Do you have a legend?

Some of what is going in these maps is clear, and at other points, as clear as mud.

And Afrikaners did try regulate the end of apartheid, but nothing less than one unitary state was ever going to fly during the negotiations to end apartheid.

If the end of apartheid is more violent there is the possibility that South Africa could balkanise.

Long live the ISOT bandwagon! I don't mind picking apart or getting picked apart . Sometimes we all overestimate and sometimes underestimate the abilities of nations, and by putting those nations in a vacuum (somewhat what an ISOT is) we expose those failings of ourselves more clearly. I've been thinking about the capabilities of a state put into a such a vacuum a lot, and well, here we go with population numbers and growth rates and whatnot.

Devanagari ISOT World- थ (similar but not the same to the English 'tha'. Try putting your tongue between your teeth, and make an aspirated 'T' sound).
In this world nations whose Hindi name starts with थ have ISOTed to a human-less earth which diverged about four million years ago from our own. There's only one such country, Thailand (थाईलैण्ड- 'Thaaeelaend').
untitled_by_goliath_maps-da73w1m.png

Thailand, finding itself totally alone, had a rough time. Plentiful space, and the ability of farmers to move to nearby farmlands, which although good enough for sustenance levels were not terribly conducive to massive population building, kept humanity afloat.

By the year 2500, humanity (speaking various languages, all regarded as mere dialects of 'Standard Thai') is spread very thin, and is reliant on agriculture. Trade is rather limited, and the vast majority of inhabited territory is occupied by somewhat anarchist/libertarian groups and local rule. The two large Buddhist monarchies controlling China-Korea-Japan and the Middle East (including Egypt) aside, feudalism is more dominate than authoritarianism, and rule by clan/by tribe/by village is more dominate than feudalism. The "First World" includes parts of India, Southern China, Continental South East Asia (now having been at peace for centuries) Indonesia, and East Africa. Religion is big, but not a source of conflict; almost the entirety of the world is either Buddhist or following a splintered sect of Buddhism. The main exception is Australia, which is Muslim Thai. The Muslims of Southern Thailand were among the first to migrate out, but successive waves of Buddhists pushed them further and further south over the centuries. Eventually they settled in Australia, before being conquered by the now-Buddhist inhabitants of Indonesia. In the last century, an Islamic Revolution overthrew the oppressors and established a shariah state that, while not being really a bad place (alcohol is still legal for instance) is a global pariah. Technology fell back to the 90s fairly quickly after the event, and remained their for centuries. Without state-funding, advancements have come slowly and out of necessity, though a democracy in Eastern Africa recently started Moon missions. International Orders of Buddhist monks, while easily willing to split on the lines of dogma, nevertheless are a connected, influential group that not-so secretly does most of the scientific or academic work in the world. A somewhat more useless version of the internet has been in use for centuries, and shows no signs of replacing the written word more fully in the future, though it is much less centrally controlled or monitored. Things may about to change, as a demographic boom seems to be approaching, thanks to living standards returning to 2016 levels. And though trade has been low, with the highly isolated from itself, large parts may be about to become once again connected.

This is really good! You're spot on on that bit about over and underestimating nations, and you've done a very nice job in putting said ideas in practice. The settlement patterns are sensible - you can't really predict _exactly_ how things would turn out but your guesses seem pretty good. Nice work, and I'd certainly be happy seeing more one-nation ISOT's in the future.

Oh crap. I can finally post now. After like three months of waiting to do so. I just had to say, I'm enjoying looking at all the amazing influx of ISOT maps fellas. I hope to see some crazy worlds, and maybe even some relatively normal ones.

Is it possible to do map requests here? I just don't have much time for fun maps ATM.

If anyone's interested, it's for https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/wi-stalin-buys-the-proposal.391062/#post-12571229
With the scenario being Stalin accepts Hitlers bait to attack the British, particularly in Asia. The main targets of course are India, Iraq, Kuwait and French Syria, but Persia, Afghanistan and possibly Turkey are also attacked in some form or another (to be fair the latter may only involve crossing the Zagros mountains in the east as opposed to a full scale one). And of course some plausible implications for this. Assume Nazi success in Europe is more or less otl level, plus any advantages a more distracted Britain may give.

Here's a blank map of Rhode Island with town outlines (since there isn't a good one out there):

To go along with it, I also made an ancestry map using Statistical Atlas (more or less self-explanatory):

Can we have a key or something? I mean I can guess most of those, but still it's a bit hard to tell who is who at times.

Follow-up question: Mormon is an ethnicity?

I think that the pink in Utah is English ancestry. It's the same color as in Northern Maine and elsewhere

Okay, changed the map so it would be a little more realistic.

Americas
  • The Republic of Cascadia is the dominating force in the world. Currently settling the gold filled California.
  • With the founding of Cascadia and the desire of some to settle new lands that didn't fall under Cascadian jurisdiction led to the creation of the Republic of Deseret. Deseret is a theodemocray surrounding the area around Salt Lake. Kinda friends with Cascadia, up to a point.
  • Unified States of American Liberty is many small states that follow a libertarian ideology along the Alaskan coast. The nation is headed by a large council with one member from each state. They have a large dislike of Cascadia, seeing them as a statist, authoritarian, imperialistic empire.
  • Peru has free reign over South America, but are having some problems colonizing anything past the Andes mountain range. They have spawned only one new state, which is the Republic of Panama. They hope to eventually build a canal to begin colonizing the Caribbean.
  • The colonies of New Ireland are currently thriving thanks to help from the Cascadians.

Europe

  • The Republic of Ireland was the only completely independent nation to be sent to Europe.
  • Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man discussed if they should reform the United Kingdom or become independent. They chose to unify to prevent total economic collapse. A monarch was found in a small town near the border of Scotland. Currently, Queen Victoria II rules The United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland.
  • Brittany had a few problems, but they were able to get back on their feet fairly quickly. Current ruler of the mainland.
  • Basque country, the surprise independent nation, Brittany helped them get back on their feet. Seen as friendly rivals of Brittany when it comes to colonizing the continent.
  • The Papal States have been reborn by Catholics wishing the rebuild the Vatican. Colonization increased once Morocco started colonizing Sicily.
  • The French Republic has rebuilt Paris. The Republic of the Netherlands is currently home to most of the German, Danish, Austrian, Belgian, and Swiss citizens until they can rebuild their nations.
Africa
  • Morocco is having a heyday building an empire throughout Europe.
  • South Africa is the current rival to Morocco in the "How fast can I make an empire" challenge. Morocco is currently in the lead.

Asia/Middle East

  • Israel, the only nation of the Middle East to the brought to this New World. Currently very pleased that they currently hold the entire Promised Land.
  • Muslims from around the world flocked to the Arabian Peninsula to rebuild Mecca.
  • Don't be fooled by "independent" Japan, it's a Cascadian Puppet.

Oceania

  • New Zealand was sad to be all alone, but in recent years has become friends with Cascadia after being rediscovered.
  • Colonization of what used to be Australia is going well. Only a few giant kangaroos to worry about.

    (Better?)
And Hongcouver recolonizing Hong Kong?:p

I feel that you being forced to change your map isn't a good thing at all. Why in hell's name does everyone agressively pick apart every map thats uploaded?
Keep in mind, I never force or really suggest people make changes to maps. It was mostly honest confusion, as if Northern Ireland was not brought along then it would not have autonomous status, as there would be no people left there.

Thanks! Ghana and Sri Lanka are also going to be by themselves once ISOTed, but I'm not sure how that will work out yet.

Depends on if the Tamils manage to escape in time, and not be swallowed up like it seems the Malays might have in your last map. Unless they are the ones who went off to Australia.

He wasn't forced to change his map...

No one held a gun to his head and said "change this!"

And people don't aggressively pick apart everything. He posted a scenario and people brought up issues with it. Some aspects he defended, whilst others he changed.

2000: Godwin's government was rather unpopular. A decline in civil liberties and increasing paranoia about not just 'closet capitalists' but 'closet fascists' merely increased the divide between already self segregating ethnic groups. Increased quota demands led to strikes which were often put down violently. Not only that, but when workers in Mexico launched a general strike in several cities due to declining saftey conditions and increasing scarcity of resources the USSA military moved in with the Mexican military to brutally crush dissent. Other USSA aligned powers began to question if Washington recognised their sovreignt.

The rest of the world grew frightened of the USSA in a way not seen since the Red Scare of the 1930s. Madrid and New Delhi quickly declared that for all his shouting against the rest of the world being crypto-fascist it was in fact Godwin that had abandoned Communism for Fascism. Moscow and the rest of the E11 (expanded to include Korea) launched a number of sactions against the USSA in response.

Still, Godwin maintained some popular support due to increasing success in the Space Race, as a number of probes were sent to work out landing sites on Mars. In November of 1998 the manned mission to Mars was launched, with a diverse crew of 6 astronauts from every corner of the USSA. Live television broadcasts were made to the entire world throughout much of 1999, however by early August (with a few months still left in the trip) the frequency of these broadcasts dropped significantly. The USSSA (United Socialist States Space Agency) declared it a combination of the astronauts having to put more effort into excercise to combat microgravity and it taking more energy to broadcast such long distance signals. Still, the few broadcasts that did occur seemed to show the astronauts looking frailer and frailer. The truth (which many scientists in the Democratic world guessed at) was that the ship's radiation shielding had proven insufficient. Still, President Godwin refused to abort the mission, refusing to accept failure no matter how evident.

When the landing crew touched down on Mars in early December of 1999 only two crew members felt strong enough to attempt the official (televised live) first steps on Mars after a rough atmospheric entry. Unfortunately the first one out the door, Thomas Washington (of the New Africa Socialist District), had overestimated his leg strength and while carrying the flag down the landing craft's ladded tripped, and fell, smashing open his helmet onto a nearby rock. The second astronaut who'd been feeling strong enough (Camille Drapeau of Quebec) managed to climb down the ladder and attempted to drag Washington back in to safety, but in her exhausted state did not save him in time. The first man on Mars had died, and the people demanded Godwin's head. (It is worth noting that after some time to recover from the landing roughly half of the crew was able to get to work collecting samples and other important work, but the landing had taken some time to recover from.)

With mass protests in the streets Godwin was quickly arrest by members of the military and placed on trial for crimes against the nation. He was given a quick show trial before an execution. Unfortunately for all the Military and the Communist Party did not see completely eye to eye on how to advance. In the military's eyes the Party had gone from bad to worse between Irons, the Junta, and Godwin, and as such declared a military government in place (some less ideological elements of the Party supported this). The Party meanwhile (with support from some of the more ideological elements of the military) declared an emergency government based in Chicago and declared the Washington based Military Council traitors. Many of the ethnic homelands chose to side with neither, Quebec seceding mere hours after the Chicago government was declared, and soon many followed.

The rest of the world waits holding their breath and hoping a nuclear exchange does not occur. At least South Africa's civil war ended without nukes being used, so there's some hope?

Beedok, as everyone else has said, this series is mucho danko. So how are the Souix gonna fair for secession? And, honestly, which government would probably prove the better? The Junta, or the Party? and would Ireland just sit there and remain commie?

NOTE: PLEASE stop posting these ISOTs! You all have a thread dedicated to this weird phenomenon... As hypocritical as this is coming from me of all people, just go. Or else I'll make a Strasserism joke. And now that I'm on it, Strasserism is not really Nazism. Both are very different; only uniting over a common dislike of the Jews, but their views of why they're bad stem from different reasons. No ban plz

North America in 1900
The three states that take up the vast majority of the continent are the United States of America, Republic of Louisiana, and the Republic of New Spain (colloquially called Mexico, even in some official documents).
