Has anyone here read Larry Bond's "Vortex" ? It sets in an alternate timeline during nineties period. Apartheid regime system in South Africa still exists and with a delibrate assasination of whole SA goverment a Hitler-like president and extreme right ministers come into power and suddenly whole SA becomes a Yugoslavia-like battlefield. It was very good especially in battalion type unit engagements , special forces raids , nuclear and chemical attacks.

It was pretty good, one of the better books set in SA that I've read. I think a thread about Red Storm Rising was hijacked into a Vortex thread a few months ago, so have a look for that to get the guys opinions etc.

I liked it a lot, although it was written in a time when it was unlikely that the USSR would support such an adventure. Still, it was a damn good read... so was Red Phoenix and Cauldron. After these three excellent novels, Bond got into writing anti-terrorist novels which I didn't like so much. Still, his first three were great. I still have a copy of Red Phoenix signed by him....

I liked it, I just wish Bond had written more. Cauldron, Red Phoenix, and Vortex were all excellant IMO.
