United States presidential election, 2016
Democratic Party primaries, 2016

In the 2012 United States presidential election, Barack Obama was challenged for re-election by Arnold Vinick, the Republican Governor of California. Vinick's nomination was in the midst of a shift of power from the Christian Right to the Libertarians/Moderates in the Republican Party, in an attempt to garner more widespread support outside of the most common Republican demographics. Vinick's campaign held a soft approach to abortion, gay marriage, and was notable for a strong defense of environmentalism.

Barack Obama and his Vice President, Mary Landrieu, secured a second term of office with a much narrower margin than in 2008, but as a show of bipartisanship, Arnold Vinick was appointed Secretary of State in January 2013, replacing the out-going Hillary Clinton. As Secretary of State, Vinick managed to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran, which was only narrowly approved by Congress because of Vinick calling in favors with the GOP.

The State of California was a point of controversy in the election due to the extremely narrow victory of Vinick. In the first results, Vinick had beaten Barack Obama by less than 1,000 votes. In the recount, which was mutually agreed upon by both candidates as an absolute necessity, it was confirmed that Vinick had bested the President in California by 984 votes, granting him an infinitely narrow plurality, and control of the state's electoral votes. However, Vinick had still lost the election.

Barack Obama's victory is credited in large-scale, to his brilliant performance in most of the swing-states. He spent very little time campaigning in traditionally Democratic strongholds such as Louisiana (which has, surprisingly, casted it's EVs for Democrats without hesitation since 1964.), and the Northeastern states, but he still won these regions with an ample majority.

And now, with the colors fixed and stuff, ta-da! Now we're using the Dems=Red, GOP=Blue color palette, b/c that's what Wikipedia uses!

The 2016 United States presidential election was a contentious one, with many candidates throwing themselves into the ring to seek election. The primaries consisted of Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders, Governor Martin O'Malley, among other minor candidates. A strange, yet admirable candidate was Former Deputy Chief of Staff Joshua Lyman. A liberal Democrat, he had strong liberal credentials during his time in the White House in the 1990s, and attracted voters from both Clinton and Sanders. While not considered a front-runner by any means, he managed to garner enough support from grassroots campaigns and Democrats who wanted to bring back the old Bartlett-era policies, and secured the nomination at the convention.

Despite Barack Obama's relatively successful two terms in office, there were growing concerns that Lyman would be bogged down by the Iran deal, which had narrowly made it through the Senate, as well as being bogged down by some of the lesser points of his time as Deputy Chief of Staff -- particularly questions regarding his fitness for office after being diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in 1999 after being nearly killed by white supremacists, the debacle with marijuana legalization during the tenure of Milly Griffith as Surgeon General, and the Presidential Health Scandal that nearly cost Josiah Bartlett re-election in 2000.

Despite these concerns, Joshua Lyman secured his victory, in no small part thanks to his crack political team, his charming and well-adored wife, Donna Lyman, and the shining endorsement of former President Bartlett. With this victory, he would become the next President of the United States. Lyman was also noted for being one of the youngest Presidents of the United States, being elected at age 47 (he was born in 1969)

Who served between Bartlett and Obama in this universe? (2004-2008?)

The 2011 Canadian federal election was held on 2 May 2011 to elect 247 members to the House of Commons of the 41st Canadian Parliament. The Canadian Alliance, led by Stephen Harper, was able to secure their first majority government since they came to power in 2002 under Preston Manning. Thanks to vote spliting on the right between the Alliance and Progressive Conservatives, who lost half their caucus, the Liberals avoided the disastrous outcome predicted by opinion polls. The NDP were able to double their number of ridings whilst the Greens secured an additional four seats. In Quebec the Bloc was almost wiped out, with leader Gilles Duceppe narrowly retaining his seat, although he would resign a week after the election.

So this one is a bit (read: very) convergent with OTL but it was one of the first wikiboxes to spark this project so I decided to keep it.
