I guess that could work too, perhaps being more of a societal marker of "Amerikaner-ized" persons regardless of skin color. Personally I'd have used similar population ratios for African-American-majority cities in OTL as a starting point, and then fine-tuning the numbers to account for various ethnic groups outside those two categories (multiracial persons, Asian/Indian immigrants, etc.), but your way could work for the TL's purposes too.

Valid point. I'll have to give it some thought on what I'm gonna do. Even if I end up sucking even worse at this TL, I can't cultivate a reputation any worse than the dude who actually wrote the original Draka. XD

Too right. No offense to Mr. Sterling, but it's pretty bad when I find works like "Proof Through the Night" more compelling and readable than the actual works it's based on.

Also, something else about your Infobox that caught my eye: why is Russian such a major language in Georgia and not one of the other African ones? I get that there's gonna be a major influx of revolutionaries like the Bolsheviks, but wouldn't they learn one of the other tongues given their later arrival and the fact that other languages would've been established? If nothing else, I'd say that you're missing one or two others in addition to those (Portuguese and Swahili come to mind). I'm sorry I keep bringing up so many nitpicks, please understand it comes from a place of support and interest .

This is the 2052 Japanese general election in Archangel Michael's A Jovian Night's Dream. Was meaning to post this yesterday due to it being the same day as the election, but was busy and it needed to be revised. Anyway, enjoy it. Have a Merry Christmas, everybody!

The frequent elections, thanks to a once-hegemonic duopoly party system (between the left-of-centre Socialists and the right-of-centre Liberal Democrats) being massively shook by the sudden rise of the technocratic centrist New Renaissance Party, was grating on the Japanese people's patience, and when the Socialist PM announced new elections less than 2 years after the last one, the Japanese people had enough and voted New Renaissance in with a solid plurality of votes. Meanwhile, the Green Party surged due to many Socialist voters growing disaffected with the current Socialist government. It also picked up centrist Liberal Democrats who couldn't bring themselves to vote New Renaissance. The Restoration Party, always somewhat lost after the Third World War, lost seats and votes, while the Communist Party fared little better as they split between the dominant "Marxist" faction (the JCP itself) and the rival "Reformist" faction (which split off as the People's Party). The Civic Party was a little insignificant party that surprisingly got votes from very disillusioned people who still believed in some form of democracy. Many Japanese people abstained from the elections.

This election would be the first in a long winning streak for the New Renaissance Party as they grew to dominate Japanese politics.

You know TPL99's Great Canada proposal? Well here is how it could turn out as well:

POD: Napoleon manages to defeat the British in the Battle of Trafalgar due to last minute reinforcements. Hot air balloons bomb London for months as Napoleon begins blockading the Thames and inciting Irish independence movements. The British monarchs flee to Canada and grant republicans a win in the British Isles. From Canada, their support eventually ends the war with the Battle of the Rhine after Napoleon's Eighty Days of Glory.

However, they keep control of India and the rest of their colonies from Canada and soon form an alliance with Mexico. Due to Canadian involvement in incitement, the South secedes in 1852, which is followed by the Canadian Empire and the Mexican Republic joining the CSA. (No Mexican-American War or Treaty for Oregon due to the alliance, by the way). The Canadians install a Canadian noble as monarch in New England, and later the Mexicans join in a personal union and eventual annexation by the Canadian Empire in 1871. With industry buildup, the Canadians ally the Germans and prevent WWI. The major war in 1963 results in the Canadians gaining New England and the CSA. By 2014, the Canadian Empire rules India, North America north of the Yucatan, South Africa to Congo to Egypt, and the Pacific colonies still with over 25,000 nukes to their German allies 23,000.

A (possible) Soviet Obama

Son of Armenian immigrant Enn Darbinyan Orlova and Russian born in Kenya Barak Goratsiy Orlov, Barak Orlov is the current president of the Soviet Union. Even suffering racial prejudice in the country, was a brilliant student and in 1982 had entered the Leningrad University, where he graduated in law three years later. In 1986 he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, influenced by his favorite teacher Dzheyms Karter. During the 1990s, Orlov concluded their degrees. His talent earned him a nomination for President of the University of Moscow in 1998. In 2003, resigned after his election to the Politburo. Orlov was gaining prominence, although not one of the favorites to succeed Gennady Zyuganov for president of the Soviet Union. With the announcement that the president would not run for a second term of five years, Orlov was nominated for the presidency and the post of general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party.

On 1 January 2012 he took office and had to face an economic crisis at the beginning of his term, with the devaluation of the ruble. Besides the repression of separatist movements across the country. In 2013, with the Brazilian president Ana Meirelles, the South African Prime Minister Wilhelm van Kleent, Chinese President Xi Chang Un and Indian Prime Minister Bala Bakshi signed the agreement establishing the BRICS bloc composed of the major developing economies . Within the USSR, Orlov suffers criticism for his approach to US President Vince Patting and the expansion of economic opening of the Soviet bloc. Such measures did the famous radio Ruslan Lipov call it "capitalist spy in the Soviet government."

The riots, and the scale of them. The implication of them seems to be that the government has been treating large amounts of the Irish population like sh*t for some time. (the pre-1972 devolved Ulster government is coming to my mind for me).

O Denizens of the Wikibox thread, I beseech thee:

(from the Greek politics thread)
At the current rate amendments are put to bills, by the end of the year the country will have changed its name, flag colours, Athens will have been relocated to Antarctica, and the official language will be Thai. :p

Somebody needs to make a wikibox based on this.

Any takers?

I'd assume that if the UK held onto Ireland they had probably placated them in some way (such as federalization/self rule) so there wouldn't be that much tension.

... but still riots. So clearly there is tension. I suspect we'll need Rascallite to come back and explain what he/she was trying to do with the infoboxes.

@Thande, I might have a go at it tomorrow...

Well, Ireland's had a significant amount of autonomy from London since the 1920's, more so than the other constituent countries. However, its laws could be, and sometimes were easily overridden by the British Parliament. The Troubles were much more intense and generalized, with low-scale guerrila warfare occurring in County Fermanagh and County Monaghan. Couple that with a NORAID that lasted much longer than in OTL.

In the early 80's, after IRA attacks on police stations throught Ireland, martial law was declared in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Galway and Bangor. According to the Ireland Office and the Ministry of Defence, these towns needed to be cleared out of all paramilitary organizations, loyalist and republican alike. Citizens were advised to leave town. By then, Ireland was much poorer than Britain and its economy was completely dependent on the rest of the United Kingdom. A common saying was: "When England sneezes, Ireland catches a cold". Needless to say, the declaration of martial law had a disastrous impact on the already struggling Irish economy. Furthermore, upon returning home, citizens were faced with cities battered by conflicts between the SAS and the paramilitary. This caused a lot of resentment on the Irish people.

Come 2014, Ireland is once again crippled by a financial crisis and for the first time in its history, a referendum on independence will take place. Riots were expected regardless of the result.

So, yeah, saying things are "tense" is quite an understatement.
