Radical Republicans begin to grow more power..... Reconstruction is a lot harsher. Insurrection in the south against Union occupation. Another round of violence possibly more rebellions and the like.

Lee, Davis, etc. executed for their leadership of the rebellion, anyone suspected of being involved in the assinations executed or imprisoned for life, plus a much harsher reconstruction. Was Wade President pro tempore of the Senate in 1865?

The term "harsh" in relation to the Congressional reconstruction tends to come from people who disliked giving human, political and civil rights to former slaves.
Under the law as it then was there would have been a Presidential election in the fall of 1865. A radical repbulican would probably have won. It is possible that there would have been wholesale confiscation of land from the people who benefited from one of Americas' worst human rights abuses and started a treasonous rebellion which caused such destruction. It is possible that by 1900 the US would have become the Global model for multi racial democracy, |

There is an essay for this. The government sets up a regency, as power at this point doesnt automatically defer to the House Speaker. Raving mobs storm Lee's prison and break his arm, but he escapes, and gives his blessing to a Confederate guerrilla campaign against the north. This campaign besets the next President and drives him almost to insanity. The South secedes eventually....
