Splotchy? Hmm... well, when I first saw the map, it didn't seem so, but now that I am looking closely, I can see why you'd say that. It's not too bad, though.

Yes it does

That last version has been reworked a bit, I thought it was alright at first, but once I noticed the aforementioned splotchiness, I couldn't not see it.

So with some input from the fiance on what possibly to do, I got some new brushes and fiddled around again. Mk.2:

I'm noticing my self that there are a few areas in need of addressing, as well as the merging of the layers together (while still being seperate, handy that). But looking at the open grassland areas, a better version?

That's absolutely splendid.

However, the mountains don't blend too well with the rest.

Amazing work, Azardin.

As with my earlier comment, I have decided to honour your contributions to AH.com by renaming the 'Eurasian' arrangement on Vároton after you

Ah, if only I had the talent to make maps of a quality just a tenth of that!
I can't make a realistic looking coastline in Paint if so my life depended on it.

Yeah, I know the mountains don't blend well. I did them some time last year, when I was using a different coloring method. I'm considering redoing them entirely, or perhaps utilizing the fiance to help. Quite handy having an Art major on hand.

Its surprisingly easy to do. I find the best way to do it in paint is to outline your continent at a normal zoom, and then zoom in close to the shoreline and just let the cursor pretty much wander.

Y'know, I have a feeling that most SF authors come up with alien names by banging on their keyboards, and this enhances that theory a bit.

Fantasy writers, too.
Me, I just think 'fantasy name', and one pops up, ready to use.
It's a talent of mine (of which I have few).

All this talk of making planets and creating langauges kinda set off a little spark, but I dunno if the planet I tinkered with is feasible or not for life. Azardin, you got this stuff down. If I may, is a planet like the one below balanced enough for life to develop? Is it more likely to be heavily forested or relatively barren?

I'll have you know I have a whole phonics system worked out for the Vároto language...

A certain emphasis on sz, cz, tz and pf consonantal sounds, as you can see.

If one were to come up with names by banging on keyboards, it'd be more like Xkdfg=-sdfmndasmndfjs,akn.

No offence intended, there just seem to be lots o' consanant clusters.

If you actually have a bit of their language thought up, then it probably makes sense.

EDIT:Now that I think about it, Xkdfg=-sdfmndasmndfjs,akn actualy sounds like some alien names from SF universes.

...actually, ironically your name sounds like that of the Ucasa race who live on the Ucasphorm subcontinent on that map...their names are all vowel sounds...

And in another freakish coincidence, I wrote all that long before you joined the board.

I think it would be a relatively mild world. You've large areas at the 30 degree lattitudes that are land and protected by mountains, which suggest deserts. At the same time, you've areas that should be bloody wet tropical rainforests. I'd say the climate would be like Earth, with a pretty much a desert on every continent, though the sizes vary from landmass to landmass.

I would say that the dominant 'climate' would be grassland, though I think it might vary from dry to temperate and to wet, etc.

Now that I think about it, it reminds me (climatewise) of the Tau homeworld from Warhammer 40K (or at least how I always imagined it, a grassy/savannah world)

If your fingers are this prescient, we might need to confiscate them and put them to work in predicting the future

Did some more work on spreading the good ol' Aiche-Two-Oh around, as well as a preliminary attempt at freezing the poles (as they should be). Haven't done much with the mountains yet, but it is late...and I wanted to play Civ4 before bed.

And so I give you, the world.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the fascinating discussions on climatology; I admit that I never detailed the climate much on my own planet, but I might just change that after having read these posts (http://www.planetfuraha.org).

I used some of the software I wrote for my own use on one of the maps in earlier posts, one of Thande's. This one was done with the cartography toolbox of Matlab. Hope you like it. One thing I found out the hard way is that it rather tricky to draw the polar areas well with any paint program, as they tend to get all wrinkled up around the poles.

If you want better-looking globes you can easily import maps into Vue d'Esprit, and you can also use the Celestia program. The latter (search Google for Celestia and Celestia Motherlode) may be worth a visit anyway.

Here's one with Vue Infinite.

Obviously, it's a bit more convincing with realistic colours and clouds. And perhaps no lettering...
