Explain It!
OK, take a stab at this one. How did we end up with a North America like this?

I would suspect the Republic of America is some sort of sucessor state - or perhaps still within - a protestant Cromwellian Republican British Empire or Commonwealth. It wouldn't be French because most all the city names are British. "New Orleans" and "Montreal" implies the Franch had a north american Empire that they lost. Given the bad blood between Catholics and Freemasons, this might explain the Masonic imagry on the American flag. Also the "Kingdom of Mexico" implies there was NOT a revolutionary republic in north america akin to the one which established the USA - otherwise it would have affected the latin american independence movements to be republican in design and rhetoric. Everybody else in Europe still seems to be royalist (although we don't know for sure about Sweden or France) so nothing approximating the French Revolution and/or the 1848-1918 revolutions apparently happened. Sweden must include all Scandinavia and is also a much bigger and more important empire than in OTL. Given the fact that France only owns a few islands in North America, they must have lost a war or two against England, Spain or Sweden.

Very good, Zoomar. Damn, I thought it'd be harder to figure out.
The Republic of America is part of the Commonwealth of Godly Nations - a reorganized and quite scary coalition of former British colonies and all the territory they've managed to subjugate since the CGN was founded around 1750 after overthrowing Charles III and his Protestant Inquisition. The CGN has been in a cold war of sorts with the Habsburg-Pope led (6 of 'em and counting) European alliance of Austria, France, Spain, and Papal Italy, but the CGN's repressive fundamentalism has led to its slow decay over the last century. It's only a matter of a few years at most until the whole structure falls apart. |

I am a little concerned about the KINGDOM of Mexico. The reason that Iturbide and later Maximillian took the imperial title is that Mexico at the time of the Aztecs was seen to have had an emperor. It would seem odd for someone to have created a kingdom upon independence when an empire would be more natural.

In this TL, Spain did marginally better with her colonial empire, at least well enough not to completely decimate her economy. Spain was forced to recognize Mexican independence after the Protestant Revolution, since the new government in New York didn't want a large Papist colony right next door. It was either an independent Mexico, or a long and bloody war between Spain and the new Protestant governments. Spain did manage to maintain a large presence in Mexico however (think 'military advisors'), as well as several other concessions. Mexico IS an Empire, for all intents and purposes, but is called a kingdom mainly to show a pecking order with the huge Habsburg Austrian Empire and the considerable power of France. In fact, Mexico's Queen Consuela is married to a Habsburg son, and this is a continual source of tension between the Protestant and Catholic power blocs in Europe and America. |
