Third Parties Galore
<1968 - 1976>
1972: The Robber or the Racist?

With Congress certifying him as President, President Nelson Rockefeller got to work despite many Socialists mumbling of "Robbyfeller" who apparently "stole" the election from the man who many Socialists held high, Governor Richard Nixon of California. The Burmese War continued into President Rockefeller's first term to the disappointment of his anti-war supporters. Progressive policies slowly became more socially-oriented, angering conservatives, and the "New Frontier" programs continued with the historic passing and implementation of the universal healthcare system "AmeriCare" with bipartisan support, much to right-wing anger at "socialized medicine".

Barry Goldwater declared in 1971 "If people ask me about this a decade hence, I shall say 'I did not leave the Progressive Party, the Progressive Party left me'." and formed the Libertarian Party in protest at the Progressives' "growing socialist tendencies". Many Progressives of a libertarian bent joined the Libertarians, including Senator Ronald Reagan of California and Governor Roger MacBride of Vermont. Goldwater chose television producer Tonie Nathan of Oregon as his running mate as many prominent Libertarians wished to focus on ensuring re-election as Libertarians.

Rockefeller nevertheless declared his intention to seek re-election, and easily won re-nomination, electing to continue the ticket with Vice-President William Scranton of Pennsylvania. The bitter anti-war voters finally had a choice in Socialist George McGovern [who chose Representative Shirley Chisholm of New York, one of the few Socialists willing to be the bottom of a seemingly-doomed ticket] while the AIP, in a bid to expand outside the South chose Governor Happy Chandler of Kentucky and Senator Evan Mecham of Arizona. Louisiana still held out against the AIP as the Populists, led by Governor John McKeithen of Louisiana and Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas slowly chipped away at AIP support in the Deep South as the AIP increasingly focused on the North and on opportunities to become a "national" party instead of a "Southern" party, like the Populists and States' Rights were.

upload_2016-12-14_4-29-42-png.299481

In the end, Chandler got an impressive second place as McGovern collapsed in support [but won his native South Dakota easily] and voters afraid of the possibility of an AIP victory voted overwhelmingly Rockefeller, his so-called "moderate majority". Rockefeller would be the last nominee to win an outright electoral majority, as the rigamarole following the 1976 election would be the final straw to an exasperated American people tired of an archaic electoral system so transparently unsuited to the fragmented multi-partisan politics of modern-day America.

Figured I'd help inaugurate the new thread with some boxes from The Lost Children. First, the Treaty of Adelaide.
___

The Treaty of Adelaide, commonly called the Troop-sharing Agreement or TSA, is one of the most important treaties of the Alliance of Terran States, second to only Accra itself. It established the practice of “troop-sharing,” where Alliance member countries that still maintain national militaries “share” these forces with the Alliance for military operations. This was particularly important in the Alliance’s early years. In the era leading up to, of, and after the 2108 Colonial Rebellion, dissatisfaction with the UEG and the UEG military was high amongst Earth’s nations. This led to a decrease in forces (apart from the Navy) that would have crippled the 2108 war effort; were it not for Earth’s most militarily powerful countries such as India, China, the USA, and others contributing their own forces, the rebellion might not have ended with a UEG victory.

Even when the UEG was reorganized into the Alliance with the Treaty of Accra, with many complaints about the UEG military addressed, distrust was still high. Thus, the troop-sharing agreement became vital to Alliance military occupations, especially the groundside occupations and counter-insurgencies in the restive eastern colonies. The importance of the TSA receded somewhat as trust in the Alliance, and in its institutions such as the military, grew, but many of the forces that see deployments to the Alliance hot zones are national forces temporarily “seconded” to Alliance command.

The Treaty of Adelaide was signed by twenty-five nations, the majority of Earth’s nations that maintained national militaries of any significance. Of particular note are the eleven major parties (as defined by the treaty); as of 2162, the largest contributors of national forces to the current war in the eastern colonies are the United States, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, and Poland, with large contingencies from the rest of the “Big Eleven” and smaller contributions from the other fourteen signatories.

Treaty of Adelaide.png

And, some storied military units utilized under the above.
___

The 1st Marine Division is one of the United States of America’s most storied and decorated units, participating in the major wars of the 21st century, and in all major Alliance wars of the 22nd, under the tenets of the Treaty of Adelaide.

Several of 1MARDIV’s battles of the mid- to late-21st and 22nd centuries have ascended to mythic status alongside other battles of its venerable history such as Okinawa, Inchon, Chosin Reservoir, the Tet Offensive, and Fallujah. The Siege of Pyongyang in the Second Korean War and the Battle of Karachi of the Subcontinental War are of particular fame, the latter earning the division of its nicknames, the “Devils of Karachi.”

In the UEG/Alliance era, the first battles of Ashoka and Hard Landing have joined the mythos of both the division and the USMC at large; in the current rebellion, the battles of Savannakhét Mai, the Mariposa campaign, and Operation Swordbreaker seem like they will join the legends of the Old Breed.
___

Polish GROM is one of the best top-tier special operations forces in the entire Alliance. The Polish Space Forces are highly regarded by their peers, particularly the Special Forces which GROM falls under; the unit has seen action in all of the Alliance’s major conflicts. GROM in particularly is lauded for its role in Operation Iron Resolve, a component part of Operation Swordbreaker, where alongside US Navy SEALs and Alliance Special Tasks, GROM participating in the raid that killed Ashokan rebel leader Justin Kincaide. Iron Resolve and Swordbreaker are credited with being the major reasons why large-scale fighting came to a close on Ashoka a few weeks later.

Hubert Humphrey and the Sparkmen from Alabama

There is no way by 1960 that the national Democratic Party would allow an avowed segregationist like Sparkman (who had both signed the Southern Manifesto and refused to vote for the Civil Rights Act of 1957) to head the national ticket and no way that Nixon wouldn't completely hammer Sparkman outside of the south as a result, regardless of Sparkman's stances on most other issues.

There's also the issue of Humphrey, who burst onto the national scene for making an impassioned plea for the Democratic Party to add a civil rights plank to its platform, deciding to effectively destroy his own political career by accepting Sparkman's offer to run on his ticket.

I'm fully aware that it's not a very likely scenario; I merely came up with the idea and thought it'd be fun to put it into writing. In the scenario I drew up I think the Hube would probably get the nod compared to Kennedy.

2016 US Senate Map.jpg

The election of Bernie Sanders had profound down ballot consequences, particularly when he pushed for the 50-state strategy with interim DNC chair Paul G Kirk. Alan Greyson won election over Marco Rubio, thanks in part to Rubio's disastrous presidential election and Greyson portraying him as a part-time senator. Tammy Duckworth won over Mark Kirk, due to the senator's bad campaign and racist comments about Duckworth's ancestry. Caroline Fayard defeated John Kennedy at the second round election, thanks to aggressive campaigning by the Louisiana Democratic party, and Bernie who came to the state and did a rally for Fayard arguing that: "while she and I might not agree on everything, I can not think of a greater voice for Louisiana than Caroline Fayard." Jason Kander defeated Roy Blunt, making it the first time in forty years that both Missouri Senators were Democrats. Catherine Masto kept retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's seat blue, while also being the first Latina to be elected to the Senate. After a close race Russ Feingold won election in Wisconsin in a re-mate of the 2010 election when he lost to Ron Johnson. Kate McGinty beat Pat Toomy, who was running for a second term, making it the first time in 69 years that two Democrats were elected to the Senate from Pennsylvania. Following the controversy surrounding the North Carolina Transgender Bathroom bill, along with the growing annoyance among moderate and liberal NC residents that the conservative lawmakers representing/in charge of their state did not represent the true views of North Carolinians, led to Deborah Ross being elected to the Senate. New England moderate Republican Kelly Ayoate was defeated for re-election by governor Maggie Hassan.
On the Republican side renowned moderate bridge-building Ohio republican Rob Portman defeated former governor Ted Strickland for a second term. Rand Paul, libertarian and former presidential candidate, defeated mayor of Lexington Jim Grey by a close amount. Former Indiana Senator Even Bayh lost to incumbent Representative Todd Young, many progressive pundits argued that he lost because Bayh was a classic corporatist Democrat who did not support Bernie's campaign promises.
Plus the two incumbent Independents, Democrats won back control of the Senate with 54 seats (following Bernie's resignation on December 21st following the EV vote, the sitting governor Peter Shumlin appointed Sue Minter to the Senate seat, during the senate election in 2018 election Minter won reelection to a full term, becoming the first woman elected to Congress from Vermont).

House

2016 House Election Map.png

Following the election Democrats won control of the House, Nancy Pelosi was returned as Speaker of the House, while Paul Ryan, instead of being made House Minority Leader returned to the House Ways and Means Committee. Prominent freshmen Democratic members of the House include: Zephyr Teachout, prominent candidate for Governor of New York and political activist. Chase Iron Eyes, Native American lawyer/activist from North Dakota. Pramila Jayapal, the first indian-american woman to serve in the House and a civil rights activist. Daniel Wilk, representative from Nebraska's 2nd, who won election thanks to Bernie's victory in his district. Prominent Republican freshmen include: Liz Cheney, daughter of former VP Dick Cheney. Jennifer González, a member of the New Progressive Party who caucused with the republicans and would go on to be a great voice for Puerto Rican issues after statehood. The Democrats also won seats in Nevada, New Hampshire, Texs, California, and Florida, winning primarily republican seats with progressives.

Governorships
2016 US Gubernatorial infobox.png

2016 Gubernatorial elections.png

Thanks to the growing opposition within North Dakota and North Carolina towards their incumbent Republican governors actions (regarding Native Americas and Trans people respectively), coupled with Bernie's wins in Missouri and West Virginia, allowed them to win all four of those governorships. Indiana's John Gregg won a close election, despite the prominence of Mike Pence on the national ticket and Trump winning Indiana the state with 56% of the vote.
In New Hampshire and Vermont the selection of not very popular candidates, coupled with the length of term of the previous democratic administrations of both states, allowed the moderate republican candidates to win easily.

Jesus christ, this is a massive wank.

Let me get this straight, Democrats win a Senate race in Louisiana where the margin was around 60-40; yet can't even get Evan Bayh to win (was he too right-wing for you?)
The GOP's gerrymandering in the House fails... somehow...?

Does this mean I can make a wank series now? I mean it seems to be all the rage here.

spies.png

The Oxford Circus was a ring of spies recruited by the Soviet Union from the student body of Oxford University, who operated as saboteurs and intelligence operators for the Soviet Union through World War II and into the First Cold War until their liquidation in 1974. The ring was initially identified by a key member, then Liberal Party Leader Jeremy Thorpe (cryptonym: Wells), and following a series of arrests and a detailed investigation, the wider membership of then Environment Secretary Tony Crosland (cryptonym: Poland), Home Secretary Roy Jenkins (cryptonym: Reagent), Chancellor of the Exchequer Denis Healey (cryptonym: Argyll), former Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party Edward Heath (cryptonym: John Prince's), editor of The Times William Rees-Mogg (cryptonym: Holles), and Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies Dick Taverne (cryptonym: Harewood) were uncovered. An eight operative and groups handler, Bakerloo, remains unknown

Despite popular belief, the groups Codename, Oxford Circus, does not reflect the fact that all the members were students of Oxford University, but instead was taken from the Station of the same name, with cryptonym's taken from the roads branching from Oxford Street. There is some debate over when the group was formed, however, there is a broad consensus supported by the testimony of Harold Wilson shortly before his murder that Healey and Heath were likely recruited as early as 1938. It is also agreed that the group can be divided into two distinct periods, those recruited pre-War (Crosland, Healey, Jenkins, and Heath), and those recruited post-War (Rees-Mogg, Taverne, and Thorpe). Both groups were unaware of the others existence and identity until liquidation. Due to this, the former group is often referred to as Trinity Circus and the latter Hilary Circus.

Some debate, however, continues over the size and extent of Oxford Circus. Due to the divided nature of the organisation, some believe that a third or even fourth group exist, connecting fellow Oxford alumni such as then Canadian Finance Minister John Turner and Australian Shadow Minister of Labour Malcolm Fraser. Then British Prime Minister Harold Wilson was also suspected to be a member of the group when the identity of the operative Poland was unknown; suspicion would be dropped following his murder at the hands of Tony Crosland, who was in turn killed by Wilson's secretary, Marcia Williams. Williams would also be uncovered as a Soviet spy, though was part of an operation unrelated to the Oxford Circus. Others accused of being members of the alleged third group (often referred to as Michaelmas) were Shadow Secretary of State for Industry Michael Heseltine, New Statesman Editor Anthony Howard, and Director of Programming at Thames Television Jeremy Isaacs. John Stonehouse, who was accused of spying in 1969, was also arrested. Whilst not charged with criminal activity relating to the Oxford Circus, it was confirmed that he had in actual fact been a spy for Czechoslovakia by the Security Services.

Following the group's liquidation, Thorpe, Healey, and Rees-Mogg would be arrested and sentenced to 23-29 years imprisonment, as well as being stripped of awards and membership of their political parties. Crosland was shot and killed by Marcia Williams whilst fleeing No. 10 following his murder of Harold Wilson. Taverne was killed in a car accident whilst trying to flee to the coast from his home. Jenkins would evade arrest and resurfaced as a biographer in East Germany. He would return to England to face prosecution following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Heath would go missing; sources at the KGB would claim that Heath was killed by the crew of a Soviet Micro-Submarine sent to collect him and his co-conspirators. Others would claim the former Prime Minister was brought back to Russia and started a new life as a lecturer at the Far Eastern Federal University, a yachtsman on the Ariel Sea, or that he had taken his private yacht and was killed in a North Sea storm whilst attempting to flee. He was declared legally dead in 2005.

The revelation of the Oxford Circus would have a profound impact on British Politics- with a General Election only ten days away when the initial revelation was made, and Healy, Heath, Jenkins, and Rees-Mogg outed in the week following, the result would see a heavily fragmented and paranoid Parliament where fringe parties, such as the National Front, surged in seat numbers whilst the Liberals were almost wiped out south of the Scottish border, and Labour and the Conservatives saw their own numbers erode. With Wilson dead, Thorpe imprisoned, Heath missing, and seat numbers making forming a stable Government almost impossible, there was much speculation over who would lead the next Government. Facing a political crisis and economic turmoil unparalleled by anything ever witnessed before in British history, a National Unity Government of All Parties would be formed under the helmsman ship of Conservative Peer Harold Macmillan, the Earl of Stockton, who would lead the nation until the 1977 General Election and the ascension of his Home Secretary Ariey Neave. The period following the revelation of the spy ring would retrospectively be referred to as 'The British Red Scare'.

Well you can't forget that there is a huge turnout, and a lot of people are much more positive of the presidential election than in RL. Plus the fact that in reality Caroline Fayard didn't win in the first round, and she was polling much higher than the democrat who actually won (and then went on to loose). And with Evan Bayh, he was a terrible candidate who was never gonna win, coupled with the fact that the governor of his state was on the Republican ticket.
Hope that cleared some things up :D

Bayh lost by like ten points after starting out with a twenty point lead, he was a complete incompetent.
