Benjamin "Beast" Butler might be a better candidate for a more equitable Reconstruction than either Hamlin or Rosecrans. Butler actually turned down the VP slot and Johnson was offered it afterwards-you can look at Butler's post-war political career to get an idea of how he'd handle Reconstruction

Honestly, I tried to find contemporary references and I found some that used the modern spelling, and others that use the archaic spelling. I went with the archaic spelling (because you are right, that is a bit of an AH cliche) largely because I love alternate transliterations
