In 1314 Pope Clement V died in Avignon... The Papal chair remained vacant for 2 years because the Conclave was deadlocked between the Italian and French factions... After an intervention of King Philippe V in 1316 the Conclave dully elected the Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals Cardinal-Bishop of Porto Jacques d' Euse as Pope John XXII per compromisium (the last Pope being elected by a comittee of Cardinals) only when he vowed before them to return the Papacy to Rome... However after his coronation in Lyon he broke his vow and set up in Avignon... WI he had returned to Rome??? How would Philippe V reacts to that???
