Very interesting concepts with the Congressional leaders: I'm guessing the House is a much more interesting place to be OTL.

Each committee basically acts as its own mini-legislature, and if you don't get a seat on one of the interesting ones, you basically do nothing important.

Two Questions:
1. What's Martian Baptism?
2. How much time do the Offworld Congresspeople (and Senators) spend in their constituencies?
3. Did Herscel James really get married aged 9?

1. Just a branch of Baptism found on Mars.
2. For those from the Outer System, not much, which is sometimes an issue but it is what it is.

Thaddeus Mercer is the 70th Vice President of the United States, elected in 2132 on the same ticket as Benjamin G. Thurman. He had previously served as the County Executive of Lamont County, Magellan, Vega, on Venus. Lamont County has a consolidated county-city government with the city of Madrid with a total population of more than 20 million. He was the pick of the party machines which control the large urban areas--his father-in-law is Jeremy Bouck, the party boss of Magellan. While charismatic, personable and very well liked, Mercer is seen as something of a political lightweight. Most of his accomplishments as County Executive originated from the County Legislature (a bicameral body) or with the Lamont County Democratic Party, and he only rose as high as he did because of his father-in-law. Many late-night talk show comedians refer to him as Vice President Good Hair.

24 months is the standard term of service for all national service--Armed Forces, Minutemen, Conservation Corps, AmeriCorps, etc. And the government loves its assessment tests, so they probably have a whole battery of tests and systems.

An OTL government program that's broadly a domestic Peace Corps where individuals do community service work while attached to various public agencies or non-profit groups. This includes things like legal aid societies, food pantries/banks, homeless shelters, women's shelters, community centers, etc. It does the same sorts of things in AJND America, providing non-military, non-police work for teens doing their national service, largely those who'd otherwise get conscience objector, health or education deferrals.

IOTL the Conservation Corps (well the revived one, not the original CCC which was ended after the US entered WWII) was eventually put under the AmeriCorps umbrella. I take it this doesn't happen in AJND?

Yeah, the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) is under the OTL AmeriCorps organization along with VISTA and the National and State AmeriCorps, but in AJND, the Civil Conservation Corps remains separate. A general rule of thumb is that AmeriCorps does city projects and the Conservation Corps does rural and forest projects (that and the Conservation Corps is a bit paramilitary-y).

Ah. So the CCC is never dissolved then?

The old CCC dissolved during WW2 as per OTL, but was revived later for the same reasons as the NCCC came about and as a spot for conscientious objectors to still do national service.

No, still just really expanded Medicaid.
