Timeline Challenge #1: The Eugenics Wars

Subject: Timeline Challenge #1: The Eugenics Wars View this article only Newsgroups: rec.arts.startrek.tech Date: 2003-05-28 16:34:59 PST I have a challenge for those of us primarily interested in the "historicity" of Star Trek. I am primarily interested in the individual fan's interpretation of various key or turning points in Star Trek's fictional history. Challenge #1: The Eugenics Wars- We know from the episode "Space Seed" and Star Trek The Wrath of Khan that Eugenics Wars were fought between 1992 and 1996. Key figures in this conflict were possibly quite numerous, but only one figure has a resounding "choke-hold" on the historicity of this subject, Khan Noonien Singh. We have prescious few on-screen statements regarding this global conflict. We know that from 1992-1996, Singh ruled one-quarter of planet Earth from Asia to the Middle East, and the he was the most powerful and influential of an unknown number of eugenically engineered supermen. We know from The Animated Series that a Stavos Keneclius played some part during this conflict but what exactly is open for speculation. We know that sometime during 1993, eugenics supermen siezed power seemingly at once on Earth in some forty nations. It was at this point, that what has become known as the Eugenics Wars began, and according to Spock's own words on the subject this was "the era of the last of your so-called world wars" with "whole populations being bombed out of existence" with Earth "on the verge of another Dark Ages" Technologically, we know that during this period, the DY-100 Class spaceship was the most advanced space vessel of the time. We know that following the ceasation of hostilities during the war, Khan Singh either escaped aboard S.S. Botany Bay or was forcibly exiled from Earth orbit at least and recovered at least two centuries later by Enterprise (NCC-1701). Onto the challenge. Come up with a speculative timeline detailing the events leading up the Eugenics Wars and their conclusion. You may use any reference materials at your disposal, but I would strongly urge you to limit these resources to Original Series-Era materials, as we have all clearly seen, the relevance of this fictional conflict has been virtually ignored by TNG-Era materials and beyond even into Enterprise. Also, any professionally published materials such as the The Rise of Khan Noonien Singh by Greg Cox would be considered an exhaustive treatise on this subject and should NOT be considered a reference for this discussion. I simply want more of a fandom (you and I) speculation on this subject. You may as be "long-winded" as you can possibly be or as exhaustive as you can get within a speculative timeline. My conditions are such that I am not overly concered with canonical issues. I simply want to the fan's interpretation of these events. Also, feel free to use my email provided here with any and all comments, arguments, orspeculations best covered outside of this forum. That being said, let the timelines begin!

May 4 ,1994 Shocked by the surrender of Australia and New Zealand the previous day France , Germany and Italy declare war on the Great Khanate. June 1 ,1994 President Bill Clinton reaffirms American neutrality in the widening war but declares that the United States will help supply the anti-Khanate alliance. June 22,1994 San Diego, California-USA,Tel Aviv,Israel and Seoul, South Korea are hit by nuclear weapons as the Great Khanate declares war on those 3 nations.Those 3 nations and several others (including Canada and Mexico) follow suit the next day. May 14-15,1995 The Battle of the Sea of Japan is fought.This battle is acknowledged as the turning point of the Eugenics Wars as the resulting allied victory fractures the Great Khanate into waring blocs of nations.The American aircraft carrrier U.S.S Enterprise-CVN 65 is destroyed in this battle. October 1 ,1996 The Eugenics Wars end as Khan and his cadre of eugenic supermen are presumed killed in the battle to liberate Sydney,Australia- where they had held out in a last stand.Chairman Minsei signed an unconditional surrender document in Beijing, China. September 27,1997 Chairman Minsei,General Hasan and 59 other surviving eugenic supermen are put on trial at the International Military Tribunal in Paris ,France.This is the 1st such trial since the 1945-1948 trials of German and Japansese WWII leaders.Minsei,Hasan and the rest were convicted and executed for crimes against humanity and peace the following year. Hmm...this seems like a good idea. I guess it is best to think of the Star Trek TL as an ATL going well into the future. Greg Cox's attempt to put it into our TL was a pretty good job, though, making it into a clandestine war.

Here's a map...I inluded the Sudan in the Khanate because frankly, I don't really see the point in taking over Somalia and Eritrea on their own. I also fail to see why such US-friendly eastern European states as Poland (alliance of the willing, remember?) would not join in on the democratic side once the US got in...I may do a modified "at the time of the invasion of Japan" map later on.

As to Eastern European absence in the DA-thats deliberate.My idea for the AH of the Star Trek universe is an axis that runs from WW2 to the Eugenics Wars to WW3.In this AH WW2 was longer in Europe weakening the Soviet Union and giving Nazi ideas about Eugenics more currency in Eastern Europe.I envision the main "Western" element of the cabal of scientists that created the supermen (Augments) in the 1950's and 1960's -still under Soviet domination but working for ideas established by the Nazis in WW2-actually developing a truly genetic superrace.Last edited by Michael E Johnson; November 20th, 2004 at 05:52 AM..

He begins mass genocide of native Turks, Assyrians, Armenians, Christians, and Zoroastrians in his country. May 6, 1992: Saddam Hussein's Iraq declares "total union" with Iran. Later historians would compare this with Anschluss, the union of Nazi Germany and Austria in 1936. September 7, 1992: When Minsei's China attacks Taiwan, it simultaneously annexes Hong Kong and Macao. January 15, 1994: The United Nations dissolves following the withdrawl of all Khanate nations and the assasination of the UN Secretary-General. June 23, 1994: United States detonates nuclear weapons in New Delhi, Beijing, and Riyadh in retaliation for the nuclear strike on San Diego. Well, more, victorious wartime presidents don't lose elections. It takes a year or so for the luster to wear off (if one can take the 1946 Congressional Races as a rebuking of Truman -- and he came back from that anyway -- and the 1992 defeat of Bush the Elder as examples). It's only presidents in the middle of a horrible muddle that are in danger, and even there the example is mixed: Truman bowed out in 1952 and Johnson in 1968 before they could be defeated, and Madison was reelected even though he was in the War of 1812. Well, there have to be some pre-1990s divergences from the real world to the Star Trek world, if nothing else to explain the military model of Saturn V launched from the McKinley Air Force Base. Back in "A Private Little War" there's a mention of bloody Asian land wars, although my memory fails me about whether they make it clearly the war of 1960s Vietnam or if it could be elsewhere on the continent. December 26, 1995: in a chilly Christmas battle, the Russian army defeats Minsei's forces at the battle of Ulaanbataar. February 10, 1996: D-Day for British/Japanese/Filipino/American/Brazillian forces in the liberation of Taiwan. July 29, 1996: Russian, American, Turkish, and Israeli forces meet to defeat Hassan's army in the battle of Tabriz. September 2, 1996: Taiwan liberated. plans are drawn up for an invasion of Mainland China from the sea and through Korea, to assist the southward-moving Russian army. This plan is never activated after all Khanate forces surrender. April 12, 2030: the daughter of Travis Mitchell, Cynthia Mitchell, marries Corinth Mayweather.  -DanielSBen1

Not sure that the USSR is weaker in the Star Trek (original series, anyway) TL: I'm pretty sure Chevok mentions Leningrad at least once, and his frequent absurd boasts about Russian achievements were meant as a humorous dig at Soviet propaganda. Besides, in the "Gary 7" episode, it appears the USSR is wealthy enough some time in 1968's "near future" to put orbiting nuclear battestations in orbit (although I suppose that could be interpreted as an act of desperation rather than confidence...see the explanation for the doomsday device in Dr. Strangelove)
Anyhoo, here's an updated "Eugenics wars" map with the Khanate at it's maximum expansion...

...although if WWII ended differently, the borders in Eastern/Central Europe should be different. Perhaps the borders in SE Asia, too if that business about wars in Asia is to be expanded on - and what was the default assumption for the future of the area in 1968? (surviving S. Vietnam? Unified Commie SE Asia?)

From what I get, this is the "story" of the Eugenics Wars as presented in the two books by Greg Cox along with canon info and some "best guesses" I've come up with...
EUGENICS WARS - ROEDECKER'S THEORY Unlike the world wars of the past, the Eugenics Wars were shadowy conflicts fought behind the scenes of current events, against elusive and conspiratorial enemies whose genetically engineered origins remained largely unknown to the general public. Although the existence of the Eugenics Wars was well known by the twenty-second century most citizens of the late twentieth century were not even aware of the global struggle against Khan and his fellow supermen, seeing only scattered brush fire wars and random acts of terrorism. Genetic engineering in the 1960s led to the Chrysalis Project, an ambitious eugenics program conducted by a group of scientists trying to create a new, artificially improved breed of men and women: smarter, faster, stronger than ordinary human beings, a super-race to take command of the entire planet. Designed and facilitated by a group of world renown geneticists, the top-secret Chrysalis Project involved manipulating chromosomes of human embryos using techinques that appeared to be far beyond what humans were capable of at the time. Essentially its goal was to improve the human race artificially by editing out "bad" influences in genetic structures and adding in "improvements" which would maximize the potential mental and physical development of the subject embryos, which would create a race of superhumans. The designers focused on increasing intelligence, strength, endurance, respiratory capacity and the cardiovascular system. The Chrysalis Project endeavored to give their genetically enhanced creations full rein of the planet. To do so, the engineers of this project also genetically enhanced the bacteria streptococcus, making it a volatile flesh eating entity. In order to infect the worlds populous, Russian ICBMs were procured as implementation vehicles. Free from any governments authority, Chrysalis was a private consortium that answered to no one, having complete autonomy. Chrysalis had its headquarters located in the Great Thar desert, thanks to its remote location, the Chrysalis endeavor was completely isolated. The main complex was hidden beneath the ruins of an ancient Rajput fort. The genetically engineered "Augments" of the Chrysalis Project were mentally and physically superior to ordinary men and women. They were five times stronger than the average person, their lung efficiency was 50 percent better than normal, and their intelligence was double that of normal humans. The problem was that as one of the Chrysalis scientist wrote before he was murdered by an Augment, "Superior ability creates superior ambition": the so called supermen felt that their superior physical and intellectual abilities gave them the right to rule over the rest of humanity. To that end, they conspired throughout the 1980s to seize power through the use of behind-the-scenes manipulation, brute force and "puppet leaders" who answered only to them. Of all the genetically enhanced manipulators who rose to power during this period, none were as ambitious or as ruthless as the man known as Khan Noonien Singh. The son of the original director of Chrysalis, Dr. Sarina Kaur, Khan Singh's presence was felt throughout the world, perhaps most discreetly. He fought against Soviet soldiers outside Lenin's tomb, where he stopped a coup, and maintained the safety of President Mikhail Gorbachev while he was attending the summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. He was rumored to be all over the Asian and Indian subcontinent, inciting the 1987 pro-democracy uprising in South Korea, fighting alongside the Afghan rebels in their guerilla war against the Soviet Union, personally arranging the 1988 plane crash that killed General Zia ul-Haq, leader of the Pakistan's military government, returning democracy to India's nearest neighbor and rival. Khan was also credited with the so called "natural" death of the Ayatollah Khomeini. Aided and abetted by power-hungry individuals in various governments, business organizations, and independent agencies who allowed themselves to fall under his domination, Khan attempted to gain control of the entire planet. In 1992 Khan quietly seized power over much of Southeast Asia and the Middle East through blackmail and strong-arm tactics. Dozens of "figurehead rulers" either answered to Khan or in some fashion allied themselves with him. He ruled his dominion from what he called the Great Khanate in the remote parts of India. His fellow "supermen" took over key positions of power in South America, Somalia, the former Yugoslavia, remote parts of the South Pacific and in sections of North Africa. Khan's Great Khanate was centered in Chandigarh, India and had a secondary command center on Muroroa atoll, "Chrysalis Island", of the Tuamoto islands in the French Polynesia. On June 14, 1992 from Muroroa atoll, a former French Nuclear testing area (Centre d'Experimentation du Pacifique), Khan launched the Morning Star satellite into orbit, giving him the ability to damage the Earth's ozone layer. On July 10, 1992 Singh held an assembly with delegates from nations in Southern Asia and the Middle East, where he demonstrated Morning Star's abilities and issued an ultimatum, "if I fall, the world falls with me". The satellite would later cause an increase in the hole in the ozone layer that was publicly blamed on the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. Various incidents of violence around the world were spurred by Khan and his fellow Augments throughout 1992, such as civil wars in Liberia, Peru, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Somalia, Sudan and elsewhere; race riots in Los Angeles and food riots in Albania. On June 14, 1993 Khan held a summit with 6 of his most powerful Chrysalis siblings, where he attempted to unify them to create a new world order with him as the prevailing voice. The summit was a failure as Khan’s dream of unity collapsed when the Augments' enhanced ambition caused them to turn on one another, spawing what would later be called the "Eugenics Wars." Carried out through mostly covert operations, the war did result in massive casualities that the legitimate Earth governments publicly said were rogue terrorist incidents or natural disasters. During this time, in their eagerness to assert their self-proclaimed destinies as rulers of the Earth, the Augments sparked civil wars and unrest all over the globe, in Eastern Europe, Liberia, Somalia, Peru, Haiti, Rwanda and elsewhere. Though the public-at-large was aware of the majority of such events - most never knew that the events were in fact all related to one another. Indeed, the public was kept entirely ignorant of many of the related "battles" of the so-called Eugenics Wars and even Khan himself was not known to the majority of the planet's inhabitants. One notably incident of the war occured on September 30, 1993, when Khan was lured to the Ajorra caves in central India by Vasily Hunyadi, the Augment force behind the Serbian government, who attempted to assassinate Khan by triggering an earthquake caused by an underwater concussive charge place by Hunyadi. This earthquake was in the previously-considered aseismatic region of Maharashtra. The death toll from this quake was over 10,000 and entire villages were destroyed. Khan attempted to retaliate on February 7 of 1994 during a submarine battle under the Meditteranean Sea between Khan forces and Hunyadi's. However, his effort was thwarted when the ballistic missile submarine S.G.K. Kaur was attacked because of the no-fly zone imposed by NATO. A couple of months later, on April 21 Dr. Donald Williams of the Chrysalis Project gave to Khan the genetic sequence for the flesh eating strain of streptococcus-A developed by Sarina Kaur. Khan would begin human testing of this carnivorous bacteria on October 2 of that year. On August 29, 1994 Hunyadi addressed the United Nations in defiance against the economic sanctions and the NATO peacekeeping presence to declare that Serbia had nothing to apologize for. During his speech, members of the Army of Eternal Vigilance (AEV) released sarin gas, a nerve toxin, into the council chambers, suffocating to death many ambassadors and tourists and also Vasily Hunyadi. The AEV was an antigovernment militia based in Cochise, Arizona. It was commanded by an Augment named Hawkeye Morrison. Morrison had teamed up with Khan to eliminate Hunyadi. Morrison's ambition with nerve gas was notorious, the AEV attempted to release Sarin gas at both ends of the Eurotunnel at its opening to the public. When this strike was stopped paranoia consumed Morrison. He attempted to kill all his followers but they escaped and Morrison committed suicide. On March 17 of 1995 Khan acquired over 200 bio-warheads from the former Soviet Union. Eventually, after learning the secrets of the Chrysalis Project, Khan redeveloped the flesh eating streptococcus that his mother developed and prepared to devastate the planet with its presence. On September 5, 1995 Chrysalis Island was attacked by a joint Russian-American strike, a ten-kiloton nuclear device destroying Khan's biological warfare lab and his doomsday weapon. The cover story was that France had privately resumed nuclear testing in the area of the old Centre d'Experimentation du Pacifique. With his weakened arsenal and with the major superpowers of the world now aware of Khan's plans of genocide, air strikes from American B-52 bombers and a ground assualt from the Russian Spetsnaz eliminated Khan's henchmen and palace. On January 10, 1996 U.S. forces bombed Khan's "terrorist base" in Chandigarh as well as several other Augment bases in Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Sudan. Facing certain defeat at the hands of combined forces from multiple nations, the very next day Khan and 83 of his Augment followers secretly escaped Earth aboard a stolen protoype vessel of the DY-100 sleeper ship christened the "S.S. Botany Bay". This ship was developed using technology reverse-engineered from the Ferengi ship that crashed at Roswell, and launched from the secret American facility nicknamed "Area 51." The sleeper ship was set to go to an uninhabited solar system about one hundred light-years from Earth. Khan headed for outer space with the dream of someday ruling a world of his own making. On board the ship, the crew were cryogenically frozen to allow them to remain in suspended animation. All remaining Augments were either killed or imprisoned and all the existing Augment embryos were placed in cryogenic suspension and quarantined. In the 22nd century, these embryos were placed in a secret space station run by the Interspecies Medical Exchange known as Cold Station 12. Because of the Eugenics Wars, Earth would eventually outlaw genetic engineering except for cases of repairing serious birth defects. Despite this, certain groups would pass on the forbidden knowledge of genetic enhancement and it would remain available via the black-market.

I don't think Clinton becomes President in the Eugenics War timeline, especially if the crisis begins in 1992, the election year in which in our time line he did become President. The crisis would have become the number one issue (replacing the economy, etc) of the election and such things always advantage Republicans.

I always felt that Star Trek, at least the original series, had an identical timeline up to the point the series was produced (I am sure that in one episode there is a reference to WW2 ending in 1945-perhaps the one involving the time portal?).
In my own little mind I always saw the world carrying on much as it happened in OTL in the ST timeline, with a few modifications (extra development of spacecraft and eugenics) up to 1992 when Khan and Co seize control. The USSR is gone, the idea of the new world order is there (everyone getting on) and the first Gulf War happens. I always thought the Eugenics were said to have seized nations in Europe-I wondered if Eire would be a good target for them; limited military but great strategic location allowing them to interfer with links between America and Europe, and would tie us Brits up from doing too much elsewhere until we could force them out. In another episode, one where an alien kidnaps Spock and Kirk to fight in a battle between 'good' and 'evil', we meet a Colonel Green (?) who is said to have taken control of some part of America-possibly the west coast of (I assumed) the USA? Ok, a bit vague but was he an Eugenic or is he WW3? I am pretty sure that WW3 and the Eugenics War are supposed to be seperate. Can anyone clarify this.
