Air and Space Photos from Alternate Worlds.

I have never seen this version, but I have found this.

One has to wonder whether the separation of the cockpit into its own aircraft could be carried out safely under physically stressful conditions (during reentry, or a failed take-off and such). I find that expectation a bit dubious or overly optimistic.

I'm digging the wingtip rudders. This particular STS derivative/evolution feels like it was designed by Gerry Anderson. :)

Well, it was an abort option. Had to be better than RTLS or a ditching.

How Many!

With two male astronauts - both, amongst peers, known for being capable drinkers, ARES took more than 400 servings of beer on her interplanetary journey. Budweiser supplied half of them, while Samuel Adams, the favourite of the Mission Commander, supplied the rest.

Belated cross-post from the excellent Ocean of Storms timeline (if you haven't checked it out already, I highly recommend you do so!). This is Apollo 14, a month-long lunar mapping mission in which the CSM Endurance used the Farsight telescope to map out potential future landing sites. Farsight is in fact a camera from a KH-7 spysat, based on the real Apollo LM&SS proposal. Attached to the far end is Gossip, a small relay satellite that Endurance will release into an elliptical lunar orbit at the end of its mission, from where it will relay signals from future farside landing missions.

so twice as long as any otl apollo mission, good lord imagine how smelly that capsule will be after a month.

With Congressional funding for the Ares Program appropriated, activity began in earnest. And first was the construction of a new launch pad. Launch Complex 39C had originally been planned in the heady days of the early 60s but not built as the nations space effort slowed. But now with the commitment to a manned landing on Mars and the increased tempo of flights required to test spacecraft, boosters and procedures, as well as building the great Mars ship, an additional launch pad was required.

This picture shows Artemis 3 - the return to the Moon. A modified Mars Excursion Module (MEM) had already been placed into lunar orbit and the Saturn V boosted three crew to the moon just like Apollo missions before the command and service module rendezvoused with the MEM. After powering up the lander, the three crew touched down near Tycho crater, spending 30 days not only exploring the Moon but also testing equipment to be used on the Martian surface.

Returning to Earth, they reentered Earth's atmosphere on the same day as another manned mission. Skylab 82-C splashed down in the balmy Pacific less than two hours after Artemis 3. The size of the recovery flotilla (which included the new super carrier USS Carl Vinson) and the subsequent House Committee investigation makes it a feat that is unlikely to be repeated.

Astronaut Anna Fisher, the first American woman in space, is suited up before neutral buoyancy training. Launched aboard Skylab 82-A alongside veteran astronauts Mission Commander Jack Lousma and Flight Engineer Bruce McCandless, she was aboard Skylab for almost 160 days.

She later flew Skylab 85-B and 88-A, racking up a total of 400 days in space. She took a leave of absence from the Astronaut Corps in 1988 to raise a family - although at that point she was slated to fly as Mission Specialist on Ares III. On her return in 1992 she served in the Operations Planning Branch, representing Astronauts in the development of Space Station Olympus.

Which flight simulator is that?

Another image from the dogfight above the Magong Island airfield, displaying another ROCAF victory from sortie over a PLAAF MiG-15 . Early in the campaign, the PLA amphibious invasion was able to seize the Penghu Archipelago and base ground attack and interceptor aircraft out of the main airfield, from which to threaten the southwestern coast of Formosa proper.
