing the Islamic Republic of Iran with Khomeini at it's head. Following a brutal power struggle between the various wings of the Revolution (including a brutal war against Iraq), a new, liberal democratic regime was established against all odds in what many call the "Miracle of Tehran". Khomeini, who had been sidelined during the power struggle, became the spiritual leader of Iran and a symbol of Anti-Imperialism much like Gandhi 3 decades prior. This sparked a series of social and political changes across Asia, known as the Dahe-e-Farj--Decade of Dawn.
39 years hence, and the world is completely different. China underwent democratic reform, transforming into an intra-party democracy; a liberalized Soviet Union let go of her vassals; an Indian civil war against Hindutva fascism was fought and won; and Europe made the step towards integration. Africa however, is still trapped in the age of Revolutions.
Southern Africa is dominated by a soft-Apartheid South Africa that looks terribly out of the place. TTL Apartheid had a stronger emphasis on the Bantustan system, with the rhetoric that "Apartheid is good for blacks" being strongly advertised. There is a ruling class of Boers and Anglo South Africans, a middle class of East and South Asians, and finally the lowest rung of native Africans. Aggressive Protestantization and cultural Westernization has transformed the richest areas of Petoria into a gated community that looks like something straight out of the Benelux; but also creating sprawling slums that house "kaffars" (blacks) who are slave workers in all but name.
Kenya, Tanzania and other East African state have created Mashariki Federation in opposition to the South Africans. It is, as a polity, the premier economic, military and geopolitical power on the continent, and is aligned with the Iranian-led "Third-world bloc" as a somewhat Conservative Democracy. Mashriki forces are heavily involved in UN peacekeeping operations in the Congo, and is not afraid to show it's displeasure with Christian extremism in Ethiopia.
West Africa is dominated by a triple entente of democracies: Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana. Unlike OTL, the Pan-African movement has actually been somewhat successful, with Africans being able to share a hatred of South African imperialists and Egyptian dictatorship. The triple entente is logically dominated by Nigeria, which trasitioned to a federal system following the Biafra War, soon choosing to align with the USA. Ghana is the poster boy of African independence, being the first to break free from Imperialism. "Nkruhman socialism" dominates the country, with the Ghanans being therefore fiercely opposed to any foreign meddling in African affairs. Finally, Senegal is aligned to European interests, emphasizing their lingustic and cultural ties with France. Senegalese legionnares are the single largest foreign contributor to the French Foreign Legion.
Egypt went through a Neo-Nasserist coup in the '70s, establishing a Islamic Socialist Republic more akin to OTL Khomeini's Iran than anything. The Egyptian ISR aggressively expanded beyond it's borders, entering an unholy alliance with the Saudis and given free rein to take charge of Societ assets in the African Cold War following the Soviet Union's withdrawal from the third world. Following their victory in the "War of Zionist Aggression", the Egyptians were catapulted into international infamy, and is seen as too big to fall by many democratic powers.

I recognize the large Sweden (which I'm a big fan of), and what looks like the Golden Circle in the Americas.
Current progress on a one-shot scenario I'm making, bonus points to anyone who can figure out what this is inspired by / a parody of.

Yet more progress. South America is proving to be difficult. I think the only thing I'm sure about there is that there will be a surviving Incan state in the Andes, but other than that, I'm not sure how best to divvy up the continent. North America is host to several nations. *Canada* still belongs to the Celtic nation, but the eastern seaboard is all independent post-colonial states. We have *France* in *the Maritimes* and the OTL Pennsylvania/Delaware area, the Saxon Confederation controled *New England* and *the deep south*, *Portugal* had the Mid-Atlantic, and the northern France German state still controls its little slice in the middle of it all. Out west the nations are mostly "trekker" states, except for the big native confederation in the plains (and the native state west of the Appalachians). Leyguria, of course, still rules Central America pretty strongly, but in the northwest we see the Chinese have expanded into *Alaska* and the rest is a big Norse state (probably more Metis than Norse, though).
As a creative choice I've decided to show disputed areas with diagonal lines rather than claims as it makes things clearer at a distance. So we can see in Karelia there's one small area disputed between Norway and Finnmark, and then the rest disputed by Norway, Finnmark, and whatever Slavic state that is.
Africa is also done, though I'm contemplating just filling it in and setting the map-date a bit later. I'm also not entirely happy with the state I have in the Ukraine and Crimea - I might break that one apart. Then it's just a matter of refining a few things, drawing boxes around the various misc. islands, and adding a key.

It looks much better than the old version. What's that dark area surrounding the small cluster of cities in the northeast?
