447px-Rockwell-Norman-LOC.jpg

Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was an American painter and illustrator, whose artwork is regarded to be the most notable example of American Socialist Realism. His work was widely promoted and praised by the Communist regime for "truthfully depicting the American way of life, celebrating the achievements of the American people, uncovering and condemning racism and other social ills". For that, Rockwell was awarded the title of "People's Artist of America" in 1939 and the Order of Eugene Debs in 1950, among other decorations. He was also known for his posters for the United Scout Movement of America and illustrations for the Scout magazine "Spark" (formerly "Boy's Life")

After the fall of the Communist regime in 1993, Rockwell was posthumously derided for his supposed loyalty to the Communists and his support for the Revolution of 1933; his work was labelled kitsch agitprop and was swiftly removed from art museums. The same fate befell other American Socialist Realists, who were discarded in favour of artists previously condemned by state art critics, such as John Singer Sargent, the "pet painter of the royalty and the bourgeoisie". Nevertheless, the rediscovery of Rockwell's apolitical works in the late 2000s brought back some public interest. Furthermore, uncovered private correspondence and diaries revealed he was secretly opposed to the government's rampant authoritarianism and rewriting of history.

Senate Majority Leader John B. Connally Jr. (DEM-TX), Congressman Robert J. Dole (CON-KS), and President George H.W. Bush (WIG-CT) participate in the first debate in the 1980 presidential election. Bush is hoping to get the Whigs a third term in the White House, but Connally is giving a tough challenge to the President. Pre-debate polling shows Bush at 47%, Connally at 45%, with Dole of the Constitution Party at 8% (polls do not include Bernard Sanders of the Vermont Independence Party who is running solely in the state).

NBC News' Richard Nixon greets the three presidential candidates during the only 1976 United States presidential debate. From left, United Auto Workers President George W. Romney of the Socialist Party, retired Army General Robert J. Dole running as an independent (with the endorsements of many smaller political parties), and seven-term President J. Strom Thurmond of the Patriot Party. Thurmond's administration has faced numerous claims of human-rights abuses, with many independent observers believing the administration has manipulated previous elections. Romney is running on a left-wing platform, supporting the abolishment of segregation and a "Fair Society." Dole is attempting to attract previous Thurmond voters on a moderate platform, opposing full integration and supporting a strong international presence. President Thurmond is speaking for a continuation of the status quo that first gave him the White House in 1948. Despite stronger opposition, Thurmond is expected to win an easy victory.
