Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

In the interim period between the creation of a new nation and the adoption of a flag by that nation, the European Union allocated a temporary flag. Each such flag consisted of the EU flag in a top left canton, the remainder of the flag being white with a unique badge for each new nation. In the case of Ins-Med the badge portrayed Poseidon - the God of the Sea to denote the trans-mediterranean nature of the nation.

The flag was loathed in each island and representatives gathered to choose a new flag as soon as possible. But after 150 years if deliberations by a changing group of delegates, it was decided to stick with the imposed flag!

Here is my humble submission to this weeks challenge:

The flag of the "Islamic Republic in South East Asia" was designed to resemble the flags of the Malaysian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia slightly, while being unique in its own right.

The flag spots a broad red bar in the centre, with the name of Allah written in the Arabic alphabet, with four stars above and below it. On both sides of the central bar, there are two green and two white bars, smaller than the one dominant.

Both the green-white bars and the stars represent the eight regions of the new state, while the word written on it represents its religious roots: the Islam.

The chosen colours are typical for Islamic flags, particullary Arab ones, even though in this case simply with the red standing for courage, the white for purity and the green for faith in Islam.

The Islamic Republic in South East Asia (الجمهورية الاسلامية في جنوب شرق آسيا) deliberately selected a flag that was different from the flags of both Indonesia and Malaysia, whose territories form the major part of the new, insurgent republic.

With 8 horizontal stripes, alternating in the traditional Muslim green and black colours, to represent the eight administrative regions, the flag bears a central white disc bearing the legend الله أكبر (‘Allāhu Akbar’, often translated as ‘God is Great’) in stylised script.

The flag of new Islamic Republic displays the time-honoured Islam colours of green, black and red. In the central portion there is a quotation - (Qur’an 29:69) which in English is “And those who strive in Our Cause, We will certainly guide them to our Paths, For verily Allah is with those who do right” - half circling a pair of crossed swords.

My submission for this week's flag challenge, my first!

The Five Stripes represent the five Pillars of Islam.
The Star-in-Crescent is a reference to Malaysia, while the eight-pointed star represents both the eight regions of the Islamic Republic in South East Asia.
The black, red, and green are Islamic colors, while the red and white are a nod to Indonesia and its history.

The flag of the Islamic Republic of Southeast Asia. The colours green, white and red represent Islam, purity and the blood shed by Muslims worldwide at the hands of non-Muslims. The crescent and star are traditional Islamic symbols with the star having eight points for the eight provinces of the IRSEA. Inside the crescent is a circular calligraphic representation of the Shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith).

This flag was first seen being used by insurgents who had taken control of Davao in the Phillipines.

The field is black with a white solar eclipse. The black represents the darkness of evil and ignorance of not following the true faith of Allah. The white eclipse represents a nation and peoples coming into God's shining light. The eclipse also doubles as a crecent found on the flags of many other islamic nations. The eight pointed star is the glaring eye of God. It is also representative of the old Majapahit symbol, as well as a stylized Rub el Hizb,

The for green stars, along with the eight pointed white star of the eclipse, represent the five pillars of Islam. The green of the four outer stars are also considered windows into Paradise.

Crescent = widespread on muslim nation flags.
Stars = also widespread in conjunction with crescent, 8 in number for the 8 regions of the new nation.
Serrations = 5 to represent the 5 core islamic tenets, one set facing right and the other left.

As the map shows, the small island formerly known as Spur Island has been renamed Sagan Island in honour of the scientist Carl Sagan. When the space probes Pioneer 10 and 11 were launched in 1972 and 1973 respectively they each carried a plaque devised by Sagan to inform intelligent extraterrestrial creatures about our location and appearance; part of that plaque depicted a male and female human. The Humanist factor is a large one in the ruling council of Dawkinsia, thus the use of the plaque's "humans representation" is deemed most appropriate and is set in a central oval field on the new flag.

The flag's background is diagonally bisected, half in sky blue (representing the environment and freedom) and half in pale lilac/mauve (a traditional colour for emancipation and equality).

The New Flag of "The British Crown Dependency of Dawkinsia"

History:

An online competition was set up by the new owners, The Demeter Foundation, to design the new flag for the dependency.

Over 120 entries were submitted from Peru to Cambodia, but the winning design came from one Esther Raymond, a biologist and eco-campaigner based in Sacramento, CA.

Overview:

Proportions:
-2:3
Colours:
-Green for nature and life
-Teal for the sky and sea
-White for peace
Design:
-Altered Saltire, with curved diagonals
New Curved dividers represent the double helix of DNA. Altered as per the conditions of the competition, whereby religious symbols are to be avoided. The all white section can also be identified as a 4 legged creature, further laying claim to the notion of a biologists haven.
-Three White Stars orientated so a vertex is directly facing the centre of the circle
Represents the three islands; the dependency they compose is dedicated to the ideas of evolution and peace, so are orientated towards the finches
-Emergent Sections filled Green and Teal
Represent the islands of the Galapagos, resembling the coastline of an island to the sea. Also represents a hill and the background of sky, to geometrically refer to the various habitats of the planet that evolution has given rise to
-Centre Circle of white
Encases the charge (see below Section)

Charge:
-Two stylised Finches, recognising the contributions of Charles Darwin to biology, referring to the famed "Darwin's Finches", coloured various shades of Grey as they are in real life.
-Olive branch representing peace, a nod to Dawkins who is a committed pacifist and often took part in rallies in his youth.

I beg permission to submit my flag entry for the kind consideration of the Council of Dawkinsia.

As an atheist, I chose the colours black and white to convey that if one sets aside superstition and blind faith then the answer is there in black and white. The central circle is white, denoting truth, and without any device, denoting that there is no supernatural being 'out there'. In the top left corner a lower case Greek 'd' (delta) stands for Dawkinsia while in the bottom right corner appears the international symbol for Humanism.

Here's my entry for the flag of Dawkinsia. The blue represents freedom, white represents peace, and the purple is equality. The empty set symbol is used to represent the absence of any higher power in life

My humble submission for the new flag of Dawkinsia is heavily influenced by the classic documentation "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan, who was already honoured posthumous by renaming of the purchased islands after his.

The flag, nicknamed "A Glorious Dawn" shows a spiral galaxy mimicing a sunrise with the "Happy Human", probably the most famous Humanist symbol around, standing in front of it.

Overall it represents the hopes for an educated and secular society, focused on scientific and social progress without the limitations caused by the various dogmas of most religions.

My entry for the flag of Dawkinsia -

White & green horizontally bisected background acknowledging the background of the flag of Wales.

The upper half shows a stylised representation of the evolution of mankind.

The bottom half shows the 'Torch of Knoweldge' symbol.
