Hail, Britannia

I wanted to say that this is an amazing thread. I am very curious about the republican parts of South America (Chile, Colombia-New Grenada and Venezuela pre and post-coup)

What about the current sexual harassment scandal, how does it affect this TL?
Well...

- Roy Moore, the leader of Alabama's Southern Heritage party, and a prospective candidate for the Carolina House of Burgesses, has been accused of molesting women when they were teenagers. A report has also emerged that Moore was banned from a local shopping mall in his home state of Alabama because of his badgering of teenage girls. Moore has denied the allegations, and in a statement called them "completely false" and "a desperate political attack by the opposition parties".

And as for John Conyers, my guess is that he's a SDP politician from the Ohio Country and likely the Father of the House. So yeah, that probably will be major.

@LeinadB93 , This series of your's is absolutely fantastic! I have been following it as a Lurker since it started.
However, could I request that you could do the Westralian Election, and a list of Australian Premiers please?

Oh God, can one of us run a Harry Potter update past the OP to see if they like it? I'm very, very interested in how that story would have gone in this UK.

Voldemort a terror across the world...

Hogwarts drawing students from across Britannia...

Quidditch in all the home countries! :D

Hogwarts merely being the magical version of Eton, rather than being the only wizarding school in THE ENTIRE BRITISH ISLES! ;)

@LeinadB93 I know that this may be a bit crazy but for your next news update include something about deadmau5.

No.

I've tried to be polite about this, hoping you would take the hint.

You seem to have an obsession with forcing deadmau5 into this timeline, for reasons I can't comprehend. I won't be incorporating him into any news updates as I can't see any difference from OTL, and it won't, in my opinion, add anything to this timeline.

If we delve into music, I'd be happy to help out with the history of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Band.

Like I've mentioned before music and pop culture isn't my strong point, so it would be interesting to see what you come up with :)

Thanks :)

Chile, having been thrashed as part of the Central Powers during the First World War, is generally much as OTL, but a bit richer, more democratic and better developed. It's probably the South American equivalent of Austria. Venezuela is much as OTL, with the exception that it remains part of New Granada until the 1860s.

New Granada still includes Panama, but the San Andres y Providencia islands are part of British Jamaica. Simon Bolivar pulls a Napoleon in South America, sometime in the late 1810s/early 1820s, and succeeds in establishing a "Granadine Empire" across much of modern New Granada, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. Britain steps in to sort things out, with the support of the Latin American monarchies and by the late 1820s is forced to accept a reduced empire. The Bolivarian Wars last from 1822 to about 1827, and end with Simon Bolivar ruling as Emperor over New Granada, Venezuela and Santo Domingo.

After Bolivar's death in 1830, the lack of an heir leads to the First Granadine War (1831-1833) which dissolves the empire and replaces it with the Granadine Confederation. The Second Granadine War, also known as the Granadine Civil War, lasts from 1860 to 1862 and ends after a British intervention, and the independence of Venezuela and Santo Domingo. This leads to the nation being closely tied to the British Empire, politically and economically, and Britain builds TTLs Panama Canal whilst France/Mexico build the Nicaragua Canal. New Granada is still in the grips of a drug war, and I've alluded to a Granadine Crisis in the late 1960s through to the early 1980s.

Politically, New Granada is a parliamentary republic much like OTL South Africa, with a President as head of state and government but who is elected from the country's legislature.

Yeah that's something I need to cover in more depth... I'll put something into tonight's news bulletin about it.

Yeah John Conyers would definitely be a high ranking figure in the Imperial Parliament.

Why thank you :D glad you're enjoying it!!

All are in the works, so all in good time :)

Whats the education system in the empire like?

Well @CanadianTory and I had discussed this briefly, as both of us are involved in education on either side of the pond. This is what we came up with:

LeinadB93 said:
Well I'm just thinking about the education system looks in the U.K.E. Basically thinking that pre-1976 it's very much in the hands of the dominions. Trudeau decides to centralise things abit, and sets up the Department for Education with a focus on setting minimum standards.

At the moment my idea for ages (using British naming):
  • 1-4 yo - not compulsory, optional "Early Years/Nursery"
  • 4-5 yo - "Reception"
  • 5-7 yo - "Infants"
    • 5-6 - Year 1/Kindergarten
    • 6-7 - Year 2/1st Grade
  • 7-11 yo - "Primary"
    • 7-8 - Year 3/2nd Grade
    • 8-9 - Year 4/3rd Grade
    • 9-10 - Year 5/4th Grade
    • 10-11 - Year 6/5th Grade
  • 11-14 yo - "Middle School" [Often merged with High School]
    • 11-12 - Year 7/6th Grade
    • 12-13 - Year 8/7th Grade
    • 13-14 - Year 9/8th Grade
  • 14-18 yo - "High School" [Often merged with Middle School]
    • 14-15 - Year 10/9th Grade
    • 15-16 - Year 11/10th Grade
    • 16-17 - Year 12/11th Grade
    • 17-18 - Year 13/12th Grade
Some basic points:
  1. Education is compulsory until 18. You sit three sets of exams, one at the end of "Primary", the other at the end of Year 11/10th Grade and the other at the end of Year 13/12th Grade.
  2. You don't graduate until Year 13/12th Grade, although you can study more practical/apprentice subjects and courses.
  3. The curriculum is meant to be balanced across all subjects, so everyone does a bit of Maths, English, Science, History, Art, Music, Geography, Politics etc. You can specialise a bit in High School but it is expected that everyone knows a bit about everything.
  4. Everyone studies a language that isn't their own i.e. English, French, Dutch, Gaelic, Spanish or Russian. These are offered at the discretion of the dominion government, with non-Anglophone dominions offering English, whilst others offer either their other language(s) or most commonly French.
  5. After graduation you go onto University/College or apprenticeships. But many will also study skilled trades in Year 12-13/11th-12th grade, e.g. plumber, electrician, mechanic etc.

but even so, an idea of seeing a harry potter story ambrangendo a much bigger area would still be awesome!

Sure @Wribro go for it :)

I like the idea of there being like an individual magic school for various regions, whereas Hogwarts is like the "best of the best" or "richest of the rich" school for magical kids.

An independent minded British American Magical Congress based in Fredericksburg (OTL Washington D.C.) might also be interesting...

My opinion: @ST15RM is deadmau5
