Here is a primary consisting of all four nominees since 2000, I combined McCain and Romney's multiple runs.
Republican_Party_(United_States)_presidential_primaries_results,_2008.png

John McCain - 28.23% (697)
Mitt Romney - 26.06% (647)
Donald Trump - 24.69% (637)
George W. Bush - 21.02% (350)

So, who does the RNC pick now?

Since Trump probably wouldn't bow out in a contested convention, and I'm guessing Romney wouldn't either if he's that close to McCain, the convention would probably end up trying to draft Condoleezza Rice or Paul Ryan or someone.

Bull Moosers: The 1912 Election

The 1912 election is well-known as one of the most remarkable elections in American history. It represented an end to the Fourth Party System, dominated by the Republican Party, as that party split terminally between its conservatives (led by incumbent President William Howard Taft) and its progressives (represented by former President Theodore Roosevelt). At first, it seemed a Democratic landslide victory for Speaker of the House Champ Clark was guaranteed. However, when the corrupt New York political machine Tammany Hall (which had stayed surprisingly quiet during the primaries) threw its support behind Clark's candidacy to considerable fanfare, he put himself in major jeopardy as it ironically weakened his progressive credentials.

This worked to benefit all three of his opponents; Roosevelt was able to shrug off his slow start and the anti-trust fiasco of the Progressive convention to present his party as 'the only one which will truly provide the American people with the prosperity and measures they so deserve', Taft was able to attack Clark as trying to play into the hands of his leftist opponents, and even Socialist candidate Eugene Debs (who had achieved surprising momentum in the campaign) sapped a surprising amount of support from him by taking a relative moral high ground.

By election day, the most contentious race for the White House since the Civil War had reached boiling point.

genusmap.php

Roosevelt/Johnson (Progressive): 244 EVs, 32.0%
Clark/ Wilson (Democratic): 244 EVs, 31.4%
Taft/ Butler (Republican): 30 EVs, 28.2%
Debs/ Seidel (Socialist): 13 EVs, 8.2%

An electoral gridlock ensued. Although the Progressives had narrowly won the most states and the popular vote (albeit barely), two faithless electors in California (where Roosevelt won by a wafer-thin margin) voted for Clark, putting the two tickets even in the Electoral College. Clark's falling numbers allowed Debs to snag both Nevada and Oklahoma with tiny pluralities.

Despite his personal friendship with Taft, Roosevelt was loath to go to him seeking a hand up into the White House, whilst Clark was worried about the implications it could have on his reputation and the future of his party. Predictably, no one approached Debs for his support.
Ultimately, on the 20th November, the vote in the House saw Champ Clark elected President, with the Senate voting for the election of Woodrow Wilson as Vice President.

Despite the end of the gridlock, its impact on the political landscape would endure for decades to come.

(Warning: possible infestation of ASBs ahead.)

The GOP should just abolish itself after these.

Tried to make an electoral map in the vein of Ares96's Laboratories of Democracy series using a state from my previous map of an alternate US, tell me how you guys think it turned out.

The state of Metropotamia has long been a stronghold of Labor ever since the party first came into existence during the late 1800s. A state dominated by a single city, Detroit, their politics have long been determined by the trade unions which operate within the capital city. From the 1930s to the 1960s the state like the rest of the country was locked down by the Labor party, frequently running a majority of its seats unopposed. When Conservative revolution of 1972 brought out nationwide electoral reform regional PR was established in the state, bringing a large variety into the legislature. However as the turbulent 70s settled and Republican domination of the White House continued into the 80s the state of Metropotamia stood as a bastion of Labor, relying on its every loyal support by union workers.

While in other states massive left wing opposition parties such as the Greens ate away at Labor's support in Metropotamia the right was divided by the Constitution Party which represented the Christian Right, acting as a large spoiler for the Republicans. This situation only grew worse in the 90s with the rebirth of the Social Credit party which combined isolationism and xenophobia with a focus on the working class and infrastructure renewal projects. However the Second Great Depression of 2009 and the perceived failures of both the Labor and Republican governments fueled support for Social Credit which began eating into Labor's older white working class vote. This combined with the rebirth of the Black Panther Party in 2014 caused Labor to lose a majority of the seats in the Metropotamian legislature for the first time since 1976.

With Labor forced into an uneasy coalition with the radical Black Panther Party exchanging a demilitarization of the police for enough votes to secure a majority Labor's oldest stronghold has been left hanging by a thread.

Government:
Labor - The main social democratic party in America, they are the party responsible for the creation of the modern welfare state and were the founders of the National coalition which held government in Congress for half a century. Recently they have been criticized by many on the left for their embrace of the "Middle Option" which many see as a betrayal of its socialist principles. While still center left on economic issues they are centrist on most social issues such as LGBT rights which many Green politicians see as pandering to their base of older voters.
Black Panther Party - Originally founded during the turbulent 70s in radical opposition to the conservatives repeal of the Civil Rights Act it soon fizzled out with its reinstatement and become little more than an one seat party in Oakland. However the recent race riots of '14 and '15 have lead to a rebirth of their party among inner city blacks across the North. Their coalition with Labor in Metropotamia has been the second time in which the party has entered a state's government, with their first being in Alta California as part of the Peace and Prosperity coalition.

Opposition:
Social Credit - A right of center party which mixes beliefs from both the right and left its main platform is a return to isolationism in America. With their signature triple call to end free trade, wars in the Middle East, and all immigration from Latin America they have found a passionate base among dissatisfied white working class voters. Often called the "Democrats of the North" they have been called racists by the leadership of both Republican and Labor parties.
Republicans - The Grand Old Party has seen better days, especially in the state of Metropotamia where it has been knocked down to third party by the rising Social Creds. A party comprised of both liberals and conservatives it main emphasis is on reducing the size of government and increasing freedoms for businesses. Seen as the party of Big Business by both leftists and paleoconservatives this party has been in steady decline ever since the Second Great Depression.
Constitutionists - Representatives of the Christian Right they has grown more and more influential ever since their debut in the election of 1976. Advocating for smaller government and a return to "traditional Christian values" they have been popular with the more rural and Protestant western half of the state. Recently they have been pushed out of several seats by Social Credit, however gains in Kent County have off set those losses.
United Left - The second largest left opposition party to Labor this party forms the vanguard for everyone from democratic socialists to Trotiskyists. While seen as nothing more than a fringe party to mainstream America in the heart of Red Metropotamia they have found support from hardcore leftists who see Labor as nothing more than Republicans lite.
People's Justice Party - A minor one seat party in Dearborn District, they were founded in 2002 as a response to Labor's invasion of the United Arab Republic. While publicly claiming to be a solely secular party which opposes the "imperialist" Labor party it also has questionable links to multiple jihadist organizations and its legal defense has been paid for by and large by the Saudi Caliphate.
