WW3 TL...slightly ABSish but who cares...

World War Three Timeline: ABS(ish) but who Cares:

(maps will follow shortly. and i know this is about as far a stretch as one can make without ABS powers but who cares)

2012-2016: four years of severe droughts strike Asia and Eastern Europe followed intermittently by three major earthquakes killing the better part of three hundred thousand people in central China and Japan.

2013: USA is in the midst of the second “great depression”. Canada is frantically trying to keep it’s own economy afloat as is the EU.

2015: Mongolia joins Chine’s “economic confederation” in return for large shipments of food to its starving citizens. N. Korea strengthens ties with China. Kazakhstan joins the economic confederation later that same year.

2016: three major terrorist attacks strike the capital of India, the worst being a “dirty-bomb”. Estimated death toll at sixty thousand. Blame falls upon Pakistan. Boarder raids escalate into minor clashes as both sides mobilize forces along their boarder. The new leader of China (which will later become known as the Economic Confederation then the Eastern Confederation) strengthens ties with India by giving back small regions of disputed land for nothing but promises of “peace” in return.

2017: the same droughts that have been hitting Asia and Europe hard, begin to strike N. America. Food shortages begin to be felt across both the US and Canada.

2017: November: Iran joins the E. Confederation as the last of the EU and Canadian troops are withdrawn from Afghanistan. Before the end of the year the last US troops will be withdrawn from Iraq.

2018: US government struggles to keep the country together and in peace as food shortages begin to affect the population like never before. Thousands begin raiding farms for food, worsening the situations. Riots are put down forcefully.

2018: August: E. Confederation signs an non-aggression pact with the island nations of the south pacific (Australia obviously excluded).

2018: September: Eastern Europe is feeling the effects of the years of drought. Russia is beginning to recover from her years of drought and sends aids to several Baltic states and in return demands their allegiance in the years to follow in her own “union of sorts.”

2018: December: in return for massive amounts of food aid, the promise of basic necessities, and the such, a pro-E. Confederation revolution breaks out in Uzbekistan.
E. Confederation troops quickly move in to help ensure “peace” and “prosperity” for the populous while strengthening ties to the E. Confederation. Both the EU and the Russian Alliance watch on nervously.

2019: the year it all began… (stay tuned for what happens next )

Part Two:

2019: This year dawns with trouble brewing in the small mountain nation of Nepal as another rebel faction fights to gain control of this country after nearly two decades of turmoil. In order to “liberate” the Nepalese people from their new “oppressors” the E. Confederation forces move in from the North and Indian troops from the south. After several weeks of fierce fighting in the mountain passes E. Confederation troops and Indian troops link up in a joint assault on Katmandu. After two days of fierce fighting the capital falls and the rebel forces surrender. Nepal is divided into two, the low southern regions joining India and the mountainous regions joining the E. Confederation.

2019: May: Bhutan’s leader willing joins the E. Confederation in return for the ability to remain supreme governor of the region.

2019: After yet another season of devastating storms rock Burma, killing untold thousands, Burma is convinced to join the Indian Union while retaining ‘special’ governing rights over their region. The Indian Union fund massive “make work” programs in their new state, building roads, hospitals, schools, better housing, and a large industrial style farming system that will increase food productions in the region nearly three fold within three years.

2019: Russian aid to its “allies” in Eastern Europe dwindles as drought once again begins to hit the country. Small-localized uprisings are put down. Thousands imprisoned or sent to eastern work camps. Resentment towards their new Russian masters quickly begins to build.

2020: localized civilian uprisings are forcefully put down by the US government. Food shortages continue to plague the country. Canada’s economy continues to stall.

2020: March First: Ukraine tries to leave the Russian Union. Russians respond by bringing in two army groups, one from the northeast and one up through Crema, in order to forcefully halt the rebellion as quickly as possible. EU sends aid in the form of money, supplies, and ten thousand soldiers (mostly from Germany and Britain). The Russians are halted on the eastern outskirts of Kiev.

2020: March Fifth: Belarus and Lithuania also declare independence from the Russian Union.

2020: mid March: Russian troops sweep about a hundred kilometers into Belarus from Russia and their allied state of Latvia. Lithuanian and EU troops along natural barriers quickly halt them. A Russian attack northeastwards from their Baltic holding into Lithuania is quickly halted as Poland threatens military action upon Russia if the assault is not halted. A stalemate ensues in western Lithuania as a slow grind by the Russians in the east ensues.

2020: last day of March: EU demands Russian withdrawal or face combined Military action against them. E. Confederation declares their support for the EU. Russia knows that after nearly a decade of drought and internal trouble, many of the countries will not be able to live up to their threat.

2020: April seventh: Minsk falls.

2020: April ninth: Russian troops encircle Kiev and drive the defending forces back almost fifty kilometers. The siege of Kiev has begun.

Part Three:

2020: April ninth: Russian troops encircle Kiev and drive the defending forces back almost fifty kilometers. The siege of Kiev has begun.

In the east resentment towards the E. Confederation from the S. Koreans continues to build as N. Korea receives massive amounts of food and military aid.

This month if also marked by the withdrawal of the last five hundred US soldiers from S. Korea and the majority of forces stationed in Japan. The forces are needed to keep peace at home and guard along the Mexican boarder. Trouble once more begins to flare between Mexico and the US. Both governments play-down how tense the situation actually over the boarder actually is.

2020: April thirteenth: Poland sends ten thousand soldiers to aid Lithuania and another five thousand to aid Belarus. An additional four thousand German and a thousand French troops are sent to aid the Ukrainians as their lines begin to falter and crumble.

2020: April twenty-eighth: This day is marked by the surrender of Lithuania and the simultaneous capture of the black sea port of Odessa by a surprise amphibious assault. The capture of this port cuts of much of the key aid being sent in from Britain.

2020: May fifth: after several weeks of intense negotiations Vietnam (who has suffered for over a decade through first two years of massive starvations, then three major earthquakes followed by two civil wars) agrees to join the E. Confederation if several key terms are met by both sides:

Vietnam: 1. New hospitals and schools to be built in 22 large key cities. 2. Within five years for a new countrywide transit improvement (both by road and rail) 3. The rebuilding of two vital airports (damaged heavily during the 2015 earthquake). 4. Current government will retain regional control over the province while remaining a state of the E. Confederation.

E. Confederation: 1. Total mobilization of their limited resources in a time of war. 2. Use of their pre-existing military bases and equipment. 3. Within three years to supply the E. Confederation with one hundred thousand soldiers.

2020: May seventh: Vietnam officially becomes a province of the E. Confederation.

2020: May ninth: a massive terrorist attack strikes the Indian city of Jammu which lies close to the northern Pakistan boarder, forty thousand civilians and over a hundred soldiers are killed. India uses this excuse to begin mobilizing thirty thousand troops.

2020: late May: terrorists in the northern Punjab region of Pakistan are “found” to be guilty of launching this devastating attack. India gives Pakistan until the end of the month to turn over two thousand men and woman India claims to be terrorists or face the consequences. E. Confederation openly declares their support for India.

2020: June first: Pakistan refuses India’s threats and begins mobilizing small forces along the boarder of that region.

2020: June second: Indian troops advance and begin occupying strategic points along the boarder in what it calls its “Defense line” India claims this to be necessary in order to halt further attacks and loss of Indian lives.

story is moving in the right direction, it looks like the E. confederation will play the EU and the Russians against one another. Do you think the US and Mexico border tensions will eventually turn into border skirmishes or a flat out war?

Actually, Tls and scenarios is for long, completed works. If you refined this and merged the first few posts, then it could probably qualify.

Out of curiosity, why did Sweden leave the EU while Norway joined?

This sounds mighty similar to the scenario in the series Dragon's Fury: War against the West. In the series, China, India, and the Grand Islamic Republic allies against the west to take over the world. The USN is unable to contain them because of a radical Chinese sea weapon that changes the rules of sea warfare. You can read the entire series here for free in pdf form.

I like this TL. Seems like Pakistan won't stand much of a chance between the combined might of the E. Confederation and India.
Am I correct in assuming that the US is no longer a superpower (or is at least slightly less powerful than the EU, E. Confederation, and Russia)? It seems like they can't be if Mexico can give them enough trouble to merit recalling troops. Or has Mexico just greatly increased in power?

thanxs...more will come soon. As for the USA, it still is "powerful" but after nearly a half a decade of drought and the second depression, they are struggling too much with internal affairs to worry much about foreign problems halfway around the world.

Part Four:

2020: June sixteenth: After a week of heavy fighting with several thousand Indian casualties, the southern Indian army has reached the Indus river, securing several key bridges and river crossings. In the north Indian troops lay siege to the capital city of Islamabad.

2020: June twenty-first: This later would be later become known as “Judgment Day”. At one-thirty local time, the retreating Pakistan forces used three small tactical nuclear weapons on two advancing Indian armies and a third of one of the fortified boarder town. Estimated Indian military casualties: eighteen thousand. Civilian: thirty thousand.

The world looked on in horror. Many were sure this was the beginning of a nuclear holocaust. Millions were sure they would not wake up in the morning. Many were sure the sky would soon be painted black with ash. To the worlds surprise the Indians to not launch a return nuclear assault.

The US immediately condemns the attack within the hour but is able to do little else they demand trade embargos against the country. The EU watches on in horror.

Instead India uses this as a propaganda tool and by the end of the month has four hundred thousand soldiers advancing into Pakistan. In response to the small-scale nuclear strike E. Confederation and Iran openly declare war on Pakistan.

2020: June twenty-fifth: One hundred thousand E. Confederation soldiers attack down from the north while thirty thousand Iranian soldiers attack up from the southeast.

2020: July first: Islamabad falls after a week of heavy bombing and artillery. Indian troops ravage the capital, killing and looting as they go in retribution to the nuclear strike.

2020: July eight: with two thirds of the country now occupied, Pakistan surrenders and the manhunt for its leaders ensues. A ten million dollar reward is placed on their heads.

2020: July sixteenth: except for the most remote towns and villages, the final remaining regions of Pakistan are conquered and brought into the “fold”. The country will quickly be divided between the three powers, with little over half going to India, while the northern quarter being granted to the E. Confederation. The rest will be granted to Iran.

2020: August first: the war between the break away provinces and the Russian Economic Union grins into a bloody stalemate.

2020: August sixth: Two Russian bombers accidentally strike a Polish boarder town mistaking it for a Ukrainian City. Fifty-two Polish civilians are killed and another two hundred wounded. In response Poland gives an ultimatum to Russia, ordering them to withdraw by the tenth or face military action by Poland.

2020: August tenth: Russian refuses to withdraw its forces from Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania. Poland declares a war of liberation against the Russian Economic Union.

2020: August eleventh: a two-pronged attack is launched by the Polish army into occupied Lithuania. The EU openly supports Poland’s actions. Three days later the EU will declare war on the Russian Economic Union.
