IDK, something about Hart not goading the press and keeping his scandal hidden until the first primaries. A split in the northern delegation allows Gore to come out narrowly on top, eventually avoiding a brokered convention when Dukakis withdraws and endorses him. The last-minute breaking of Hart's troubles allows Pat Robertson to rise in the Republican primaries, and he gives Bush a hell of a fight compared to OTL.

As long as I'm sitting in the chair, there's not going to be any Jew appointed to that court.

If you knew the president, then that was probably a facetious remark.

Based on Thande's idea about Rayburn staying (as well as living, obviously) on until the Kennedy Assassination. Assume that McCormack drowned in the Boston Harbour sometime in the late 50's.

[1] - And so it was that in the aftermath of the twin deaths of the President and Vice President on the same day, the 81 year old Sam Rayburn arose to the office he had never desired. His health, which had been in turmoil for years, declined rapidly and he had succumbed to a heart attack by the end of the week. America had to contend with the death of yet another President.

[2] - The President Pro Tempore ascended to the Oval Office at the advanced age of 87. And yet, despite being only a decade away from becoming an centenarian, he was able to see his term to completion. He spends his time delegating power to congress, while also wavering on civil rights. Riots intensify during his term as work stays stagnant, with the exception of labor-friendly reforms. The 1964 election sees a fight between Senator Humphrey and Governor Rockefeller, with Governor Wallace attempting to deadlock the college. Hayden did not actively campaign owing to his age. It would matter little as Humphrey eked out a victory, with Rockefeller hampered by his marital status throughout the campaign.

    [3] - Humphre
