Pre-contact states? You mean like the Aztecs, Incas and so forth?

Kind of iffy--very little physical evidence would remain and the Spanish weren't very big on accurately recording information.

I'll look around tho.

NationMaster - massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations. NationMaster is a vast compilation of data from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, UN, and OECD. Using the site, you can generate maps and graphs on all kinds of statistics with ease.

U.S. Place Names Gazetteer - Pretty neat site. Only good for US sites, alas, but the information is rather outstanding. It basically puts all the relevant map sites and whatnot on one page. You can search for info on pretty much any community, even the really small ones. I used it a lot for Extinction Event.

StrangeMaps - I love this site. All kinds of weird and funky and bizarre maps from a variety of sources. Only problem is that he seems to be reliant on reader's submissions so it can go weeks before there's a new one.

The Internet Archive - The Internet Archive is a non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. FlightAware - FlightAware offers live flight data, airport information, weather maps and charts, as well as aviation news. As an example of the detail of information, the airport at Bagdad, Arizona is 4575 feet long, 60 feet wide, gets about 2 flights a day on average and at the moment I'm posting this link there's an alert that it has some deer on the runway.
