I have to go with Edbert, he was quite succesfull in bring Wessex to the top of the latter. Though, I have to admit, I always like Mercia, and Northumbria more and thus liked Oswald of Northumbria, and Offa of Mercia more.

Alfred did some very difficult things simultaneously; regained a kingdom lost, expanded it, made his possesions secure with his Brughs, reformed the army and social organisation, enhanced learning, the list goes on. He didn't just win a few battles he was a complete ruler who performed across the entire spectrum.

Also founded the Royal Navy ( I don't know if he called it that though) to fight the Vikings. This is obviously an important achievement.
