Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

So... How about a new challenge? ;)

Since you asked so nicely :p

FLAG CHALLENGE #161: LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FANTASTIQUE!

Many amazing fantasy worlds have been crafted by authors and creators throughout the ages. Narnia, Middle Earth, Alagaësia, Thedas, Wonderland, Tamriel, Pern, Westeros, Azeroth, etc. In almost all of these, there exist monarchies and empires due to the medieval nature of their societies. But technology and thought are ever moving, even if magic exists to synthesize with it. One day people will question the status quo. One day people in these worlds will develop notions of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Ideologies, from Communism to Liberalism to Fascism, and many we have no actual equivalent of, will come to exist eventually. And so one day a revolution will come.

Your challenge is to take an established fantasy world from a well-known work of fiction and create the flag of a revolutionary state in that world. A socialist uprising, a break-away democratic state, a dictatorship that favors the guillotine, any kind of revolution will do!

@Xanthoc That is an exotic challenge to say the least
A question though. Do fictive worlds from video games are also allowed? E.G. Skyrim?
Video games are a work of fiction... I think. I'm pretty sure the events of the Elder Scrolls aren't historical, at least.

You'll notice I actually listed Tamriel (setting of Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls), as well as Thedas, setting of the Dragon Age series. Any well-known fantasy world, be it from a book, a game, or a film is allowed.

I also know "well-known" is a bit subjective, so I'll give a general rule of thumb: If you did a poll of 1,000 random people, at least 1 person in that sample should know about it.

The Federal Democratic Republic of Breland

In the millennial of Lazaar's discovery of Khorvaire, four years after the Treaty of Thronehold, the continent was once more rocked by strife. The popular King Boranel ir'Wyrnan of Breland died suddenly in his sleep on the fourth of Zharantyr, apparently leaving the throne to Kor ir'Wyrnan, his younger brother. Kor, a capable administrator but poor politician, was in Sharn when King died, but while he was rushing to Wroat for the transfer of power, a special session of parliament was called. Prime Minister Ruken ir'Clarn, in a landmark 12 hour session of both houses of Parliament, pushed through Judicial Act 412B, stripping the Brelish monarch of the power to appoint judges, vesting it in, of course, the Prime Minister.

Kor, eager to assert his power as king, and not trusting the Prime Minister's motives, took action immediately upon entering Wroat. He filed two suits, one claiming that 412B was unconstitutional and another against Clarn personally. Then, he dissolved Parliament and called for elections.

The Trolanport Stock Market fell three points overnight, and by the end of the week markets as far afield as Stormreach and the Mror Holds were hurting. The economic crisis, caused by structural instabilities in the postwar economy and the growing competition between the Aberrant Marked and the Houses, had seemed to it its nadir with the Cannith South Affair on 999, in which House Cannith, the premier manufacturing entity on Khorvaire, actually dissolved into three separate houses. Seemed is the key word here.

Risia, the plane of endless ice, was coterminous in 1000, so normally chilly Zharantyr was freezing. The Howling River around Brokenblade Castle was frozen solid, but while the air was cold the mood was growing hotter and hotter. Despite the best efforts of the Citadel, armed bands had begun to organize, being either for or against Judicial Act 412B. Wearing either the green armband of the loyalists or the cerulean of the Republicans, militias began clashing in the streets of Sharn and Wroat.

In this milieu of political conflict and economic malaise, the crowning of Kor was a subdued affair. Security was tight, grim-faced Dark Lanterns (Breland's police-spies) haunting the corners of what seemed to be every street. While Kor was being crowned, Clarn was in the empty parliament hall, pontificating to a Sivis reporter. His Private Speech appeared that evening in the Sharn Inquisitive, a popular, republican-leaning newspaper. Clarn denounced the tyranny of the King's actions in apologetic terms, blaming not Kor but the monarchical position itself.

The next day, the King held a press conference to address concerns regarding his relationship with the Prime Minister, but alas, the event only caused more conflict.

That is to say, it was bombed.

Kor, Three, his bodyguard, as well as representatives of five newspapers and a number of bystanders, were killed in the blast. The next in to the throne was Princess Talari, who was in Karrnath, a continent away.

The Dark Lanterns, sworn to protect Breland's monarchy, moved swiftly against the ostensible perpetrators of the assassination, the anti-monarchist insurgency the Swords of Liberty. They arrested the Prime Minister, along with Shiana, a republican and Wroat's Minister for Parliament, and postponed the elections. Riots broke out in Wroat and Sharn, devolving swiftly into street warfare between the Dark Lanterns and the Swords of Liberty. Sharn's city council quickly acceded to the Swords' demands, and refused to recognized the imprisonment of Ruken, even as rioters crossed the frozen Howling River and stormed Brokenblade Castle. Ruken had been executed, but Shiana was alive and freed from prison. Barefoot and half-naked in the icy courtyard of the castle, surrounded by a shouting crowd, Shiana proclaimed a New Breland, one of the people, by the people, and for the people. The oppression of the Citadel and the Dark Lanterns needed to end, as did the poverty, crime and racial tension that she blamed on the monarchy. She offered devolution to the goblinoids in the east and south, special administrative rights to Sharn and the New Cyran refugee camps and to open diplomatic relations with Droaam, which the Brelish monarchy had considered part of its patrimony.

The Federal Democratic Republic of Breland adopted as its coat of arms the traditional Brelish red shield with three crossed implements on it. The crossed Axe and Scythe had been used by Breland before, but a long hammer was added to represent the working people in addition to the army and the peasantry. The banners read F.D.R.B., Liberty and Justice, and Freedom (from top to bottom). The three stars represented the principles of Liberty, Justice and Freedom. Most notable is the blue banner - a plain blue banner was the symbol of Brelish republicanism and the Swords of Liberty, it signaled the intent of the new nation to spread its principles to the world, by the sword if necessary.

For FLAG CHALLENGE #161: LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FANTASTIQUE!

In 1970 Fourth Age, during the reign of Elessar IV, house of Telcontar, there arose a movement in the great harbours of Umbar and Pelargir. Dockworkers, angry at the new machines that Lords residing in Minas Anor and Annúminas had begun building to unload the ships returning from the Far East and South began proclaiming that they and their brothers in the textile mills were not getting their fair wages and that the Lords upriver had become corrupt. "Look at their rings!" they cried. "They use rings to identify themselves and we know what comes of rings!" The first riots were brutally put down by the soldiers of the King, but the movement which became known as "Mudanaerthas" only spread with the creation of martyrs for the cause. The riots continued off and on for decades with popular support growing slowly, though the true measure of its spread is said to be when Bodo Brandybuck, Thain of the Shire and member of King's cabinet, was overheard to remark "Well, they are hard workers, I'll given them that, and they're only look for fair wages and six square meals a day."

The workers finally revolted on 7 Ivanneth 2023 Fourth Age, realising that they now controlled the machinery of the factories that supplied the army and in the ensuing two weeks before the proclamation of Gondorian People's Republic many regiments of the south, composed of Haradrim and the sons of the Dunlendings who had migrated south looking for work switched their allegiances to the Mudanaethas. Even the Prince of Dol Amroth threw in with the revolution.

Today, the provinces of the Republic include Belfalas, South Lebennin, Ethir Anduin, South Gondor and Near Harad with sympathetic governments in Núrn and in New Nargothrond to the west of Rhovanion.

The flag consists of the sickle of the workers crossed with the White Tree as symbol of freedom from oppression both in legends of the past and today, with an outline of red symbolizing the blood of the martyrs to the cause,. Black and white are the traditional colours of the Arms of Telcontar in hope that freedom can be brought to all the people of Arnor and Gondor.

For FLAG CHALLENGE #161: LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FANTASTIQUE!

Following the utter failure and defeat of Voldemorts army at the Second Battle of Hogwarts the Ministry of Magic cracked down on pure blood families with any sort of tie towards Voldemort or the Death Eaters. Families such as the Lestrange, Malfoys and Carrows were forced to give up large sums of money and land among other things as subsidies for the damage caused during the war. As the grip of the Ministry tightened around these proud families tension and hate grew once more.

An increase of muggle borns entering the Wizarding World of Britain over the decades following the War had seen a large shift in the magical community's demographic which caused mild panic from older wizarding families. As the numbers rose so did the number of muggles who were aware and dabbling in Wizarding affairs. With the ever increasing number of non-magical-persons aware of the magical world, rumours started to spread about its existence. With the rise of the internet, it was hard for the Ministry of Magic to keep the Muggles in check and soon the existence of Magic was well known to the Muggles of Britain.

With this grew Wizardkind's fear of muggles and a far-right movement grew parallel to these fears. The movement, dubbed The Brotherhood of Merlin gained widespread popularity throughout Britain in the 2040's for its hard stance of muggle-integration, economic policies and heavily advocating Wizarding history and culture and it's superiority. The movement gained such a traction in 2043 that Mordred Yaxley became the Minister of Magic.

With Mordred's swift positioning as Minister of Magic, there was an obvious authoritarian change in governance. Elections were cancelled and high governmental positions such as Head of Magical Law Enforcement were only given to members of the Brotherhood or those connected to the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Political movements and parties were banned from forming and collecting and all forms of media were now under state control. Most notable are their race policies; muggleborns have been banned from attending Hogwarts and have had theirs wands removed and memories wiped or executed (depending on the sentence handed to them), half-blood's are only able to obtain certain jobs in the Wizarding World and all Wizards and Witches must carry identification and blood documents at all time.

The Brotherhood of Merlin's banner depicts Wizarding heritage at its best. The two wands are both images of the Elder Wand, a symbol of strength of wizarding might. The two wands are crossed to show the willingness for the Brotherhood to fight and the duality of them conveys solidarity and unity among Wizards. The six stars represent the important ideology the Brotherhood hold; wisdom, history, purity, comradery, strength and culture. The words inscribed at the bottom translate to 'Purity Above All.'

People's Republic of Lankhmar

The hand of the Grand Prince of Ilthmar & Lankhmar had grown heavy and the people chafed.
All across the Eightfold Land [1] vandals and saboteurs signed their work with the red banner of radical socialism or the Eye of Public Oversight [2].
In old Lankhmar, most ancient of cities, adherents to the Movement of Public Oversight would often add a golden haloed sun in reference to their city's traditional icon of the white sun.
The Massacre of Fafhrd's Tor ignited revolutions and within the year the so-called Empire of the Eightfold Land had fallen to an alliance of People's Republics.
The People's Republic of Lankhmar displayed a flag with a red hoist on a black field surmounted by a golden haloed white sun - red & gold for the People, white sun on black for Lankhmar [3] - and bearing a green eye - for the fruitfulness of Public Oversight.

[1] Derived from the Land of Eight Cities and now referring to the lands surrounding the Inner Sea of Nehwon under control of the Grand Prince of Ilthmar and Lankhmar.
[2] A movement calling itself "public oversight" would undoubtedly use eye symbolism.
[3] With black being the traditional colour of Lankhmar a white symbol would help show the "venerability" of the later hereditary princes.

Long after the explosion of Red Mountain, Vvardenfell eventually became more hospitable again. Dark elves all around Tamriel had been experiencing a large diaspora, because of this a movement among the dark elves to return to their homeland grew. At first, the immigration of dark elves was small and unimportant. But as time went on stories of successful immigrants spread the amount of immigrants increased. Problems began in the south as that area was the most hospitable and controlled by Black Marsh. The result was a massive conflict between the dark elves and argonians. In the end, the dark elves manged to gain control of all of the island. After fighting for control of all of Vvardenfell, the dark elves felt a wave of patriotism and chose to form their own country. With no real organized government the dark elves turned to their past to construct one. They turned in particular to time of Nerevarine, but since there was no one was able to claim the titles ashkhan or hortator the council would rule without a single leader in the form of a republic. Th symbol of the moon-and-star is the symbol of the Nerevarine and represents the united peoples of the dunmer, while the letters surrounding it represent the three "good daedra" in dark elf tradition: Azura, Mephala, and Boethia, who all guide the dark elves in the times to come.

(If the image of the countries name in daedric breaks a rule of only having one image or something just let me know and I will remove it.)

Commonwealth of Six Duchies

The Six Duchies Civil War had its roots in the disastrous Red Ships War more than a hundred years before. The split between the Coastal and Inland Duchies was as good as gone, with the duchies of Tilth and Farrow eager to prove their solidarity with the other four. The comparatively weak rule of King Dutiful allowed the Council of Dukes grow in power. Initially just a meeting of the Six Dukes, the political wrangling soon saw the inclusion of minor nobles as well.

The tragic death of King Valiant in a hunting accident led to the Council of Nobles reigning almost two decades in the name of his infant son, King Grace. This gave the Council a taste of power that they would never forget and they made sure that from there onwards, at least the power of taxation, but also more and other acts of legislation could only be passed with the consent of the Council.

During the reign of King Renown, the Council became split between the Nobles and the Knights, as the latter more and more frequently sided with the common people. The split was finalized during the Chalched War and from there on the two councils would meet separately as Grand Councils. By then, it was a well-established custom that no law could be made without the agreement of both Councils and the King.

It was widely known that King Renown disliked the arrangement that the Grand Councils had grown into and he instilled this feeling in his son, the eventual King Defiant. So in retrospect, it was only a matter of time until King Defiant dissolved the Grand Councils and attempted to rule solely by Royal Proclamations.

Unfortunately, he had gravely misjudged his position. Although the control of the army allowed him to win a number of early victories, he soon ran out of money, as the matters of taxation had almost completely passed to the Councils. In less than a year, a good number of the Royal Army had deserted and the Councils had raised enough forces to mount a counteroffensive. With the Army of the Councils bearing down on Buckkeep, King Defiant finally decided to flee to the Outer Islands and leave his kingdom to the Councils.

The flag of the Commonwealth, first flown by the Army of the Councils to separate them from the Royal Army bearing the Royal Standard is based on the colors and geography of the Six Duchies. The four stripes stand for the Coastal Duchies and their respective colors: yellow for Bearns, blue for Buck, green for Rippon and red for Shoaks. Two triangles at the hoist stand for the Inland Duchies and their colors: purple for Tilth and gold for Farrow.
