ok, i had an idea...inspired from CGP Grey, for those who don't know him, look him up on YT.
what if, every state flag was given this template:
upload_2017-6-12_7-37-41.png

and said "ok, you can do what ever you want to the white field, just dont change the blue banner and the star, ok? ok"
i made a large portion (alphabetical from Alabama-Iowa) and i will post them once i get home (around 3 EST).
hopefully this doesn't blow up in my face
(PS: Blue is Old Glory Blue which the rgb code is 0 40 104)

Cross post for the latest challenge.
I'm not totally happy with the firesteels but wanted them as unalike OTL Serbian or Byzantine ones as possible.
The United Kingdom of Bulgaria and Serbia

Brief History

The United Kingdom has its roots in the Great War where the Hungarian Empire had coopted Slavic nationalism in its Serbian and Bulgarian provinces in order to destabilise the Slavic provinces within the Turkish Empire. With the defeat of the Turks but the collapse of Hungary the Western Allies obtained the creation of the Kingdoms of Serbia and of Bulgaria as buffer states.
Both Kingdoms survived the Socialist Wars by embracing South-Slavic Nationalism, and thus a closer alliance, becoming founder members of the Yugoslav Confederation in opposition to the Socialist Codominion [of Ardelia, Hungary, and Wallachia].
The withdrawal of Illyria and the Serbian Succession Crisis almost broke the Confederation however Prince Milutin of Macedonia popularised public opinion to continue further political union and the resultant Referendum for a Complete Union was comfortably won by the unionists; thereafter King Boris II of Bulgaria accepted the title of Tsar of Yugoslavia.

Flag

The original Confederal flag was a triband of the 3 founders:
  • Illyria - white 6pt star on red
  • Serbia - blue cross and firesteels on white
  • Bulgaria - red cross on white bordered in red with gold roundels
The UK flag merges elements from both the Serbian and Bulgarian flags in a new way.
It is a blue cross edged in white over a red field; each corner bears a golden firesteel; over the centre is a circular version of the Tsar's (new) simple arms - a black cross pattee on gold bordered in black with 12 golden roundels.

here's the next three flags:

the 54-star flag from 1912. this was one of the last ones i made. i forget exactly what my process was, but i think i was kinda going for an Eye of Sauron thing :p ignoring the "chevrons" at the top and bottom and the two stars off to the sides, it also kinda looks like a TIE fighter XD
Flag - USNA 1912 (54 stars).png

the 56-star flag from 1917. i didn't get as creative with this one, but it does involve tilted stars. i'd kinda been wanting to make one where there were at least two diagonal lines coming from opposite corners--i just like how those look on wider square fields
Flag - USNA 1917 (56 stars).png

and the 59-star flag from 1945. there's no 57- or 58-star flag because the Philippines were ratified all at once as three different states (Luzon, Mindanao, and Visaya), so that's pointed out as a historical factoid in-universe (like an elementary school history book would have a little bit off to one said that says "Did You Know?: There was never a 57th and 58th state--they skipped straight to 59!" or something). not much to say on the design.
Flag - USNA 1945 (57-59 stars).png

the next three, which i'll upload tomorrow, have much more creative fields ;)

My redesign of the county flags of Liberia. Note I also used an alternate flag for Liberia itself, which is based on a real life proposal.

I tried to have the same symbolism as teh original flags ... if they had any symbolism.

What's with the beehive anyway? Is Margibi a producer of honey or are they largely Mormon?

here's the next three flags of my USNA state ratification series

this is the 60-star flag from 1952. after i got the idea for the Nordic cross arrangement of stars, i decided to base another one on the flag of the Byzantine Empire--you'll notice that the field of stars is divided roughly into quarters with the stars forming a cross in each one being tilted one way or another to sort-of reflect the Byzantine flag without adding any new symbols or colors to it
Flag - USNA 1952 (60 stars).png

this 61-star flag from 1959 started life as a reference to Masonic conspiracies with two intersecting chevrons and a star in the middle like the Square and Compasses, but there weren't enough stars, so i added some hooks to the ends of the chevrons, two more curved wedges at the top and bottom along each chevron, and a few others. it ended up looking kinda like Vaatu from The Legend of Korra (or Raava, if you prefer) :p
Flag - USNA 1959 (61 stars).png

and the 62-star flag, also from 1959. i forget exactly what my process was, but it ended up looking kinda like either a mask or an owl :p

two more to go ;)

i can't believe i forgot to post the rest of my flags! these ones are much more mundane-looking

63-stars, from 1970

64-stars, from 1975
