Republic of Czechomoravia

Following the disintegration of the 3rd Reich, the protectorate of Bohemia-Moravia, following a short civil war, was taken over by a coalition of Left leaning groups and was turned into the Republic of Czechomoravia. To road to democracy was long.

The Kalimantan Republic occupies the entire island of Borneo and some nearby areas and is one of more than a half dozen states in Southeast Asia and the surounding islands granted independence by the Empire of Japan (which kept several choice bits for itself) after the long military occupation. The Kalimantan government is on a short leash with regard to its foreign policy by reason of both the huge Japanese military base situated within a days' tank ride of the capital city and of course the risk of economic dislocation that would result from the disruption of trade with Japan and the other members of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. The flag shows the obvious influence of the flags of the Imperial Navy and Army, as well reflecting the traditional flags of the area, both by the use of a crescent and star and by its employment of black and yellow.

Greater Federal Empire of Japan-大日本連邦帝国

In the early period during the Glacier War (TTL's equivalent of the Cold War) between ATA (American Treaty Alliance) and the Axis powers after WWII, Japan and Germany were close allies in competition against the United States, often exchanging materials and weaponry to each other to keep themselves over the edge against ATA in terms of military power. However the death of Adolf Hitler in 1951 along with the accession of Albert Speer and his like minded successor (who had different ideas about dealing with ATA in a "peaceful" fashion)would sow the seeds for the German-Japanese split of the 1960's, of which the Siberian border conflicts between the Germans and the Japanese had almost sparked WWIII between the two countries. In the 1970's, the leadership of Japan, the Taisei Yokusankai, realized that it needs to pursue a positive relationship with the USA to counterbalance that of Germany, yet it needs to reform itself to gain Washington DC's favor. Starting in the late 70's, the leadership began to focus on economic growth as well as giving "political freedom" in the 1980's, though Japan still maintains an authoritarian grip on society, especially in Korea, China, and the former Russian Far East. By the 1990's, the Empire of Japan changed its name to the Federal Empire of Japan as well as changing its flag to reflect its "reformed" status. The big "circle" represents Japan's influence on land (green) and sea (blue), while the red smaller circle within represents the Japanese people and having rays stick out to represent its imperial status. The yellow cherry blossom represents good luck and prosperity for the nation both in the present and in the future.

can I recommend you put a thin outline (1 pixel) around your image. makes flags with plain white field easier to appreciate in my view when displayed on a pale grey background.

I concur! Either not part of the flag or one that is part of the flag. If I may make a suggestion, maybe the center piece could be a bit bigger?

Ask and ye shall receive as I have updated the flag to follow your suggestions as well as make it more visible.

Nationalist Estonian Republic. 1967-1998.
After the death of the Adolf Hitler on 21st of June, 1965, the Reich was shaken by civil wars caused by nations wanting independence. Such countries were the Baltic States. On 1st of February, Estonian Nationalists manisfest the first act of aggression on the German Occupation Forces stationed in the Baltics. The Estonians liberate, Lithuania, Latvia and parts of Poland and Belarus. On 5th of November 1967, the Treaty of Tallinn is signed, which made the newly formed nation be recognised by over 50 nations. While the Estonians wanted independence, they didn't abolish the nazi regime. Three decades later, diplomatic relationtions with the New Nordic Axis go sour, leading Finland to attack Estonia. The war was short with very few casualities. After the Finnish-Estonian war, Estonia was annexed.

New challenge!
FLAG CHALLENGE #153: No Gods, no Masters

Your challenge is to create the flag of a country/society that has embraced Anarchism or any of it's variants (or a similar ideology, e.g. libertarianism, syndicalism) as its main ideal. This should be highlighted in the design of the flag.

In the spirit of anarchism, there aren't any rules except:
  • Be original, don't just copypasta an 'A' symbol or a skull and crossbones onto an already-existing flag.
  • No futuristic/sci-fi stuff.
Go!

Free State of China (Anarcho-Communist Taiwan)
自由邦的中國 - Zìyóu bāng de zhōngguó
VAxxwFn.png

History is fragile: if you change even one little thing, things completely spiral away from what we're used to. For instance, what if the Chinese communists from OTL were driven away to Taiwan in some ATL like they did with the nationalists?

In this ATL, the socialist party in china overthrows the Celestial Throne and establishes the Chinese Free Union (OTL People's Republic of China). However, the union becomes corrupt over time, forcing small cracks in the system to split even futher. In other words, several right wing rebel factions group with the nationalist party to overthrow the socialist government, forcing them to retreat to Taiwan. Thanks to US intervention, mainland china becomes (in theory) a capitalist republic. Whether or not this would be true in practice would be hard to say. From what we've seen in OTL Russia, this republic would more than likely become corrupt over time as well.

Meanwhile in Taiwan, the socialists, communists and several anarchist groups form together to become stronger and eventually take over the island. Taiwan was now under a Anarcho-Communist regime. Presumably, the Free State will (like Taiwan in OTL) become a democratic nation through either slow reforms or sudden revolution. This is for a later story, though.

The FSC's flag features the colours of Anarcho-Communism: red, black and yellow. The black border signifies the clear divide of Taiwan from the rest of china and the world (ideology wise) while the yellow and black checkerboard on the left signifies the clear differences between the taiwanese people, e.g. natives and Chinese immigrants, and how they will live side by side in a nation without a leader. A beefed up version of the Kuomintang from OTL Taiwan's flag is present to the right with major differences, e.g. the black and red star and the black outlines. This is done in an effort to change the meaning of the Kuomintang to distance it from its Chinese nationalist roots (like what the Nazis did to the swastika by changing it from a symbol of peace into a symbol of hate). The black globe in the background highlights the efforts of anarchist rebels all over the world to spread their ideology to all nations (like OTL early USSR).

On an unrelated note, I wonder why a lot of my flags end up featuring red, yellow and/or black in some way? Maybe I just subconsciously like this colour scheme. Who knows?

Petrograd Commune
Петроградский коммуна

In TTL, the anarchist movement in Russia is both stronger and less naive about the Bolsheviks. As Bakunin before them, the various leaders of anarchist movement soundly reject Marxism as technocratic nonsense. Unlike in OTL, the Anarchists are concentrated mainly in St. Petersburg and hold a lot of sway with workers and soldiers, so that when Lenin arrives to renamed Petrograd in the April of 1917, he is met with indifference and hostility and is forced to continue to Moscow, the stronghold of Bolsheviks in TTL.

Later on, the July Days in 1917 grow under the banner of Anarchists from demonstrations into a full insurrection, overthrowing the Provisional Government. As the government forces flee the city, other revolutionary movements are given a choice: either join the Anarchist commune or be expelled from Petrograd. Most of the remaining SRs and Mensheviks choose to join, knowing that no welcome would await them in Bolshevik-controlled Moscow. They are proven right, as Lenin, fearing that the advantage is tilting towards Anarchists, orders night-time raids against all political opponents in Moscow. Newly formed Cheka carries out the raids with brutal efficiency, decimating Anarchists, SRs and Mensheviks still in Moscow. The stage is set for a three-way Civil War between Anarchists in Petrograd, Bolsheviks in Moscow and Monarchists in Omsk.

The flag of Petrograd Commune is designed after both the red banner of revolution and the influence of Paris Commune, a great inspiration for the anarchist movement in Petrograd. In the centre is a Cyrillic letter P (which stands for Petrograd, but also for Paris as the spiritual predecessor of Petrograd Commune). The letter is surrounded by a black rectangle, symbolizing the city of Petrograd.

The Free Society of the British Isles
Saor an-asgaidh Comann na h-Eileanan Breatannach
Cumann Saor na Oileáin na Breataine

The Invasion of Britain, or as it is more commonly known, Boney's Great Gambit, followed after the Russian Vanishing, in which the Russian Army and their Tzar were lost in an avalanche, and the Peace of Frankfurt, which essentially saw the Coalition abandon the United Kingdom, allowing Caesar Napoleon I to move on towards militarily destroying the British. His invasion was to be two pronged, with a large coalitioned force set to take Ireland, while a second force would swing around the Emerald Isle to to perform a surprise strike at England. Napoleon was already known for forging nations on his whim as the Rheinbund, Duchy of Warsaw, Grand Duchy of Finland, and the Baltic League illustrated, and was now ready to do so again, dismantling the British Empire, with Wales as his first target. Agents spread rumors not of invasion, but that a Welsh State would be created alongside an Irish and Scottish one, and Welsh nationalists quickly began plotting how they might support France if and when an invasion came, assuming a French force would go to Ireland or straight into Dover. Instead, Napoleon's second, larger force landed in Anglesey, and began an immediate "Welsh Liberation" in hopes that the Corsican Emperor could quickly gain a local militia to bolster his forces and offer him supplies as they began the long journey across England. Truthfully, Napoleon hoped to use this as yet another diversion, with a smaller but elite group of soldiers set to land in Medway from Holland once the majority of British troops had moved to defend the Western Front. It was to be quick, clean, and easy. One of Napoleon's officer is said to have coined a popular phrase when the plan was finalized: "Sir, nothing is ever easy with the damn f--king British."

It was an act of God that several British vessels had been on their way back from India when a storm forced them to dock in Cork. Departing to make for England, they saw the French forces, and preceded to signal the shore. Irish garrisons promptly fired on the initial French fleet before word reached the Irish nationalists, who overran the garrison to allow the French safe passage, but the damage was done; over half of the invasion force was in some way damaged, and the ensuing Invasion of Ireland failed after several bloody battles. Still, the landing in Wales was successful, and the establishment of the Free Welsh Republic was done with surprising ease. However, an error made by the navigators for the French Invasion of England resulted in the elite forces ending up near Yarmouth, then resulting in their defeat when they finally arrived near London, with Scottish units coming in to fend off the "Welsh Prong", allowing English troops to defend London. Thus, Boney's Great Gambit failed, and it garnered Britain enough sway to gain the allegiance of the Prussians (later the Prusso-Hungarians) for decades to come, and while the ensuing war would not dethrone Napoleon, it would allow for a few losses for the bloated French Empire, and made treaty negotiations far more balanced. However, it is from these events that the ethnic tensions that would come to plague Britain truly evolved: in the eyes of the English, the Scots had defended Britain valiantly, but the Welsh and Irish had betrayed them.

The beginnings of the Free Society are often traced back to two pieces of legislation. The first is the Act Concerning Irish Industry, enacted by Parliament early on during industrialization in Ireland following the population boom of the Emerald Isle. Simply put, it allowed "Crown-approved corporations" to take control of Irish factories. As said owners began to use non-Irish labor for management and imposing harsh rules and punishment on Irish workers, various socialist movements began to spread across the island, and numerous riots and protests raged across cities. However, what may have once created an Irish communist state, instead spread across the United Kingdom, leading to its unified liberation. This is mainly due to the fact that, seeing the efficiency of Irish factories, factory owners began employing similar barbarism in their shops across the isles. The second act that contributed to the Free Society was the Welsh Assimilation Act. Seeing the Welsh as a greater threat than the Irish (for the seas acted as a defense if "the Perfidious Paddies" ever turned on the Crown again), Parliament began a systematic erasure of Welsh culture on a scale unseen up until that point. The language was banned, being a fine-able offense, with execution for treason in some cities if one was a three-time offender; the military governors organizing rebuilding efforts were all English, and almost all ended up as lords as "treasonous" Welsh nobles were stripped of titles; public education demonized Welsh culture, and taught that the "Counties of Monmouth, Morgan, Carmeth, Pembrooke, Cardigan, Breckneck, Radner, Montgomery, Denbick, Flint, Merion, Careniff, and Anglesey" were "historical and integral components" of the "Nation of England." Within a generation, the term "Welsh" was a nasty slur used to decry a lack of etiquette or civility.

The Free Society began initially as just that: a political society, officially the Society for Free Thought and Political Discourse, a gentleman's club in the growing city of Leicester for innovative thinkers of the late 19th Century, which opened to include gentry and merchants before eventually allowing any man who could "dust up" to be welcome in its halls; it only took a few nagging wives after that before they would come along as well, and soon an egalitarian club for political philosophy was born, with the predominant ideology (following the allowance of the working class) soon becoming Anarcho-Nationalism, or Drommundism as it was known for Arthur Drommund, the Scottish-English author who penned The Path to Freedom, which was much like the Communist Manifesto, but instead exposed the straight movement to a stateless society ruled by a coalition of labor unions in various regions that in turn sent representatives to negotiate with a national-level coalition (for Drommund believed the nation-state to be the only true border or boundary that could be used, comparing ethnic lines to the range of species of animals), with a multinational coalition being formed from representatives of the national ones should they so choose (creating a polynation in Drommund's words). Of course, should every nation come under the ideology, a weltnation would then be formed, unifying mankind. Other clubs opened up across Britain, especially in Ireland, taking in many Marxists, as the brutal communist uprisings in the Alpine-Sava Federal Kingdom began a disillusion and decline in the ideology's membership. Eventually a crackdown on the Society came with ascension of King Adolphus II, or "Fat King Al", who was notoriously more conservative than his mother Queen Charlotte II, ending the Charlottian Era, and who began a series of Crown-approved monopolies, essentially extending the Irish Industry Act to the Isles as a whole, creating a quickly growing corporate oligarchy. The revolution came when the Great Famine did, caused by a combination of over-intensive farming, a lack of crop diversity, and pollution that caused both soil acidifcation and eutrification. With political oppression rife and starvation found everywhere from Inverness to Devon, the Society acted, having radicalized as they went underground. The Glorious Liberation was bloody and violent, but from the political instability of the United Kingdom, rose the nation known today as the Free Society of the British Isles.

As an avowed anarchist state, there is no true central government, instead the Polynational Coalition of Syndicates, with the three constituent nations each having their own National Coalitions, and from there are shire-level, county-level, and municipal-level Coalitions, with a Syndicate for each major form of industry and services. One of the most powerful syndicates is the Bankers' Syndicate, which maintains a central bank with one currency, the Freepence or Free Pence, (fP as the abbreviation). The Head of Government is technically the Chairman of the Polynational Coalition, with the Head of State being the Chief Emissary of the Diplomatic Delegation, a body maintained by various legal and political syndicates to keep the FSB (as it is commonly shortened) relevant and represented on the international level. Finally, the Commander-in-Chief is the Supreme Marshal of the Defensive Forces, who is in effect the highest ranking officer promoted by the Soldiers' Syndicate, itself a coalition of the Navy, Army, Marines', Aviators', and Submariners' Syndicates.

Furthermore, of course, being anarchists, there is no official flag for the Free Society. However, the Diplomatic Delegation, for purposes of diplomacy and for use in legitimizing their country, has created a de facto flag of sorts, which has been recognized in some capacity by most other nations. While two separate pieces, the flags are always flown together by the FSB diplomats. The bottom flag represents the three Nations of the FSB; Red for England, Blue for Scotland, and Green for Ireland (some nations recognize this as the national flag, sometimes with and sometimes without the white between the tricolor, and the same variance is found with the tongued-swallowtailing). The top flag represents how all three rally together under the banner of Anarchism, with the de facto national motto and revolutionary battle cry "Freedom Or Death!" written in Latin. This upper banner is popular in the Isles, flown and worn as armbands by many, with the three Nation-colors used mostly for sporting events or by the Polynational Coalition, and even then are mostly for recognition of who is representing where during hectic debates and negotiations.

Sometimes that's the best way. Proves there's more than a slapdash approach.
I think half of mine start off as brainstorming scenarios so they start off wordy!

Honestly with how much planning I did for mine to be at all plausible, I could probably make a TL out of it...

New challenge is here: a somewhat reversed version of the last one.
FLAG CHALLENGE #154: Workers of the World, Unite (if you have money)

Create a flag for any nation/society that takes capitalism or related ideologies (propertarianism, etc) to the extreme. The colours or symbolism used in the flag is up to you, but remember to highlight the ideals of capitalism in your flag, e.g. the colour yellow, the Libertatis Æquilibritas, etc.

The only rules for this challenge are:
  • No ASB-like submissions.
  • Keep it modern day / historical, no overly sci-fi stuff. (although you can be a little bit futuristic if you want, not too far into the future, though)
Submissions Open: Now

Liberal Federation of Russia. 1991-onwards.
Instead of breaking into several states, the Soviet Union, it reforms itself and becomes democratic, aided by the Americans. The new party declares the former USSR a Democratic Federation. The new nation also has to reform the economy. Since the industry and agriculture were controlled by the state, the industry was privatized quickly, creating a huge economical gap between those who became owners and those who remained workers. However this caused unrest among the people, as they saw no improvement from communism to democracy. Since the state had planned for an economy similar to the american one, few, large corporations that dominate the economy, people saw them as nothing more than rebranded communists. After mass riots in many cities the goverment changes it's economical plan to a free market. And re-privatizes the industry and agriculture, into smaller companies, creating more companies. Since this causes a market with many producers for many consumers, it forces everyone to make the best product or service, creating a huge economic boom in the coming decade, leading the russians to beat everyone in terms of both quality and quantity of products.
The flag is based on the anarcho-capitalist flag, but the field is divided per saltire, the colours are also based on the colours of the white black yellow flag of the Empire of Russia. The blue slatire represents democracy,( but russian) and the 15 stars represent the member countries of the federation. The eagle, stars and blue background, are made to look as american as possible, while still having russian symbolism.

The Republic of Margarite
The Republic of Margarite, also known as the Daisy Republic, is based on the southeast coast of North America; it is one of the earliest republics to be formed out of the American Rebellions during the British Civil War.
Following the Daisy Revolution in the 20s the previous oligarchic republic was replaced with one based on individualistic capitalist ideals - inheritance was forbidden and any individual wealth was absorbed by the state upon their death. The Corporation Act of 1940 however allowed a person's wealth to be given to (state approved) corporations that provided services to the Republic.
Today the Daisy Republic has essentially returned to its oligarchic roots with Corporations replacing the Founding Families in all but name.
The flag features a daisy with a gold disc representing both individualism and monetarism.
