Heh, maybe saying it was possible was wishful thinking. If it helps, when I was making the map, I originally wanted it to be a Byzantine Empire which "did all the right things" to survive, and managed to live on, conquering Italy and Spain. France, though, was a bridge too far even for a near perfect Byzantine expansion. That explains why Britain exists in the map- by the time Western Rome fell, Britain had an identity, and arguably was quite unified in some ways culturally, so they would exist in the Byzantine ATL.
I'll list a few points that I'd like to resolve before trying to remake the map. Let's assume I just try the Byzantine divergence, rather than Western Rome surviving.
1) I admit the China expansion is a bit haphazard as well, but perhaps increased competition from a strong, united Southern Europe led to a Chinese push to colonize some areas. The lack of Russia might have allowed for that type of movement into Siberia as well. I don't know what to do with Siberia if Russia's not in the picture.
2) As for the names of the names of the countries, I honestly don't know what everything would be called in TTL, so I just kept the OTL name. Maybe Patagonia should be "Mapuche Confederacy" or something. I don't know who America would be named after- maybe Augustus Caesar?
3) Would it make more sense if that country in Eastern Europe was perhaps Denmark instead of Poland? Scandinavia being ruled by Poland is a bit strange, anyway. However, if the divergence is much later, like in the 900s or so... maybe Poland could exist?
4) What if Germany had eventually been conquered by Rome, and then rebelled as an independent confederacy years down the road?
5) I'm not sure about Mongolia. The divergence there was supposed to be Novgorod defeating Muscovy, and then immediately getting annexed by "Poland". The Mongols would just settle wherever Russia was originally going to colonize, but wouldn't actually move into Siberia with it being so desolate. Then again... why would China directly annex it?
6) I was thinking that if Persia stood strong as an independent state, with Islam possibly being butterflied with the survival of Rome with an early enough divergence, perhaps the Turks would have tried to conquer India instead of attacking a strong Persian Empire which they couldn't hope to defeat in the field. Then, over time, that state opens up a bit, and becomes more of a representative state over time.
I'm going to try and redo the map a bit more realistically by next week. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
