What book/series should I read next? (Sorta a poll)

Now that Homeward Bound is out (or will be out soon), I'm gonna read every single Worldwar/Colonization book AGAIN, then read Homeward Bound. But after that, what should I read next?

I'm only now starting to do AH again, the only AH books I've read are the Worldwar/colonization ones along with Days of Infamy (I've read more then that, but those are the only ones fresh in my head).

So to help me choose the next series I read, rank the following books/series on a scale of 1 to 10, one with the highest average points wins (rank all of those you have read):

Phil Roth's Plot against America
HT's Guns of the South
SM Stirling's Island in the Sea of Time trilogy:
HT's Great War trilogies

I'd go back to basics. Try De Camp's LEST DARKNESS FALL, Moore's BRING THE JUBILEE, and Spinrad's THE IRON DREAM.

I agree, I've enjoyed some of Stirling's other work but I didn't even finish the first volume of that one - a major disappointment. I think he spent too much time on uninteresting detail and sub-plots, and lost my attention.

Which prompts a further thought - a lot of people seem to think that novels have to be huge to be worth bothering with these days. Some of the long ones are good, but many of my favourites are quite short.

Johnny and the Bomb-Pratchett-funny children's book.
The Proteus Operation-Hogan-WWII commando raid book.
The Coming of the Quantum Cats-Pohl-near future doppelganger book.
Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen-Piper-gunpowder and arquebus book.
The Man Who Folded Himself-Gerrrold-inheiriting a time travel belt.

I would certainly read what I consider to be Turtledove's best two books - Guns of The South (AH plus sci fi) and How Few Remain which underpins the Great War series and is a lot better than it.

I'd also recommend Napoleon Disentimed and Elleander Morning; whilst both have minor sci fi elements in how they work, both explore fascinating alternate histories and are extremely readable.

Whatever happened to Fatherland in people's discussions ? I have also just purchased Turtledove's 'In The Presence of Mine Enemies' which has a similar theme

FATHERLAND is crap as AH, NAPOLEON DISENTIMED is interesting, if nothing more, ELLEANDER MORNING has nice brothel sequences and some nice snippets from AH novels and films, but otherwise- it didn't make sense to me.

Grey Wolf's recommendations are good (however, I have not yet read Elleander Morning) insofar. I would add "The Two Georges" and "Alternate Generals volume 1".

Lest Darkness Falls is a must.
Don't forget the other Piper's short stories about ATLs
The Plot against America is very good for the first three quarters of the book, but ends up in a very disappointing way. Looks like Roth got bored with the book.
Contrary to a lot of other people here, I liked the Island in the Sea of Time trilogy
