Peshwar Lancers Redux: Empire of the Rising Sun

For now the Empire of the Rising Sun had the Upper hand in China. But to even have a hope of holding on the Imperial Army would need the support of a powerful air Force. The Imperial Navy and the Imperial Army were competing for resources. Manchuria's population was now about 800,000 people of Japanese ancestry and 900,000 of Manchurian (Chinese) Both Formosa and Hanin Islands had very large Japanese Populations. The movement of pople back to the Japanese home Islands.

I believe that China's Population is beginning to climb by the 1940's despite the Fall and the continued fighting between forces of the Rising Sun and Chinese Liberation fighters. So I would say that China's population is 130 Million. The Empire of the Rising Sun ( Japan) has a population of about 68 million Japanese, 12 Million Koreans and perhaps 900,000 Formosan's. The bulk of the population is in Japan but there are 3.5 Million Japanese on Formosa, 1 Million on Hanan Island, 800,000 in Manchuria and 1.2 Million in China.

The Empire of the Rising Sun shifted some of its resources to build up a strong Navy. It planned to build carriers so as to dominate the Sea of Japan and to provide air support to operations in China. The Empire had some breathing room as Russia was still recovering from the Fall and then its confrontation with Britain and Hawaii. The fact that the British had the support of the Austro-German Empire helped. Even when the Austro-German Empire fractured becoming Germany and the Austrian Empire things remained close.

As the world shifted from coal to Oil as a fuel the Empire of the Rising Sun's military and Political leaders became concern. Japan had very little oil production capacity. In fact only the large island to the North of the Northern most Japanese Main island had oil production. The Empire had seized it from a nonexistent Russian claim. There were no Russian people on the island and no military forces. The island could provide the Empire with perhaps 12 percent of its oil needs.
With the effect of the Fall easing the Empire had begun to explore Manchuria. The British, Dutch and Hawaiian had access to large amounts of oil. Some militarist urged the use of force to gain the resources that the empire needed but The Commanding General in China had pushed for a re-establishment of relations with the British Empire. He pointed out that there was no reason that Hawaii might not also establish friendly relations with the Empire. The hand of friendship was far better than the clenched fist of war. The Empire could not afford to fight a war in China as well as one against several other powers.

The anti-war forces in the Empire included a number of Army and Navy officers including the Commander in Chief of the Army in China. He pressed hard against the Militarist and survived several assassination attempts. He was utterly convinced that war with the West would bring ruin to the empire. He convinced the Emperor to order peace with the west. This lead to the Hong Kong agreement and a resumption in relations with the British. In the 1950s The empire of the Rising Sun and the Kingdom of Hawaii would reach an accord. Tis would result in the establishment of diplomatic relations and increased trade.

The Imperial Army just was unable to complete the conquest of China. The Imperial Army was stretched to the limit to control the territory that it had. When it attempted to move in Northwest China it found that it had run into an area where there was armed resistance to the Imperial Army. The Russians had been recovering from the Fall and were anxious to once again show that the Empire of the Rising Sun would faced armed opposition.. Russia now trained and armed the Chinese to face the Imperial Army.

Eventually the Empire of the Rising Sun would find itself engaged in a war against Chinese forces seeking to liberate their country from the Empire's grip. The Chinese would receive weapons from the Russians. Russia was in effect using the Chinese as their pawns.

By the 1940s the Empire of the Rising Sun was making technological break troughs and a lot of the weapons that appeared on Our time line began to appear there. Aircraft moved from the rather primitive designs to more advanced but still the designs were behind those of the British and the Hawaiians. Still the improvements meant that the Empire of the Rising Suns Air arm was able to help check the Chinese in their war of National Liberation. It wasn't until the 1950s that Russian designed aircraft and weapons helped to tilt the ba;ance back in favor to the Chinese.

For the next two decades the Chinese wage a war of National Liberation slowly regaining territory from the Empire of the Rising Sun. In the 1960 a cease fire was made between the two parties and The Imperial government withdrew from all of the south except for a Peninsula and the island of Hainan. It was decided that both parties woulld meet in Hong Kong to settle any disputes. Either the British or the Hawaiian would act as mediators. Things appeared to go smoothly until someone in the Chinese government violated the agreement by putting Surface to air missle launchers into a prohibited area. When the Imperial Government brought up this matter the Chinese denied that they had violated the agreement.
Since at this time China was found to be selling weapons to a state that was deemed a supporter of terrorist the Japanese decided to take military action.

It appeared that the new agreement was holding. The Hawaiian Military force said that monitoring stations were on line for all of the Southern Zone and that nearly 50 percent of the eastern zone was done. It would take until sometime in 1980 for the work to be done. Then half of the foce would be sent home and by the end of the year the Hawaiians would be down to 200 personnel.

The DMZ was holding and it appeared that there were fewer problems. The Government of the Republic of China and the Empire of the Rising Sun had held a series of talks regarding the possibility of the transfer of territory from the Empire's control to the control of the Republic of China. It was a matter that if not handled correctly could lead to tensions.

From April 1980 to May 1982 talks were held between the Republic of China and the Empire of the Rising Sun regarding a border adjustment. The Asst Secretary of State for Asian Mainland Affairs from Hawaii oversaw the talks. The talks finally lead to an agreement between the two parties and the Signing of the Treaty of Anwar on May 28th, 1982. It was ratified by the Imperial Government and the Republic of China. The Government of Han however notified the Imperial Government that it would oppose the transferring of any further Han territory to the Republic of China. The Imperial Visroy noted the objection and informed the Emperor and the Prime Minister of the Han position> Han Currently had a five division active duty army which totaled 90,000 men. They had older Imperial Equipment but also had equipment made in Han. Han was believed capable of doubling the size of its miltary. It was hostile to the Republic of China. Is Government was located in Peking.

The Han Army carried out military exercises near the southern border region but away from the DMZ. The Imperial Army had observers attached to the exercise. It was the largest display of Han Military force. Two regular divisions and three reserve divisions carried out the exercise . It was a defense against a simulated attack by a Chinese Invader. The Han troops performed as well as those of the Imperial Army. The Han forces had copies of the Japanese T-61 tank and Han made APCs.
