TL-191 United States Presidential Elections Results Thread

What makes these ATL Hispanics more socially conservative than OTL Hispanics? IOTL Hispanics are no more socially conservative than your average American (which goes to show how faulty "Hispanic" is as a social construct. I'm not even sure it would develop in an ATL).
True, true. They probably vote Socialist for economic reasons.

I also have a seriously hard time imagining the party of Flora Blackford/Hamburger going socially right-wing in general.
I have a hard time imagining the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt going socially right-wing in general.

I have a hard time imagining the party of Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk going socially left-wing in general.

American parties change. A Socialist party is not invulnerable to change.

What's the reason behind the 180 flip in socialist policy ITTL?

The Republican resurgence and the Socialist hegemony falling in the mid-term elections of 1986 in which they were reduced to a minority.

This resulted in many liberals switching to the Republicans, and there were a short and brutal battle between the real socialists and the soc. conservatives.

What brings about the William Jennings Bryan (Blue Labour) political resurgence in the U.S.? In the present system genuine economic progressive social conservative types are exceedingly rare in this country.

I know. I haven't worked out all the details yet, but its due to a number of factors.

Fair enough, I'll be interested to see what you come up with. In my headcanon of TL-191 after the end of the series I have the U.S. system starting to resemble the current British system with the Socialists as Labour the Democrats as the Tories and the Republicans as the Lib Dems but maybe more regionally-based. It'd be interesting to see an alternative to that though.

Wasn't Flora regarded as a radical even within the Socialists though? There's no indication that the rest of the party was nearly as secular minded as she was. Heck the first time Hosea Blackford met her he quoted Scripture at her, Upton Sinclair was certainly a very religious man, and Norman Thomas was OTL a Presbyterian minister.

While I personally think the Republicans would be more likely to become the socially conservative party (having their power base in the religious minded farm states and all), it is certainly possible for the Socialists to go that way instead.

1920: Upton Sinclair (S-NJ)/Hosea Blackford (S-DA) vs. Theodore Roosevelt (D-NY)/Walter McKenna (D-PA) & Robert McCormick (R-IL)/Jack Hounsome (R-NE)

1996: Jack Kemp (D-NY)/Donald Rumsfeld (D-IL) vs. Tom Harkin (R-IO)/Michael Dukakis (R-MA) & Alina Fernandez (S-CU)/? (S-?)

What happened to Ben Stein, as was suggested earlier? Perhaps put him in the VP spot? And when do the new elections go up? :)

You mean "Bueller, Bueller" Ben Stein? I don't think he'd really be in the Socialist camp. He's a creationist, for crying out loud.

Incidentally, Blue, I haven't forgotten about the infoboxes for 1916 and 1992; I've just been busy.

With Fernandez at the top they'll probably go safe, white, and male for veep. Bob Kerrey? Tom Daschle?
