Map of the Fortnight: Main Discussion Thread

Good timing on my part, then! Heh, took way too long to make that map. Tried to much the style of late-18th century writing (i.e., capitalize Anything and forget about Correct Spelling because Webster's yet to have Written Anything Down yet)

Yes! I've been wanted to do a one-shot of this forever, now I can give myself a good reason to push it up.

*Edit* - Is there any chance we can use an earlier POD? I have a great idea for a map, but it would require a 1840's POD.

Your link takes me to MotF 184 - might need changing.

Good catch - should be fixed now!

The idea is for it to recognizably be the CSA of our history, so I was thinking the POD would need to be after Lincoln's election and the first states seceeding to ensure that. What did you have in mind?

My idea was the all Mexico-movement passes, but that increases most kinds of political instability, leading to a more successful CSA. I was looking for a realisttic way for the CSA to become the most powerful nation in North America.

Yeah, I think that falls outside the scope of this one, unfortunately.

Make a map depicting the outcome of a socialist or communist revolution in an independent CSA. POD must be between 1860 and 1865.

Does the revolution have to be successful?
I assume a couple of communist uprisings doesn't count as a revolution, so what marks the line between revolt and revolution?

Or what about a communist revolution followed by a counter-revolution?

Round 184 is now closed - thank you to all who entered!

Any of those are fine - the revolution doesn't have to be successful, and can be as small as a single city. Showing longer-term effects is also within the scope.

Congratulations to @Iserlohn for winning MotF 184 with his map, "Central America, South America, and the Caribbean - Political Map (1979)!"

Anyone have a map in progress yet for 185?

I have. Not to spoil the surprise, but the map will be focusing on the most radical state in the the former Confederacy. The Florida coastline always puts me off of doing maps of the South, but I'm going to have to do it twice for this map. Hopefully it won't put me off of finishing this one.

Maybe I'll have to change my plan if you're also doing a bat-shit Florida

Florida's not the focus of my map, so don't feel the need to change on my account. I'm not familiar enough with Florida's history outside of the panhandle or the history of communism in the state to focus on it.

I have two ideas:
  1. Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down: Make a map of the world that has gone straight to hell with civil wars, conflicts between nations, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and revolutions across every part of the world are happening all at once.
  2. I Have Become Death, The Destroyer of Worlds: Show a map of a nation that is armed with nuclear weapons and/or other WMDs.

I want to nominate these two.

If we are nominating ideas, I have a few for the next round. I suspect one or two of these might have been used before, but anyway:
(Titles shamelessly stolen from the Australian national anthem, which is where I got the ideas)

  1. Girt by Sea: Make a map of an island nation.
  2. Abounds in Nature's Gifts: Make a map of a country especially rich in a particular natural resource.
  3. Renowned of All the Lands: Make a map of a nation that is generally well-regarded by others.
  4. For Those Who've Come Across the Seas: Make a map of a nation or region with high levels of immigration.

Here's a proposal I thought of:
I don't have a cool name: Make a map of a nation which has many, many irredentist claims.

Examples include pre-WW1 Italy and the Megali Idea.
