An updated version of this table. Special parade uniforms for Army Cavalry divisions. The Terran militaries, long ago, took to appropriating cavalry traditions and designations for armoured vehicle formations. Over time these broad delineations took shape.

This time, a character's uniforms. Revision of William McGrady's uniform sets.
Lord William McGrady, Baron, 1st Duke of Wallerstein, is a State Security general officer and war hero, holding the rank of Exarch and Chief Marshal of the State Security Forces, and the position of Assistant Secretary and Director-General for Field Operations in the Ministry of State Security. His department is responsible for fighting the enemies of the Republic both through gathering foreign intelligence and the employment of direct action. General McGrady comes from a large spacer family famed for its involvement in politics, culture, and government. He served in the Terran Army from 3262 to 3267, fighting in the early years of the Great War in several battles and earning many decorations. He served in the intelligence apparatus of the Terran state, participating in commando raids and assassinations before commanding a special operations unit. He was appointed Director of Field Operations in late 3270, and has held command of the department since.
Unbeknownst to many, he is a clinically-diagnosed sadistic sociopath. He was allowed to go as far as he has due partly to the intevention of his very politically powerful mother, and partly due to his own outward professionalism and effectiveness at the job.

At left is the standard Service Uniform he wears, patterned in that of a marshal of the State Security Forces. His rank insignia--two crossed batons with a pip at the crosspoint set below a cluster of three oak leaves--makes it clear that he is the Chief Marshal of the forces. His uniform is otherwise unadorned, for general service and office wear. Next is McGrady's second variation of the uniform, showing the marshal's peaked cap as well as his flared officer's breeches with calf boots.

Then is the Parade Dress uniform, displaying his various medals and awards--many of which were earned during his five-year Army service at the height of the Great War; included are top awards for combat valour, as well as Infantry Assault, Close Combat, Tank Assault, and Wound Badges in various grades. Aside from these are his awards for achievement in military and intelligence commands, including the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross and Grand Cross of the Order for Merit, as well as the Golden Knight's Cross for War Merit, all indicating his successful service in areas of great responsibility during and after the war. Next to this is the Full Dress White uniform of the State Security troops, with the major change from the normal parade uniform being the colour and the addition of the sash for the Grand Star of the Iron Cross. A similar full dress in black exists, but McGrady never wears one as it reminds him of his interdepartmental rival, Xander Vox.

Last is his simple, cut-down Field Duty uniform. Despite being a high-level general officer, McGrady does take time to tour the front. Often, it is said, with hopes of being drawn into an engagement personally as he has grown bored of his desk-bound service. He longs for the days of his youth when he drank, pillaged, and slaughtered with abandon.

I made a chart of the rank insignia for the Workers' and Farmers' Revolutionary Army of the UASR (Jello_Biafra's Reds!)
(These also apply to the air force)

Ravenclaw, do you have insignia for enlisted ranks as well? Also, how and where on the uniform would the Army/Air Force ranks be worn? Epaulettes? Sleeve cuffs? Collar tabs?

You'll have to ask Jello_Biafra about those. I just used the specs she gave. I assume they would be worn on the shoulders, as in OTL's US Army.

Insignia of the Central Galactic Navy, the ocean-going force of the CGU Armed Forces. The Navy, Space Forces, Coast Guard, and Marines are all administered by the Department of the Navy, and are collectively referred to as the "Naval Service". The ocean, space, and coastal forces share their insignia. This is due to their shared history in old Earth naval forces--including naval aviation as the inception for the Space Forces. For historical reasons, the Marines have similar insignia as the Army and Air Force.
The CGN descends directly from the Terran naval service, deriving from Earth's navies--but especially those of the victorious NATO nations such as the US, UK, France, and Germany who became the core of the UN joint military.

The sleeve insignia here are worn on the Navy Dress Blues and the Blue Service jacket worn over the Navy Duty Uniform. The Navy Dress Whites and the khaki Navy Service Uniform have rank depicted by shoulder straps, identical to Army ranks of the same pay grade.

The Marine Service Uniform, in standard class A, is comprised of an olive-brown jacket and trousers with khaki shirt and tie, much imitative of the ancient American Marines. The UN space combat troops, the forerunners of the Terran Marine Corps, were drawn primarily from the USMC, Royal Marines, and the Russian Naval Infantry. As such, the Imperial Marine Corps and later Galactic Marine Corps borrow many traditions from these antecedents. The most prominent is the emblem of the Globe and Anchor motif borrowed from American and British Marines--modified with a double-headed eagle in the Imperial era and with a single-headed eagle with outstretched wings by the CGU. The Marines continue to have, as they always have, a unique esprit de corps framed around their history and dedicated role as combined-arms shock troops, and the notion that "every Marine, a rifleman". The Marine uniform is largely the same between the ranks, with minor modifications to display rank and status. Battalion-level and staff officers have silver cord straps on their hats, while generals have gold cord as well as stars on their shoulder straps to indicate rank; field marshals have gold leaf embellishment on the hats as well as crossed batons on their shoulder straps.

At furthest left is a Lance Corporal of the 20th Marines Division; as indicated by the winged rocketship pin, he is certified for orbital jumps as part of the division's Orbital Assault Reconnaissance Battalion. To his right is a Gunnery Sergeant in the famed hat of a Drill Instructor; this particular DI has served previously in combat and attained awards for bravery. At middle-left is a Marine Aviation officer, a Lieutenant with an array of medals for bravery and achievement in combat, including twice the Knight's Cross, indicated by the oak-leaf cluster device on the ribbon; Marine aviators, as indicated by the Naval Aviator pin, serve aboard aircraft carriers or amphibious assault vessels, or at naval air stations, as the combat aviation arm of the Marines either in jets, helicopters, or aerodynes. To his right is a Major, serving the staff of the 190th Marines Division. At far right is a Lieutenant General in command of the XII Marine Expeditionary Force, displaying his neck order of the Knight's Cross with swords; an MEF is the basic combined-arms unit of action for the Galactic Marines, stationed in major areas of operations on-world or being shuttled around by large capital spacecraft, and is composed of a Headquarters Regiment, a Marine Division, an Air Wing, an Orbital Drop Brigade, and a Logistics Brigade. At furthest right is Surface Marshal in command of the Marine Strike Group "Magellan", responsible for Marine operations in the Magellanic Clouds; he has many medals for both leadership and bravery, indicating his past as an Orbital Assault Marine officer and his present status in command.

(side note: I considered having Space Marines, or even Marine Aviators, have different colour service uniforms. But upon consideration, it was more consistent with their ethos to have the same service tunic for all Marines, no matter their MOS).

Navy Dress Blue uniform, worn in formal situations by sailors and officers of the ocean-going forces. Virtually every settled world of sufficient population has large oceans to police and secure, given that such large bodies of water are necessary for the conditions to make an Earth-like "garden" world. The Central Galactic Navy is thus is large and important component of domestic military power projection. Other branches of uniformed service wear, by custom, traditional Naval uniforms, such as the Public Health Service and the Coastal Defence Forces.
At left a sailor, a Chief Petty Officer serving with the 72nd Studies and Observations Group, a joint-service special operations unit; this CPO is from the Naval Special Warfare branch, as indicated by his badge of an eagle gripping a trident. To his right is a Lieutenant Commander from the nuclear-powered battleship BBN Argento; like all surface warfare vessels used by the CGN, the Argento is designed for stealth and is equipped with both guns and copious missiles. After him is a Vice Admiral in command of the 14th Fleet Ballistic Missile Squadron, a unit posted on the industrial and urban colony world of Kojima; ballistic missile submarines are the backbone of defence forces, capable of using nuclear force against threats to planetary security. At furthest right is a Grand Admiral in command of the NAVCOM Inner Colonies, and such is the supreme naval commander for the entire Inner Colonies sector of space.

And speaking of Dress Blues, here are the Marines'. Or, more properly, Dress Blacks. Though special dispensation exists for Marines stationed on Earth to wear blue.
At left is a Lance Corporal of the 112th Marine Division, decorated for valour and especially for combat action as indicated by the Close Combat Badge in gold. To his right is a grizzled Staff Sergeant who is a retired veteran of the Great War, as indicated by the purple-ribbon Great War Service Medal; in addition to the several decorations for combat action and for orbital assault, he has a Wound Badge in gold, pinned in an odd manner to also pin his right sleeve to his tunic as his arm was lost in the war. Next to him is rather the opposite, a Captain of the reserve 4th Marine Division, stationed in Louisiana, who has never seen an ounce of proper combat; his tunic is in the blue special uniform for Earth-stationed Marines. To the centre-right is a Colonel in command of a Marine Air Group, a combined force of helicopters, hovercraft, and jets in support of a Marine amphibious forces; he is also a decorated combat pilot, having earned several awards for aerial victories, including the coveted Knight's Cross with swords. Then we have a Marine General, in command of the VIII Fleet Marine Force; while MEF's are the primary operating unit of the Marines, FMF's are administrative commands controlling several MEF's in a given area of responsibility--in this case, the western seas of Epsilon Eridani III. And lastly we have a Surface Marshal in command of all Marine Forces in the Banat district of space colonies, a region rife with civil war and gang violence colloquially known as "Space Mexico"; it is among the most dangerous postings for a general officer, as it is expected that any general is under threat of assassination by one or more space pirate groups.

Great uniforms, but I do have a question--well, questions

What's the purpose of an ocean-based navy? I can understand a coast guard force and armed patrol craft for lifesaving and police duties, but what's the purpose of things like battleships and boomer subs? Are the worlds contested with other powers? And also, have you designs for such warships?

According to the U.S. Navy, it's:

"The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas."

Seems to imply that navies are used for deterrence, assisting ground forces in wartime, and keeping trade routes open.

Yes yes but who are what are they used against. It's been my understanding that the CGU was the only game in town, so to speak.

Much of the existing oceanic navies are held over from the Terran Empire and its allies, which saw massive levels of armed revolt and insurrection in the era preceding the Great War. The use of missile submarines and combat warships were there to deter or limit the attacks of organised rebels on certain worlds. Even after the war, these rebels didn't exactly go away.
In addition, there are a multitude of worlds the CGU rules as protectorates, rather than directly administrating, and sometimes the CGN is used as a force to deter any active resistance by the local inhabitants.
Mind, also, a coastal defence force only goes to a certain range. Beyond that, to deter piracy and smuggling on the open ocean, you'd need a wet navy.

And add to that, expeditionary warfare. If you're invading a planet, you don't want to leave the enemy's oceans free for them to use. Whether for transporting supplies or hosting missile subs for defence against invaders or for surface combatants armed with anti-satellite weapons. You have orbital artillery, yes, but that only goes for far--and has serious accuracy issues. To control the sea and establish nearby fire support and reconnaissance, you need hulls in the water. And even after the enemy garrison surrenders, what's to stop a bushwhacking force from launching attacks from the sea? Your orbital-dropped navy, that's what.

Now, the CGU does pare down on these a bit after the war. But there is a massive Naval establishment, which is highly resistant to being downsized or having their funding cut. So they are going to argue, and have their allies in the legislature argue, as ferociously as possible for keeping their forces exactly where they are. Even if the necessity is diminished in a postwar galaxy.

And also, have you designs for such warships?
Yes.

Yes yes but who are what are they used against. It's been my understanding that the CGU was the only game in town, so to speak.
Yes and no. In the Milky Way, the CGU is the biggest game in town and nominally rules the galaxy with an iron fist. But certain worlds are hotspots for rebel activity, remnant insurrections, and piracy. Add to that the aforementioned protectorates which are controlled rather than directly ruled. And not even close to half of the stars and worlds in the galaxy have been mapped, let alone explored.

Outside of the Milky Way...that's another matter. One of the main conflicts in the story is a massive expeditionary war of conquest in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

No prosthetics technologies?
Prosthetics can be removed, since they're usually hooked into a socket. And in this case, the guy likes to show off his injuries with pride. So he doesn't wear his arm for parades and the like.

And anyway, prosthetics aren't always as simple as all that. Even if you have an amputation, that doesn't mean you can get a prosthesis. It depends on the kind of surgery, how your limb responds to amputation, how your skin and tissue recovers, how it responds to the materials the prosthesis is made of. My wife is an amputee, and has a prosthetic leg, and believe me--it can be a very complicated process.

Personal dress uniforms of Chief Admiral and Chief Marshal August Sask, also known as Augustus IX, King of Poland. A member of the ancient Earth aristocracy, he shunned the spotlight and the privileged lifestyle of the nobility and instead committed his life to a career in the military. He joined the Terran Imperial Spacy Navy at age 16. He was commissioned a Lieutenant Junior Grade and deployed as a weapons officer during the Cruxite War. He experienced a rather rapid ascent as combat took its toll on battlefield commanders, and he found himself as a brevet Captain and then Commodore by age 23. At age thirty one he was commissioned a Rear Admiral, among the youngest in the space forces. However, in 3250 his father died and he inherited the Polish crown, and the honorary colonelcy of the 7th Guards Uhlans or "Polish Lancers" regiment; taking his ceremonial duties seriously, he was placed into the Naval reserve so he could pursue an Army career and command the unit in actuality. He became commander afterwards of a cavalry division, the 12th Guards, and steadily climbed the ranks to a full General. At the outbreak of the Great War, he was reinstated to his Space rank and coterminously held the rank of an Army Colonel-General and of a Space Navy General-Admiral in command of both the 3rd Cavalry Army and the 99th Strike Flotilla. He commanded these forces to great effect in the war, winning several critical victories. Through his direct command of both sorts of forces, he employed a unique combined-arms and joint-service approach to capturing planets. In later campaigns he was among the first generals to employ the Beaumont Doctrine, 'glassing' hostile worlds from orbit without needing to land troops and waste lives. He ended the war a hero, and received promotion to General Field Marshal and Fleet Admiral, and later to Chief Marshal and Chief Admiral.

At left is his "Polish" uniform of the double-breasted lancer's coat with the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle. At middle is his Navy Dress White uniform with the pin for a spaceflight badge and a naval flight officer, along with the star of the White Eagle and the epaulettes of a marshal or high admiral. And at right is his Army parade uniform with various decorations for command and leadership as well as the star of the White Eagle.

As part of the continued militarisation and politicisation of the various organs of government and civil service, the National Humanist government of the late Terran Empire issued service uniforms for all government agencies responsible for policing of any kind, into a standardised cut. This continued, largely unaltered, into the Republic, with one exception.

This is the service uniform of a Park Ranger of the National Park Service, an agency of the Parks and Wildlife Service in the Ministry of the Interior. Park Rangers not only have law enforcement jurisdiction over national parks, but also promote conservation and environmental stewardship, provide emergency services, conduct search and rescue operations in national parks, and act as guides, educators, and heritage interpreters.

Park Rangers, unlike most police agencies, use Army-style insignia. Many police forces used Army insignia until the introduction and usage of National Humanist Party insignia in the civil service as part of the equalisation of Party and State. The NPS managed to resist this adoption and maintained their traditional uniforms.

Uniforms of the Central Galactic Post Office, a major department in the Ministry of Communications. Postal communications are strictly regulated by the central government, rather than being left to local authorities. While mass telecommunications through inter-networked video telephony and holography displaced physical mail many centuries ago, the traditional reference of it as "post" and "mail" remained. The CGPO regulates, monitors, and facilitates electronic and physical mail, as well as transport of packages and freight at low cost. Every citizen is assigned an email address at birth through the Galactic Post.
At left is a postal worker; these include delivery drivers as well as front desk staff, package handlers, and sorting clerks. At right is his superior, the office manager for a branch office where mail is received, packaged, and distributed. Especially since the terrorist crime wave of the 3280s, postal officers are responsible for ensuring that every item of physical mail is checked and monitored for dangerous or subversive content as well as for explosives, poison, or CBRN weapons.
Senior regional officers of the GCPO also partner with its sister department, the Telecom Bureau, and with agents of the Republic Security Department and the Office of Military and Naval Intelligence, to monitor and analyse planetary, interplanetary, and interstellar electronic communications and mail for similar dangerous activity and content.
