The 16th Lord High Hermeticist of Scotland, James MacDonald, is in Scotland, the Queen’s agent for dealing with any magical affairs or incidents, and as such is the head of the Scottish Magical establishment. The position is extremely archaic, and like most of the Scottish Magical establishment, has survived almost unchanged since 1707, remaining completely separate from and somewhat adversarial towards it’s English counterpart. Indeed, it’s largest single organizational change since the Act of Union was that as of the declaration of the 16th Lord High Hermeticist, the magical establishment now reports to the Scottish Government in Holyrood, instead of solely reporting to the Crown and the Lord Advocate.

The 16th Lord High Hermeticist is like most previous holders of the post, is a man of considerable arcane knowledge and abilities, as well as being a consummate civil servant, and the wielder of the last known surviving flaming sword, Dyrnwyn. MacDonald has so far managed to avoid being involved in any serious scandal, although there was a minor incident when it was revealed that the Office of the Lord High Hermeticist was involved with the Baroness Kelly in a research project which used public funds to attempt to create a new magic sword, (the first such attempt in Britain since the end of the Napoleonic wars,) but this was found to be entirely within the capacities of his office. Either way, impressive alchemical feat as it was purely in structure, the Kelly Blade was a dud.

Interesting. It does seem likely that that is the sort of thing that would stay separate in Scotland. Somewhat reminiscent of the Peter Grant books, albeit if magic had remained mainstream in the 20th century in that setting.

It's really not mainstream though. There's a reason a lot of it is euphemismized, and that's because it's more of an open secret secret, with the public being about as convinced that magic is still real, as they are that the sky isn't blue. hence Specialty manufacturing and things like that.

Well, I meant comparatively: in that setting the magical organisation is technically not all that secret, but it's been drawn down to one guy because everyone was (wrongly) convinced that magic was fading from the world.

Is there one for Wales?
Nope. Scotland only has it's own as a quirk of history. The UK as a whole is under HM Office for Sorcerous affairs, and operates under very different rules than the Scots.

True. In this case, Magic has sort of been on the way out since way back when, so you don't get major magical acts anymore, and most Sorcerers can't do shit, and it really has been like that since the days of legend. Those that still can generally work smart, not hard.

This means there isn't much in the way of visibility unless something goes very, very wrong, and governments like that level of discretion, as it keeps the public from realizing that there are private citizens with WMDs from a bygone age that the government treads lightly around. As a result of being so low profile, Magical Regulatory and Law Enforcement agencies are small, relatively unaccountable, and tend to operate in an outwardly clandestine manner. Well, unless someone starts breaking out a magic sword, or doing a major summoning, and that's when the gloves come off.

Well, that's a bit sad. Is there anything relating to do with magic that reports to the Welsh Government?

Some environmental impact statements, and the parts of the police responsible for guarding sensitive sites in Wales?
It's generally kind of hard to divest a 400 year old organization of a significant part of it's staff and institutional knowledge.
The secure storage sites for artifacts in the hands of HM Government are in Wales though, except for some Irish objects which the Scots managed to get first and are in an undisclosed location in Scotland, but those aren't anything particularly notable.

Famed Fighter Ace, and hero of the Battle of Cayenne, who crashed behind enemy lines and fought his way back to his base with only a shovel and his service pistol, José Carranza.

The... departure from this plane of John C. Calhoun sent a shock-wave through the American establishment. The process for replacing the Grand Thaumaturgist had been established 70 years before, but had been largely academic. Indeed, some people had begun to think Calhoun would never leave office, and so the Grand Convocation in Chicago was so thoroughly befuddled in its purpose that its no surprise a dark horse like Cranston was able to split the difference between the Prometheans and Morrisites.

A World War One fighter ace, Cranston was publicly regarded as a disaffected socialite, but those in the know connected his name to certain... dark occurrences in the New York underground. Cranston knew where a lot of bodies were buried, not least because he'd put more than a few of them there himself.

Cranston was significantly more active during his comparatively brief tenure, but frequently found himself at odds with the likes of J. Edgar Hoover and Tom Dewey over issues that remain difficult to unravel even at this late date. Regardless, he as as passionate as anyone in the face of the Nazi menace, taking a very hands-on approach to the conflict, right up until his fighter vanished on a clandestine mission over the English Channel.

I love it.

And is that the Dick Tracy as his successor?
