A near-future map from my Sorrow of the Samurai timeline.
The World, 2008.
The dust has subsided in the near east. After a fierce war, the Persian Republic was repulsed from India. Repetative airstrike from the Indian Air Force and from Anglo-American forces destroyed Persia's military infrastructure. Iraqi forces in Kurdistan were defeated by American and Georgian troops aiding the Kurdish army. By the end of 2005, Iraq was under joint American and British control. From 2006-2007, NATO troops, including German, Austrian, and Gallic forces, pressed on the offensive in the Iraq-Persia border, and forced the Persian troops to retreat. A peace was brokered, and Persia was forced to ceded Afghanistan and parts of Bactria. Additionally, much of their western borderlands were put under the NATO Occupation Zone of Mesopotamia.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Arab Republic has succesfully broken away, and a ceasefire was called. Egyptian troops continue to march steadily through Carthaginia, especially along the coasts. The poorly-armed Carthaginian troops are no match for the Egyptian Army, which is outfitted with modern weapons and technology. They continue to march on to Tunis, in order to stop what is percieved to be a terrorist threat.
To the south, the Antarctic Civil War ended a scant year ago. The Antarctic army, led by General Stephen MacKenzie, crushed the rebels, and UN peacekeeping troops, mainly British and American forces, defeated La Platan forces, and forced La Plata to recognize the independence of Paraguay. Parts of southern La Plata were ceded to Chile. In Europe, Greece peacefully ceded Ionia and Cyprus to Turkey. Unfortunately, the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the European Confederation was marred by outbreaks of ethnic violence and revolts in Serbia and Crotia. Austrian authorities attempt to placate the rival ethnic groups, and struggle to maintain their empire's unity in the face of ethnic squabbling.
In north America, the Tsarist government has peacefully transferred power to a democratic government, and Tsar Michael has retired to his palace in Anchorage. Additionally, Panamanian troops moved into the southern end of the United Provinces of Central America, sparking sanctions from the United Nations, and a blocade by American naval forces. The AIMC have greatly benefitted from the introduction of the Colt M20 Advanced Infantry Combat Rifle, the service version of the prototype MR-C. The new weapon replaces the old M17 rifles, liscence-built versions of the German G4 rifle (OTL's G36). American Imperial Marines utilize this new firearm in raids on Panamanian supply points, as part of the North American Defense Pact agreements.

The USA is a barely-democratic one-party state under the Republican Party, which occupies Venezuela, Mosul, and props up a faltering puppet in Afghanistan.
The European Union's disputes over integration have led to two "Zones", one much more integrated than the other. Britain and Denmark remain outside of the integrated EU thanks to right-wing opposition. The outer zone is much less integrated, and Morocco and Tunisia remain in both the AU and the outer EU.
Somalia's Islamist government refused to accept Puntland and Somaliland's recognition, and pulled out of the AU when Putland and Somalilan joined.
Saudi Arabia fell apart, and the Chinese Communists lost their grip on power.

A failed Alien invasion in the early 21st century plunged the world into chaos and lead to the consolidation of much of the worlds states into massive powerblocks. With 2050. America has been turned into a monarchy and those African superfeds have merged into one large federation.
2008 During the Olympic games Taiwan declares itself independent of the PRC.
2009 Thailand faces economic collapse, and is saved by Japanese assitance. The countries sign an economic alliance creating the Asian-Pacific Alliance.
In 2011 the Sudan and Chad had a brief war during America and its Democratic Wars in Cuba. Sudan was quickly over run thanks to European help, and the large influx of refugees boosting the army. The UN poured money into the country, making it still third world but on the rise with new farmland, and resources. N. Korean Generals after much internal problems asks for international assistance.
2012 The EU decides to stop all traffic to Eastern Europe nations not already in the EU. It ends with all European nations economically connected, and secure. N. korea begins reunifaction talks with S. Korea.
2014 N. Korea and S. Korea are now Korea. America sets up Democracy in Hati, and Cuba.
2015 Mongolia announces the discovery of large natural gas deposit as well as more oil wells. After the Mongolia President dies in his sleep, China offers to send in troops to help the "government transition" Russia does the same. Mongolia quickly disappears off the map.
2017 Brazil announces ethanol infused with hydrogen, making Brazil the first nation to master hydrogen based fuels.
2018 The EU and APA add more nations to their roosters allowing both Europe and Asia to challenge the USA, and growing Chinese world power.
2019 Brazil sells hyrdogen ethanol technology to China inexchange for military hardware. America demands it for all nations. Brazil refuses, and soon is attacked by the US. However the years of costly wars allows Brazil, and her new and improving military to stop the US advance.
2021 Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uraguay join Brazil in the conflict against America.
2022 Brazil absorbs her allies in exchange for energy technology and the massive income of aide from Russia, China, and various other nations. California declares itself independent along with Neveda. A small conflict occurs but by this time AMerica is stretched thin and ends the war in South America, and with California. California grants Mexico some of the south in exchange for promises to end immigration.
2024 Russia begins retaking former Soviet lands. Austrialia and New Zealand ask to join the APA.
